TPBETA 1505

This entry was published at least two years ago (originally posted on July 21, 2003). Since that time the information may have become outdated or my beliefs may have changed (in general, assume a more open and liberal current viewpoint). A fuller disclaimer is available.

TPBETA 1505

My own little concept for marking my spot as a TypePad beta tester. A small badge, with ‘TPBETA’ on the left, and ‘1505’ on the right. 1505 is the ID number for my TP blog — obviously, the older the blog, the lower the ID number will be. Just another idea to toss into the mix of ideas running around right now. ;)

On the off chance anyone wants to duplicate this, I used the Kalsey Button Maker with the following settings:

  • Outer border: 666666
  • Inner border: ffffff
  • Bar position: 50 pixels from left
  • Left box:
    • Text: tpbeta
    • Background: 006699
    • Text color: ffffff
    • Text start: 5 pixels from left
  • Right box:
    • Text: 1505
    • Background: dddddd
    • Text color: 000000
    • Text start: 4 pixels from the bar

Update (prompted by Grumpy’s comment): You can find your blog ID# by logging into your TypePad admin page, going to your weblog editing screen, and checking the address bar of your browser. The end of the URL will look something like blog_id=1505 — there you go!

  1. That’s a great idea; but, please tell me — where do I find my ID number? I’ve looked high and low and can’t see anything that resembles a Typepad ID nubmer.

  2. Well, yeah, but you…you’re…

    ADAM KALSEY.

Without whom, my cute lil’ ‘TPBETA’ button would have been much harder to create.

Without whom, I wouldn’t have that nifty ‘Related Posts’ sidebar on my other weblog (one of the few things I’ll miss if/when I move to TypePad permanently).

Without whom, I wouldn’t have waxed nostalgiac and inflicted my Newly Digital post on the unsuspecting web (well, okay, not entirely true, since it was a rehash of an earlier post).

Okay, I’m done. Annoying enough? ;)

Seriously, though, it’s been amusing me. Apparently that little ‘TPBETA’ button has caught on, I’m catching glimpses of it on quite a few TypePad sites as I bounce around. It’s cool and all, but I swear — 95% of the buttons I see have lower numbers than mine! I tell ya, seeing things like that just does wonders for one’s ego. ;)

  3. You’re giving me entirely too much credit. The only reason I have a low number is I whined at Anil to give me access to the alpha test so that we could make sure Zempt worked with it.

Feel free to use my number in your button. Live vicariously though me.

  4. Well, sure I am. But somebody’s gotta do it, right? ;)

And I can make myself #60, huh? Ooooh…(rubs his hands together, cackling with glee)…one more step on the road to global domination!

    Or something like that.

  5. Excuse my ignorance, but do you have to be a Pro user to add the button? I’m a Plus user and can’t figure out how to add one.

  6. No excuses necessary! Here’s one solution I’ve seen, it should work for either Plus or Basic users:

    1. Make the button, and save it to your computer.
    2. Go to your ‘New Post’ screen, and use the ‘Upload File’ link to upload the button to your TypePad account.
    3. After it uploads, choose ’embedded image’, don’t bother creating a thumbnail, and choose ‘show me the HTML’.
    4. When TypePad shows you the HTML code, copy the IMG tag — it will look something like <img src=”/yourblog/button.png” width=”80″ height=”15″ border=”0″ />.
    5. Create a new TypeList.
    6. Add an item to the TypeList, and put the IMG HTML tag into the name field of that TypeList entry. You can leave the ‘Link’ field empty if you want, or you can add a link to the button — I’ve seen some people link to the TypePad home page, I’ve seen others link to this page.
    7. Now, once you enable the display of that new TypeList (under Your Weblog :: Edit Design :: Content), the button should show on your page.

    Hopefully all this helped!
