So on Monday, we tried again at our local Safeway, which had no problems at all with giving us a Flu\/Covid vaccine cocktail, so we&#8217;ve now switched pharmacies from Walgreens to Safeway.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Work was pretty uneventful, though this was the last week of the summer break; this coming week is our &#8220;opening week&#8221; with lots of staff and faculty welcomes and training workshops, and the week after that, students are back on campus. The elephant is the newest addition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display:block; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_4928.jpeg\" alt=\"A flock of about 40 ducks standing across a bike path.\" title=\"IMG_4928.jpeg\" border=\"0\" width=\"750\" height=\"277\" \/><figcaption>The ducks on our weekend walking trail were out in force on Saturday morning.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>&#x1f4dd; Writing<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>I had some thoughts on <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2025\/09\/11\/two-thoughts-on-charlie-kirk-and-gavin-newsom\/\">the latest high-profile assassination<\/a> and some of the reactions to it.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>And I looked back on <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2025\/09\/12\/star-trek-strange-new-worlds-season-three-wrapup\/\">season three of <cite>Star Trek: Strange New Worlds<\/cite><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>&#x1f4da; Reading<\/h2>\n<p>I finished two books this week; one was even non-fiction! Though as it was a behind-the-scenes look at <cite>Star Trek III<\/cite>, it was still solidly within my usual wheelhouse.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2025\/09\/08\/star-trek-iii-the-search-for-spock-the-making-of-the-classic-film-by-john-and-maria-jose-tenuto\/\"><cite>Star Trek III: The Search for Spock The Making of the Classic Film<\/cite><\/a> by John and Maria Jose Tenuto<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2025\/09\/14\/the-kaiju-preservation-society-by-john-scalzi\/\"><cite>The Kaiju Preservation Society<\/cite><\/a> by John Scalzi<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And I&#8217;ve just started Lois McMaster Bujold&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/app.thestorygraph.com\/books\/9d449521-ea24-48c9-a90c-cbf728c74e58\"><cite>The Curse of Chalion<\/cite><\/a>, as a precursor to moving forward on my <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/hugo-reading\/\">Hugo best novel reading project<\/a>; this one isn&#8217;t a Hugo winner, but its immediate sequel is. With how much I enjoyed Bujold&#8217;s Vorkosigan saga, which though sci-fi, combined two genres that aren&#8217;t my usual thing (military SF and romance), I&#8217;m curious what I&#8217;ll think of her in the fantasy realm, which is also secondary to SF in my interests.<\/p>\n<h2>&#x1f4fa; Watching<\/h2>\n<p>Two movies this week:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/letterboxd.com\/djwudi\/film\/the-phoenician-scheme\/\"><cite>The Phoenician Scheme<\/cite><\/a> (&#x2b50;&#xfe0f;&#x2b50;&#xfe0f;&#x2b50;&#xfe0f;): I am absolutely a sucker for Anderson\u2019s quirky hyper-stylized films.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/letterboxd.com\/djwudi\/film\/the-thursday-murder-club\/\"><cite>The Thursday Murder Club<\/cite><\/a> (&#x2b50;&#xfe0f;&#x2b50;&#xfe0f;&#x2b50;&#xfe0f;): Take some of today\u2019s most known British actors and let \u2018em run around having fun in a murder mystery. Quite enjoyable.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>&#x1f517; Linking<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Erin Reed: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erininthemorning.com\/p\/we-must-not-posthumously-sanitize\">We Must Not Posthumously Sanitize Charlie Kirk&#8217;s Hateful Life<\/a>: &#8220;Charlie Kirk was not \u201cpracticing politics the right way.\u201d His work should never \u201cbe continued.\u201d He embodied everything corrosive about American politics today. [\u2026] His model of politics was not dialogue, but trolling: hopping from campus to campus to bait students, churn out sound bites, and spread hate. And his rhetoric was not debate\u2014it was violent, dehumanizing, and designed to put targets on people\u2019s backs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Elizabeth Spiers at <cite>The Nation<\/cite>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/politics\/charlie-kirk-assassination-maga\/\">Charlie Kirk\u2019s Legacy Deserves No Mourning<\/a>: &#8220;There is no requirement to take part in this whitewashing campaign, and refusing to join in doesn\u2019t make anyone a bad person. It\u2019s a choice to write an obituary that begins &#8216;Joseph Goebbels was a gifted marketer and loving father to six children.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Identity 4: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.identity4.com\/2025-racintosh-plus\/\">Racintosh Plus<\/a>: Really impressive work putting a Mac Plus into a one-unit rack mount casing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A week in the life of\u2026.
