I&#8217;ve got forty-eight states I can get to within a few days without <em>ever<\/em> having to set foot on an airplane (49, if I make the time to drive the Al-Can).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve mentioned before that I seem to have developed something of a <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2004\/02\/safety_comfort.html\" title=\"Eclecticism: Safety != Comfort\">fear of flying<\/a> ever since a <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2001\/12\/back_in_anchora.html\" title=\"Eclecticism: Back in Anchorage\">particularly turbulent<\/a> flight into Anchorage a few years back. It&#8217;s not entirely rational, but then, rationality doesn&#8217;t really seem to enter into it when I&#8217;m trapped in a multi-ton metal tube a few thousand feet in the air that&#8217;s shaking me around like one of James Bond&#8217;s martinis.<\/p>\n<p>So then, what do I in my infinite wisdom do? I go and read articles about <a href=\"http:\/\/slate.msn.com\/id\/2116630\/fr\/rss\/\" title=\"Slate: Can we get sucked out of airplanes? How explosive decompression works.\">what happens during explosive decompression<\/a> (&#8220;ROOF FLIES OFF!&#8221;).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  A blown-out door can be perilous for pressurized aircraft at high altitudes. In 1989, the lower cargo door on a United Airlines passenger jet <a href=\"http:\/\/dnausers.d-n-a.net\/dnetGOjg\/240289.htm\" title=\"Report No. NTSB-AAR-90-01\">became unlatched<\/a> at about 23,000 feet. The sudden and explosive loss of pressure tore open a portion of the cabin\u2014nine passengers were sucked out through the large hole, along with their seats and the floor around them.<\/p>\n<p>  <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/graphics\/2005\/04\/graphics\/side1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/graphics\/2005\/04\/graphics\/side1-tm.jpg\" height=\"95\" width=\"150\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" vspace=\"0\" alt=\"Aloha Airlines Flight 243\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>The year before, a Boeing 737 operated by Aloha Airlines experienced an &#8220;explosive decompression&#8221; at 24,000 feet.
