This entry was published at least two years ago (originally posted on November 10, 2003). Since that time the information may have become outdated or my beliefs may have changed (in general, assume a more open and liberal current viewpoint). A fuller disclaimer is available.
Apple’s iTunes Music Store has been named “Invention of the Year” by Time Magazine!
Other inventions this year may have more altruistic intentions (like Dean Kamen’s water purifier) or be more visible on street corners (like those ubiquitous camera cell phones). But for finally finding a middle ground between the foot-dragging record labels and the free-for-all digital pirates and for creating a bandwagon onto which its competitors immediately jumped, Apple’s iTunes Music Store is Time’s Coolest Invention of 2003.
Yeah digital distribution services like apple iTunes are the future,
though I think it’s longer-off than the media hype would have us believe.
It’s at such an early stage that it will be years before most of the world
uses it as the main way to get music.
Whatever I hope independent artists eventually get to feel the benefit.
Apple have stated “We want every piece of music ever recorded.” But on
the launch of windows itunes hardly any indies can be found in the catalogue.
This is regarding your ‘elsewhere’ miniblog – but i stuck it here ’cause I knew you’d see it. ;)
Two things –
Seems that when Joe Shmuck ripped off your site design, your subsequent stylesheet edit didn’t make it to this blog – doesn’t make a difference until you go to the direct link of a post, and then the tongue-flapping image is your banner. It’s your old design with all the extra info on the side as well, I don’t know how much that matters to you.
Could you reinstate the feature where I can find the archives of that blog? I was looking for the post on a website that showed the before and after of an image retouch for a magazine, I know it’s there somewhere, I just gotta go find it.
Also – I’ve noticed a few times now that you don’t have search capabilities on this site – is this a Typepad issue? Just curious, as I’ve got to get myself signed up before the end of the month. :)

I too hope digital distribution tools like Itunes and Rhapsody allow independents to open their music up to a global audience. Websites such as CD Baby are helping to make this a reality for independent artists worldwide. Their royalty rate is alos very favourable.
Would that be nice to have new songs downloaded wirelessly directly into your MP3 player…
