Bad headline award

This entry was published at least two years ago (originally posted on November 12, 2003). Since that time the information may have become outdated or my beliefs may have changed (in general, assume a more open and liberal current viewpoint). A fuller disclaimer is available.

One of the many reasons why I love the English language is how sentences can parse in entirely unintentional ways. For instance, from the Washington Post:

Girl Scout Beaver Traps Upset Activists

Those poor activists! Someone really needs to cheer them up — but first, get them away from that Girl Scout!

The copyeditors really should have caught that one before it made it to press…

  1. I want to know where the counter-protest was! I fully support Girl Scout Beaver Traps, and think that they should not only be manditory, but a necessary part of earning your Eagle Scout Rank! (In a fully fundimentalist christian, homophobic way!)

    Oh. Wait. RTFA…..

  2. you would actually think that a little girl scout beaver would make the activists rather happy.. especially if the activist was anything like CPS.

  3. Last night, KSKA reported Senator Stevens was about to comment on his “controversial fish rider.”

I immediately thought of the need for a very small man or a very large fish. I wondered where they got saddles that size. Then I realized perhaps it was the fish being ridden which were controversial, such as those on the endangered species list.

Imagine my chagrin when it turned out it was just an addition to a bill in Congress.

    Love
