I had the user ID of &#8216;ASMDH&#8217; &#8212; Anchorage, Student, Michael David Hanscom &#8212; and the sole remaining evidence of that first &#8216;net address is a <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2005\/12\/registered.html#comment-26117\" title=\"Royce: Cool!\">comment by Royce<\/a> from a few days ago, and a listing in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alaska.net\/~royce\/Funny\/IRN\/irn-faq.html\" title=\"The I R N F A Q\">IRN FAQ<\/a>, also courtesy of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alaska.net\/~royce\/\" title=\"Royce Williams' Home Page\">Royce<\/a>. Digging through the IRN archives gives me an earliest confirmable &#8216;net presence of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alaska.net\/~royce\/Funny\/IRN\/IRN1_5.TXT\" title=\"IRN1_5.TXT\">Thursday, the 17th of October, 1991 at 12:18:11<\/a> (entry #5 in IRN 1.5).<\/p>\n<p>As I discovered <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2001\/12\/its_astounding.html\" title=\"Eclecticism: It's astounding, time is fleeting...\">about four years ago<\/a>, the first definite evidence of my existence as a denizen of the &#8216;net outside of UAA comes from a Usenet post archived by Google Groups that dates to <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.google.com\/group\/rec.music.industrial\/msg\/45dfdff7c47291b?q=author:Woody+author:Hanscom&amp;start=40&amp;hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;rnum=50\" title=\"Google Groups: rec.music.industrial: NIN: live disc?\">February 9th, 1994 at 5:49am<\/a>. Heh. Sounds like me, alright. By then I had an account through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alaska.net\/\" title=\"Alaska.net (now redirecting to ACS Alaska)\">Alaska.net<\/a>, but there&#8217;s no web presence listed in my signature &#8212; which makes sense, as the web was still a brand new thing in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>My first web page went up sometime in 1995, though I don&#8217;t know exactly when. The earliest archive I have dates back to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelhanscom.com\/19960227\/woody.html\" title=\"Woody's World of Wonders\">February 27, 1996<\/a>, but I&#8217;d been working with the space and teaching myself HTML for some time at that point. With a little poking around, however, you might stumble across the &#8220;these pages last updated&#8221; link at the bottom of that page. And what do you think you&#8217;ll find if you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelhanscom.com\/19960227\/announce.html\" title=\"Announcements, announcements, announcements...\">follow that link<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Time- and date-stamped entries in reverse chronological order (the most recent at the top) detailing little updates I&#8217;d made to the website and some personal bits here and there.<\/p>\n<p>Sound familiar?<\/p>\n<p>Going by the earliest entry on that page, I&#8217;ve been blogging in one form or another for <em>ten years<\/em> as of 3:13am (Alaska time), December 29, 2005.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a long time. Honestly, I probably wouldn&#8217;t even have noticed this if I hadn&#8217;t decided to put all those early, hand-coded entries into my current Movable Type installation a while ago. It was kind of fun to see my <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/archives.shtml\" title=\"Eclecticism: Archives\">archives page<\/a> list posts all the way back to that <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/1995\/12\/from_the_archiv.html\" title=\"Eclecticism: From the archives: 12.29.95 0313\">earliest archived post<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>I just wish I hadn&#8217;t lost a lot of pages from back when I was hand-coding my site. While my archives jump from early 1996 up to 2001, I was keeping a blog-like website during all that time&#8230;I was just hand-coding everything, and when the page got too long, I&#8217;d delete the oldest entries at the bottom.
