{"id":7756,"date":"2009-09-14T11:39:59","date_gmt":"2009-09-14T18:39:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/?p=7756"},"modified":"2020-01-02T11:43:06","modified_gmt":"2020-01-02T19:43:06","slug":"geek-appreciation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2009\/09\/14\/geek-appreciation\/","title":{"rendered":"Geek Appreciation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Things I love about the geek community: within the first half hour of Saturday&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.norwescon.org\/\" title=\"Norwescon\">Norwescon<\/a> planning meeting, I was complimented on my shoes (black converse with a white &#8220;hawaiian monkey skull&#8221; design that looks vaguely Grateful Dead-ish), my belt (the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utilikilts.com\/store\/pinfo.php?cPath=14&amp;products_id=51\" title=\"Utilikilts: Custom Utilikilt* Airline Safety Belt\">Utilikilts airplane belt<\/a>), and my shirt (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasoncross.com\/default.asp?blogID=497\" title=\"Jason Cross: Frakkin' Toaster\">Frakkin&#8217; Toasters<\/a>). The utilikilt, however, was too everyday and normal for this crowd to be worthy of mention. This greatly amused me.<\/p>\n<p>(I actually did get a compliment on the Utilikilt as well, toward the end of the meeting. This left only my socks and undershirt as uncomplimented wardrobe items by the time I left. I may not be a <em>conventional<\/em> dresser, but apparently I&#8217;m a pretty snappy dresser&#8230;at least by geek standards!)<\/p>\n<p>Also: regular slips when mentioning URLs and e-mail addresses due to the recent change from a .net to a .org address, with accompanying cries of &#8220;ORG&#8230;(asm)&#8230;!&#8221; from the peanut gallery. The only meeting I&#8217;ve ever been to with that many public (dot)org(asmic) cries. Hilarious.<\/p>\n<p>Also nice: a meeting that not only progresses on schedule, but ends a <em>full hour<\/em> earlier than planned.
