Bag’n’Pipe Hoppers

This entry was published at least two years ago (originally posted on July 18, 2005). Since that time the information may have become outdated or my beliefs may have changed (in general, assume a more open and liberal current viewpoint). A fuller disclaimer is available.

Bag'n'Pipe HoppersOne of the local street performers I enjoy running into is the Bag’n’Pipe Hoppers. Actually two performers who team up together from time to time — Don P. Scobie on bagpipes* and Jesse Bishop (or Bishnutz) on drums — their combination of traditional Scottish piping and modern hip-hop beats is always fun to stumble across.

Last Friday evening while waiting for the Half-Blood Prince to come out, Prairie and I took a wander and found the Bag’n’Pipe Hoppers playing at the corner of 4th and Pine. Their playing had attracted a small crowd of onlookers, including a few b-boys breakdancing beside them, so I grabbed my camera and recorded a few minutes of video.

May 2010 Update: Though the Bag’n’Pipe Hoppers are no more, Don has gone on to form a new outfit, Nae Regrets. Worth checking out!

  • Prairie’s especially fond of running across Don (a.k.a. “the hot bagpiper guy“), whether or not he’s playing with Jesse. Her only complaint about the performance we saw was that Don wasn’t wearing his kilt. :)

  1. Hey Michael, just dropped by since a friend of mine Googled me and came up with your posts about my band. Thought I’d update a few things here…

    1. While the NWLink URL above leads to my personal site, I have recently gotten myself the domain of http://www.BagpiperDon.com . I also have the MySpace profile of the1stsexsymbolofhighlandbagpiping which of course features more pictures and some audio of my personal album project(s?).

    2. I’m dumping Tribe.net soon — ENTIRELY — so the band’s profile will be toot-a-loo along with the writing & etc etc. The band’s MySpace profile (which I also maintain) is thebagnpipehoppers — also featuring pictures, audio, AND Michael’s vid — Thanks again, MH!

    3. Anytime someone finds a vid of myself or my band, or pictures — particularly ones that I might be able to make use of on my website or MySpace profile (eg pictures taken by a person not in a professional capacity like a news-reporter) — PLEASE LET ME KNOW. Send me the link so I can find them and save them myself.

Thanks again for the interest & support, and please keep an eye out for what I’m doing.

    Best,

    Don

(yeah, the really-real guy himself — cheers!)

  2. Hey — little update — my MySpace profile is no longer that whole ‘1st sex symbol’, now it’s BagpiperDon. I’m job hunting right now, and I’ve had to retract the phrase online — I mean, sure, it’s still the rhumor I’m trying to get started about myself, but I’m trying to make that phrase less obvious to perspective employers … tho it can still be found. Anyway, hopfully this will just help to make an innocent line a bit more obviously-intended-as-humorous.
