Consider this my version of &#8216;required reading.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Things to remember while e-mailing:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Big companies don&#8217;t do business <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/inboxer\/nothing\/billgate.htm\" title=\"Urban Legends Reference Pages: Thousand Dollar Bill\">via chain letters<\/a>. Bill Gates is not giving you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/inboxer\/nothing\/billgate.htm#billgate\" title=\"ULRP: TDB: Cash from Microsoft\">$1000<\/a>, and Disney is not giving you a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/inboxer\/nothing\/billgate.htm#disney\" title=\"ULRP: TDB: Free trip for two to Walt Disney World or $5000 cash from Disney\">free vacation<\/a>. There is no baby food company issuing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/inboxer\/hoaxes\/babyform.htm\" title=\"ULRP: Baby Formula Hoax\">class-action checks<\/a>. Proctor and Gamble is not part of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/business\/alliance\/procter.htm\" title=\"ULRP: Trademark of the Devil\">satanic cult or scheme<\/a>, and its logo is not satanic.<br \/>\nMTV will not give you backstage passes if you forward something to the most people. The Gap is not giving away <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/inboxer\/nothing\/billgate.htm#gap\" title=\"ULRP: TDB: Free clothing from the Gap\">free clothes<\/a>. You can relax, there is no need to pass it on &#8220;just in case it&#8217;s true.&#8221; There is no such thing as &#8216;tracking software&#8217; that can tell how many people you sent something to.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>There is no kidney theft ring in New Orleans. No one is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/horrors\/robbery\/kidney.htm\" title=\"ULRP: You've got to be kidneying\">waking up in a bathtub full of ice<\/a>, even if a friend of a friend swears it happened to their cousin. If you are hell-bent on believing the kidney-theft-ring stories, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanlegends.com\/medical\/organ.theft\/new_orleans_debunk.html\" title=\"Medical\/Organ Theft\/New Orleans debunk\">this page<\/a>. I quote:<\/p>\n<p>&gt; The National Kidney Foundation has repeatedly issued requests for actual victims of organ thieves to come forward and tell their stories.<\/p>\n<p>None have. That&#8217;s &#8216;none&#8217; as in &#8216;zero.&#8217; Not even your friend&#8217;s cousin.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Neiman Marcus doesn&#8217;t really sell a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/business\/consumer\/cookie.htm\" title=\"(Costs a) Fortune Cookie\">$200 cookie recipe<\/a>. And even if they do, we all have it. Then, if you make the recipe and decide that the cookies are that awesome, feel free to pass the recipe on.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>If the latest NASA rocket disaster(s) <em>did<\/em> contain plutonium that went to particulate over the eastern seaboard, do you <em>really<\/em> think that this information would reach the public via an AOL chain letter?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>There is no <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hr.doe.gov\/goodtime.html\" title=\"Good Times Virus Hoax FAQ\">&#8220;Good Times&#8221; virus<\/a>. In fact, you should never, ever, ever forward any email containing any virus warning unless you first confirm it with an actual site of an actual company that actually deals with viruses. Try <a href=\"http:\/\/www.norton.com\" title=\"Norton\">Norton<\/a>. And even then, don&#8217;t forward it. We don&#8217;t care. And you cannot get a virus from a flashing IM or email, you have to download it&#8230;you know, like, <em>a file<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>(Sadly, this last sentence has become false in the past few years, as vulnerabilities in IM programs and some e-mail clients [usually Microsoft Outlook] have introduced new problems. However, in the majority of circumstances, this is still correct.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>There is no gang initiation plot to murder any motorist who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/horrors\/madmen\/lightout.htm\" title=\"ULRP: Lights out!\">flashes their headlights<\/a> at another car driving at night without lights.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>If you&#8217;re using Outlook, <acronym title=\"Internet Explorer\">IE<\/acronym>, or Netscape to write e-mail, <em>turn off<\/em> the &#8216;<acronym title=\"HyperText Markup Language\">HTML<\/acronym> encoding.&#8217; Those of us on UNIX shells can&#8217;t read it, and don&#8217;t care enough to save the attachment and then view it with a browser since you&#8217;re probably forwarding us another copy of the Neiman Marcus Cookie Recipe anyway.