ago today<\/a>, I became a blogger.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, the date could be argued a bit, as I&#8217;d had my own website <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelhans.com\/19960227\/woody.html\">since 1996<\/a>, and even back then had been in the habit of making <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelhans.com\/19960227\/announce.html\">short, dated updates<\/a> that were usually site-related, but sometimes just personal ramblings. And I didn&#8217;t come across the term &#8216;blog&#8217; until <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2001\/02\/08\/of-blogs-site-content-and-something-funny\/\">a few months later<\/a> in February of 2001.<\/p>\n<p>But on November 25, 2000, I moved from hand-coding updates into a static HTML page to using a script called NewsPro to manage and automate posting updates. So that&#8217;s what I&#8217;ve been using as my &#8220;official&#8221; blogging start date.<\/p>\n<p>In the past 20 years, my posting frequency has waxed and waned (waning more often than waxing, admittedly) but has never disappeared altogether. I&#8217;ve moved platforms from self-hosted (first NewsPro, then <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2001\/12\/21\/new-blog-software-movabletype\/\">MovableType<\/a>) to hosted (<a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2003\/07\/07\/typepad-beta-testing\/\">TypePad<\/a>) back to self-hosted (<a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2006\/11\/16\/back-already\/\">WordPress<\/a>). Sometimes self-hosted meant on a server in my apartment; these days I use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\">DreamHost<\/a> as my hosting provider, but I still use a manual installation of <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\">WordPress<\/a> rather than using the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.com\">WordPress.com<\/a> hosted service. I don&#8217;t tinker as much as I used to, but it&#8217;s still nice to get into the nuts and bolts from time to time.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time I&#8217;ve been doing this, I&#8217;ve just been another one of the many random voices on the &#8216;net, never one of the Big Names. The closest I ever came to breaking out of that&#8230;well, <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2003\/10\/29\/fifteen-minutes-of-fame\/\">you can look back if you want<\/a>, but I&#8217;m just glad that it&#8217;s in my past. Maybe I&#8217;ll have more to say in another three years on <em>that<\/em> twentieth anniversary, maybe not. Generally, I&#8217;m fine with just tossing my occasional thoughts on <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/category\/geekery\/tech\/apple\/\">Apple<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/category\/geekery\/tv-and-films\/star-trek\/\">Star Trek<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/category\/politics\/\">politics<\/a>, and whatever else pops into my mind into the electronic void to see if anyone picks up on it.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve been stopping by and checking out my ramblings from time to time over the years \u2014\u00a0thanks!
