News: Crews search for more victims of Minnesota bridge collapse\">news stories<\/a> about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/2007\/0803\/p01s05-usgn.htm\" title=\"Christian Science Monitor: Bridge collapse spotlights America's deferred maintenance\">Minneapolis bridge collapse<\/a> have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statesboroherald.com\/news\/article\/4907\/\" title=\"Statesboro Herald: Bridge collapse in Minnesota kills 4; crews search for more victims in water\">highlighted the fact<\/a> that the bridge received a ranking of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/nation\/2007-08-02-minneapolis-bridge_N.htm\" title=\"USA Today: Minn. bridge warning issued in 1990\">just 50 percent on a federal scale of 1 to 100<\/a>, making it \u201cstructurally deficient\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/slog.thestranger.com\/files\/2007\/08\/alaskanwayviaduct.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" alt=\"Alaskan Way Viaduct\" \/><\/p>\n<p>  The central portion of the Alaskan Way Viaduct was ranked on the same scale. Its score: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nationalbridges.com\/nbi_record.php?StateCode=53&amp;struct=0003935A0000000\" title=\"National Bridge Inventory: SR99\">Nine percent<\/a><\/strong>. And if that doesn\u2019t make you want to stay away from the viaduct until they <strong>tear the damn thing down<\/strong>, perhaps knowing that the <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalbridges.com\/\" title=\"National Bridge Inventory\">National Bridge Inventory<\/a> (which provided the Minnesota number) considers it \u201c<strong>basically intolerable<\/strong> requiring high priority of corrective action,\u201d will. (Fun bonus fact: The 520 bridge across Lake Washington received a rating of 44.8 percent, just meeting the \u201cminimum tolerable limit to be left in place as is.\u201d)\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Gah. Freaky. I didn&#8217;t like the viaduct <em>before<\/em> all this stuff. I&#8217;m even less fond of it now. Just tear the fool thing down (and don&#8217;t rebuild it, and don&#8217;t dig some stupid tunnel&#8230;as long as we&#8217;re going to have to move to surface streets eventually no matter <em>what<\/em> happens to the viaduct, we might as well just stick with that option and do it right).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The central portion of the Alaskan Way Viaduct was ranked on the same scale.
