Some of the areas I got marked down on aren&#8217;t a surprise at all (W3C validation, for instance, is <a href=\"http:\/\/validator.w3.org\/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fmichaelhans.com%2Feclecticism#result\" title=\"W3C Markup Validator\">failing miserably<\/a> right now, something I need to pay attention to rather soon), but I did get a laugh out of the one section that I was rated as &#8216;Very Poor&#8217;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  <strong>Amount of text<\/strong> A page was found to contain a very large amount of text. Users very rarely choose to read large, continous blocks of text, and these pages require time to download and scroll through for relevant content. <em>Recommendations:<\/em> Break larger pages up into several smaller pages, and consider restructuring content to make navigating it easier.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yeah&#8230;I get it. I talk a lot. This isn&#8217;t exactly news, especially if you&#8217;ve been following my site for any length of time. Good for a laugh, though.<\/p>\n<p>Now to take a look at those validation errors and see if I can&#8217;t bump my score up above a 7.8&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>(via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paulbeard.org\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2005\/12\/26\/for-what-this-is-worth\/\" title=\"A Crank's Progress: for what this is worth\">A Crank&#8217;s Progress<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><ins>Update:<\/ins> With some work tweaking templates and a mix of simple fixes (some missing <code>&lt;\/div&gt;<\/code> tags) and not-quite-so-simple fixes (tracking down all the unescaped ampersands), I&#8217;ve managed to push my way up to an 8.3 rating. While I still rate a <strong>Very Poor<\/strong> for <em>Amount of text<\/em>, I&#8217;m now <strong>Good<\/strong> on <em>Size of pages<\/em>, <em>Features<\/em>, and <em>Speed<\/em>, and <strong>Excellent<\/strong> on <em>Popularity ranking<\/em>, <em>Popularity on Google<\/em>, <em>British legal requirements<\/em>, <em>Use of fonts<\/em>, <em>Use of forms<\/em>, <em>Use of Flash<\/em>, <em>Use of frames<\/em>, <em>Table-based layout<\/em>, <em>Use of headings<\/em>, <em>Use of style-sheets<\/em>, <em>Use of Interactive Elements<\/em>, <em>No of links<\/em>, <em>No of images<\/em>, <em>Links to<\/em>, <em>Use of page titles<\/em>, <em>Refresh redirects<\/em>, <em>Basic HTML design<\/em>, <em>Use of advertising keywords<\/em>, and <em>Use of audio<\/em>.
