href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indigenous_Peoples%27_Day\">Indigenous Peoples&#8217; Day<\/a> \u2014\u00a0I&#8217;ve moved since I first posted this <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2018\/10\/09\/my-local-indigenous-history\/\">in 2018<\/a>, but not far enough for any of this to change.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/native-land.ca\">this map<\/a>, I (along with many of my Seattle-area friends) live on <a href=\"(https:\/\/www.duwamishtribe.org)\">Duwamish<\/a> tribal land, part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/coastsalishmap.org\/start_page.htm\">Puget Sound Coast Salish<\/a> tribal group (is that the right term to use?). The closest village was \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/coastsalishmap.org\/Village_Descriptions_Duwamish-Seattle.htm#39\">sawh-WAHWH-weh-wad<\/a> (\u2018place of whistling\u2019). Duwamish. On Cedar River about 2 miles above present-day town of Renton. This village was occupied by the riverine Duwamish or doo-AHBSH, after doo (\u2018inside\u2019) referring to (present-day) Duwamish River, Black River and Cedar River, along all of which this group resided.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tulaliplushootseed.com\">Lushootseed<\/a> (which has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.puyalluptriballanguage.org\/about\/\">several dialects<\/a>) was the language spoken in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The land was part of <a href=\"https:\/\/native-land.ca\/maps\/treaties\/cession-347\/\">Cession 347<\/a>, taken by the United States in the <a href=\"https:\/\/native-land.ca\/maps\/treaties\/point-elliott-treaty\/\">Point Elliott Treaty<\/a> in 1855, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/diversity\/files\/2013\/03\/treaty-point-elliott.pdf\">ratified and proclaimed in 1859<\/a> (19KB .pdf). The signatory for the Duwamish was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.duwamishtribe.org\/chief-siahl\">Chief Si&#8217;ahl<\/a>, namesake of the city of Seattle. For all the land taken by this treaty, the tribes were &#8220;paid&#8221; $150k (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.davemanuel.com\/inflation-calculator.php?theyear=1859&amp;amountmoney=150000\">roughly $4.3 million<\/a> in today&#8217;s dollars \u2014\u00a0or roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/2018\/04\/30\/this-is-how-much-avengers-infinity-war-cost-to-make\">1.3% of the cost of <em>Avengers: Infinity War<\/em><\/a>), distributed over nineteen years not as direct funds, but &#8220;to be applied to the use and benefit\u201d of the tribes as directed by the government.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being the first signatory tribe of the Point Elliott Treaty and having cultural history and stories dating back to the last ice age, the Duwamish Tribe is <a href=\"https:\/\/newsmaven.io\/indiancountrytoday\/archive\/10-things-you-should-know-about-the-duwamish-tribe-4pCfBkJ7hUKWE2kMvsPQIQ\/\">still not recognized as an indigenous nation<\/a> by the United States Government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I live on Duwamish tribal land, part of the Puget Sound Coast Salish tribal group.
