href=\"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2009\/09\/18\/summer-vacation-09-part-iia-travel\/\" title=\"Eclecticism: Summer Vacation '09 Part IIa: Travel\">Previously<\/a>: Ashland to Carlsbad by way of Fresno. Mostly a lot of driving.<\/p>\n<p>Having grown up with frequent visits to her family in this part of the country, Prairie had a few things that she knew she wanted to introduce me to while we were down here. First thing on the list, for our first full day, was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiegozoo.org\/\" title=\"San Diego Zoo\">San Diego Zoo<\/a>. We got up nice and early, borrowed her grandpa&#8217;s little Garmin GPS navigator (which was usually handy, occasionally frustrating, and often amusingly bad at pronouncing the Spanish streetnames of southern California), and found our way down to the zoo.<\/p>\n<p>Prairie had told me a lot about how good the San Diego Zoo was &#8212; how big, how well-renowned, how many animals, and so on &#8212; and for the most part, I do have to agree&#8230;that&#8217;s a <em>really<\/em> impressive zoo! My only complaint was simply that we each have our favorite animals, and while Prairie was treated to not just one, but <em>two<\/em> kinds of hippos (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/djwudi\/3939283542\/in\/set-72157622399838824\/\" title=\"Vacation IIb: San Diego Zoo 29\">regular<\/a> <em>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/djwudi\/3939212418\/in\/set-72157622399838824\/\" title=\"Vacation IIb: San Diego Zoo 5\">pygmy<\/a><\/em>, which she&#8217;s sure is small enough to live quite happily in her bathtub, and expects hers to be delivered any day now)&#8230;well, there&#8217;s a sad and disturbing lack of penguins at this zoo! Harrumpf. <em>Quite<\/em> disappointing, I tell you.<\/p>\n<p>(Well, okay&#8230;maybe not <em>that<\/em> disappointing, since there is this place called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seaworld.com\/sandiego\/\" title=\"Sea World San Diego\">Sea World<\/a> not terribly far away, which we just may have visited the next day, and which possibly has an extremely good penguin display. Perhaps. But. Still. No penguins.)<\/p>\n<p>Lack of penguins aside, though, that&#8217;s quite a zoo. We spent the entire morning and a good chunk of the afternoon wandering around, starting with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/search\/?q=sandiegozoo+hippo&amp;m=tags&amp;w=35034356271%40N01&amp;z=e\" title=\"Flickr tag search: sandiegozoo hippo\">hippos<\/a> (for Prairie), finding the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/search\/?z=e&amp;w=35034356271%40N01&amp;q=sandiegozoo+bonobo&amp;m=tags\" title=\"Flickr tag search: sandiegozoo bonobo\">bonobos<\/a> for Shelly, and then just striking out randomly to see what we could see. One of the nice things about getting there right when the doors opened was that many of the animals are more active in the cool of the morning, so we were able to see things like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/search\/?z=e&amp;w=35034356271%40N01&amp;q=sandiegozoo+grizzly&amp;m=tags\" title=\"Flickr tag search: sandiegozoo grizzly\">grizzly bears<\/a> playing in their pool and two of the zoo&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/search\/?z=e&amp;w=35034356271%40N01&amp;q=sandiegozoo+panda&amp;m=tags\" title=\"Flickr tag search: sandiegozoo panda\">pandas<\/a> exploring their area. Some of my favorite photos ended up being of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/search\/?z=e&amp;w=35034356271%40N01&amp;q=sandiegozoo+meerkat&amp;m=tags\" title=\"Flickr tag search: sandiegozoo meerkat\">meerkats<\/a> (which are just too cute <em>not<\/em> to be perfect subjects) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/search\/?z=e&amp;w=35034356271%40N01&amp;q=sandiegozoo+silveredleaflangur&amp;m=tags\" title=\"Flickr tag search: sandiegozoo silveredleaflangur\">silvered leaf-langurs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, quite a fun day!
