{"id":9426,"date":"2013-07-03T13:16:26","date_gmt":"2013-07-03T20:16:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/?p=9426"},"modified":"2022-04-29T14:52:41","modified_gmt":"2022-04-29T21:52:41","slug":"personal-privileges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelhans.com\/eclecticism\/2013\/07\/03\/personal-privileges\/","title":{"rendered":"Personal Privileges"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class='__iawmlf-post-loop-links' style='display:none;' data-iawmlf-post-links='[]'><\/div>\n<p>A list that rumbled its way through my head today at lunch: I am a&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>40 year old (neither particularly old nor young)<\/li>\n<li>middle-class (not rich, but by no means poor)<\/li>\n<li>employed<\/li>\n<li>cisgender<\/li>\n<li>straight<\/li>\n<li>white<\/li>\n<li>male<\/li>\n<li>married<\/li>\n<li>homeowner<\/li>\n<li>in good physical and mental health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That&#8217;s a whole lot of privilege all piled up. And I&#8217;m sure that doesn&#8217;t cover all of it.<\/p>\n<p>I have friends and acquaintances (and there are millions of others just here in the United States whom I&#8217;ve never met) who don&#8217;t fit into one, a few, or all of those categories. They have <em>every<\/em> right to live their lives just as comfortably and without fear of repression, censure, or attack as I do. But for far too many of them, that&#8217;s just not possible.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s why, more and more, I&#8217;ve been finding it <em>incredibly<\/em> important to pay attention to issues like equality, sexism, racism, ageism, and whatever other -isms we all come across, directly or indirectly, in our day-to-day lives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A list that rumbled its way through my head today at lunch: I am a 40 year old middle-class employed cisgendered straight white male married homeowner in good physical and mental health.
