Why Target’s target is red

This entry was published at least two years ago (originally posted on October 22, 2005). Since that time the information may have become outdated or my beliefs may have changed (in general, assume a more open and liberal current viewpoint). A fuller disclaimer is available.

Hmmmm…suck-o: Target’s CEO is a massive republican.

Now we know why the target is red.

And, we seem to be getting a clearer picture as to why Target has sided with the far-right Christian wackos, in permitting their pharmacists to turn you away because they think you’re a sinner.

Over the years, Target CEO Robert Ulrich has donated:

  • $71,353 to Republicans
  • $3,660 to Democrats

Hmmm… that’s interesting.

Perhaps my favorite donation is the $5,000 he gave just two months ago to a PAC named “Every Republican is Crucial.”

And here’s some info from the first link in the quoted text above, because I hadn’t heard about this before:

Planned Parenthood has had other communications with Target. Target’s policy is that the customer can go to hell if their pharmacist thinks you’re a sinner. Target will let their pharmacist turn you away so that YOU have to go find another pharmacy, rather than their pharmacist getting another frigging job.

You have to love Target. They’re willing to hire people who don’t wan to do the very job they’re applying for. And their own employee’s bigotry and bias matters more to them than the emergency health needs of their own customers.

Dammit — is it even possible to shop guilt-free anymore? As far as I can tell, the only way to make sure as little of my money as possible goes to causes and organizations that I don’t support is to keep it in a jar in my mattress and never spend any of it.

  1. I read the letter you linked to, and it struck me that this Pharmacist put Target in a sticky situation. It is illegal for Target to force employees to go against their religious beliefs. It is illegal to refuse to hire someone because of their religious beliefs and it is illegal to ask anyone what their religious beliefs are in a job interview. Civil Rights apply even to people we detest.

  2. About the only place I’ve found that I don’t despise is CostCo. The problem is, sometimes you just need a packet of Post-It notes, not a gross of them.

  3. Try Hardwick’s. They’ve got a decent amount of house wares along with all the tools, as well as a furniture section. (Full disclosure: I work there. Well, until the end of the week, as I’m leaving for CA with Laurabelle) I try to stick with small businesses and co-ops. I wish there were more not-for-profits around (the Providence Hospital system is not-for-profit, but they sold their Seattle hospital to Swedish a few years ago), they work better for things like health-care and insurance (no profit motive to interfere with moral judgement).

  4. I have worked at a target before and it is one of the most politically correct stores I have ever been to. They are typically very accepting of all people whether they are gay, black, white, Asian, male or female. In fact my Manager was gay actually. So it must have just been a personal problem that that one pharmacist had and to be honest i’m sure target was trying to find a way and reason to fire them for quite a while. They just have to have a specific reason other than “we don’t agree with their views on things” because that would be considered discrimination as well.
