    • The Police Must Be Better All the progress that has been made has happened not in spite of the protests, but _because of_ the protests. And for that very reason, the protests will continue as long as the police as a whole act the way they do.
    • Martin Luther King on Violent Protests [Black people] could not prosper in a game where they were the only ones expected to play by the rules.

    • Snorkel Practice So now we've got flippers. Apparently, this makes Prairie a mermaid...and me a frog. I don't know, I just report what I'm told.... ;)

    • In Search of a Sugar Daddy Y'know, all I need right now is for some kind wealthy benefactor to drop about six grand in my bank account. Of course, that's not exactly likely. Possible sure...but improbable enough that as I don't have easy access to the Heart of Gold, I don't expect it'll happen.
    • The IRS is more thorough than I thought… Amusing bits from IRS Publication 525, Taxable and Nontaxable Income, Other Income: Bribes, Found Property, Illegal Income, Kickbacks, and Stolen Property.
    • DJ Humor Two DJs were talking. One of them says 'Hey, you should see this movie I saw the other day! It's GREAT!' The other one replies, 'Oh, I don't know...Who's the projectionist?'

    • One down… On a not entirely unrelated note, though, I had one thought when I saw Tenet's picture in this Time article: George Tenet and Bill Murray…separated at birth?
    • Folklife reports I only made it out to one day of this year's Folklife festival, but Chas made it through all four days. He's got a good writeup of his time there, contrasting it to a similar event in DC and pointing out quite a few links to local bands worth investigating.
    • Withdrawal symptoms Here’s what I think the truth is: We are all addicts of fossil fuels in a state of denial, about to face cold turkey. And like so many addicts about to face cold turkey, our leaders are now committing violent crimes to get what little is left of what we’re hooked on.

    • Don't talk and drive I've never felt that talking and driving at the same time was a good idea, even to the point of ticking off some of my friends by refusing to talk with them if they were driving. If it were up to me, there'd just be a non-conditional ban on using cell phones while driving, period.

    • I used to have fingerprints Saturday was a fun day. At least, it was if you consider that I'm using 'fun' in the most bitterly sarcastic way humanly possible.
    • Americans are never this nice An African Masai tribesman who was visiting New York at the time of the 9/11 attacks went back to his tribe and explained to them what had happened and how it had affected life here in America. The tribe took donations and are donating 14 head of cattle to the United States of America!
    • Kidney Thieves/16 Volt/KMFDM/Pig Well, it took a few days for me to get off my lazy butt and actually put anything up on my page — but the concert I went to on Friday night kicked much ass!

    • DVDs: Closets, aliens, and dinos I was only planning on one purchase for the week, but ended up with three, as I got a $25 gift certificate from Suncoast the other day. The Celluloid Closet, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Allosaurus.
    • Unemployed weekends Well, it's official. As of 5pm today, I am officially unemployed. Now I've got no solid pans for the next two weeks other than getting everything I own sorted, packed, and ready to ship to Seattle. Kinda cool -- kinda scary. I haven't been without a job in about ten years...this is a new thing for me.