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>If you still absolutely <em>must<\/em> forward that 10<sup>th<\/sup>-generation message from a friend, at least have the decency to trim the eight miles of headers showing everyone else who&#8217;s received it over the last 6 months. It sure wouldn&#8217;t hurt to get rid of all the &#8220;&gt;&#8221; that begin each line either. It is distracting them from the important work they do.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>If you are one of those insufferable idots who forwards anything that &#8216;promises&#8217; something bad will happen if you &#8216;don&#8217;t&#8217; &#8212; then something bad <em>will<\/em> happen to you if I ever meet you in a dark alley.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Women really are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/inboxer\/petition\/afghani.htm\" title=\"ULRP: Afghani get your gun\">suffering in Afghanistan<\/a>, but forwarding an email won&#8217;t help their cause in the least. If you want to help, contact your local legislative representative, or get in touch with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/\" title=\"Amnesty International - working to protect human rights worldwide\">Amnesty International<\/a> or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/\" title=\"American Red Cross\">Red Cross<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>As a general rule, e-mail signatures are easily faked and mean nothing to anyone with any power to do anything about whatever the competition is complaining about.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>KFC <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/horrors\/food\/kfc.htm\" title=\"ULRP: Tastes like chicken\">really does use real chickens<\/a> with feathers and beaks and feet. No, they really do. Why did they change their name? In this health conscious world, what was KFC&#8217;s name? Kentucky <em>Fried<\/em> Chicken. &#8216;Fried&#8217; is not healthy. So with the help of a focus group, they changed the name to KFC. It&#8217;s short, doesn&#8217;t offend dieters and it&#8217;s easy to remember.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Another thing, just because someone said in a message, four generations back, that &#8220;we checked it out and it&#8217;s legit,&#8221; does not actually make it true.<\/p>\n<p>PS: There is no bill pending before Congress that will allow long distance companies to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/inboxer\/pending\/internet.htm\" title=\"ULRP: A long pay from home\">charge you for using the Internet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>No women have ever died after having <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/sex\/juvenile\/lobster.htm\" title=\"ULRP: Lobster love\">kinky sex with a lobster<\/a>, or been caught with a crotch full of peanut butter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/sex\/bestial\/peanutbt.htm\" title=\"ULRP: The lap dog\">calling their dog<\/a> at a surprise party. I know someone you used to work with swears he was there, but come on&#8230;.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>There never was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/horrors\/freakish\/scuba.htm\" title=\"ULRP: Corpus Crispy\">charred scuba diver<\/a> found in a forest fire, Neil Armstrong never said &#8220;Good luck <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/quotes\/mrgorsky.htm\" title=\"ULRP: Good luck, Mr. Gorsky!\">Mr. Gorsky<\/a>&#8220;, no one has ever sent the Smithsonian a Barbie claiming it to be an &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/humor\/letters\/smithson.htm\" title=\"ULRP: Smithsonian Barbie\">archeological find<\/a>&#8216;, and no one has ever <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/autos\/dream\/jato.htm\" title=\"ULRP: Carmageddon\">crashed a jet powered car<\/a> or an old car with a stolen jet engine strapped to it to the side of a cliff (except maybe Wiley E. Coyote).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>There are no <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/horrors\/food\/tacobell.htm\" title=\"ULRP: La Cucaracha\">cockroach eggs<\/a> in Taco Bell&#8217;s food or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/toxins\/raturine.htm\" title=\"ULRP: Rat urine\">rat urine<\/a> in the tops of Coke cans, and no one has ever gotten AIDS from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/horrors\/parental\/archer.htm\" title=\"ULRP: Needlepointless tragedy\">needle in a ball pit<\/a> at McDonalds or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/horrors\/mayhem\/payphone.htm\" title=\"ULRP: Slots of fun\">coin slot of a pay phone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Bottom line &#8212; composing email or posting something on the &#8216;net is as easy as writing on the walls of a public restroom. Don&#8217;t automatically believe it until it&#8217;s proven false, rather, <em>assume it&#8217;s false<\/em> unless there is proof that it&#8217;s true.
