Worth Reading

This is a hand-curated list of posts from the archives that I think are particularly worth visiting. I might be proud of the writing, they might say something about me and who I am, or have something in particular to do with my interests. It’s a sparse list for the moment, but will grow as I continue to dig through my archives and re-discover gems.

  • Change is Good (March 13, 2022) “I sincerely believe that learning, growing, examining, and often changing beliefs is an integral part of being a responsible human being.”
  • Twenty Years of Blogging (November 25, 2020) “Twenty years ago today, I became a blogger.”
  • An Open Letter: I’m a Liberal (January 15, 2018) “An open letter to those who don’t know me yet, or have just met me recently enough that my not-at-all-closeted political leanings have not yet become blindingly obvious: I’m a liberal, and a pretty far left-leaning liberal at that.”
  • DVD/Blu-Ray conversion with text soft subs on Mac OS X (January 30, 2015) “How to convert DVDs or Blu-Rays for personal use on OS X, including OCR conversion of subtitles to text-based .srt files suitable for use as ‘soft’ subtitles (rendered by the video player rather than burned into the image).”
  • Death of a Furby (October 29, 2013) “I’ve always felt a weird sort of guilty glee at my role in the (temporary) psychological torture and murder of a poor, innocent Furby.”
  • Personal Privileges (July 3, 2013) “A list that rumbled its way through my head today at lunch: I am a 40 year old middle-class employed cisgender straight white male married homeowner in good physical and mental health. That’s a whole lot of privilege all piled up. And I’m sure that doesn’t cover all of it.”
  • My First and Only Online Handle (July 2, 2011) “I’m actually kind of lucky in this respect. I’ve only ever used one online handle, and while I’ve deprecated it a bit these days in favor of my real name, I still actively use it as a login name and occasional identifier. Most anyone who’s interacted with me online for any appreciable amount of time will recognize my online alias of djwudi.”
  • My first computer: The Osborne 1 (April 3, 2011) “This Sunday marks the 20th anniversary of the introduction of one of the first ‘portable’ computers, which also happens to be the first home computer that my family had. This was the machine that first got me into much of the geekery I’ve been into for years.”
  • APA 6th Edition Paper Template for Apple Pages (iWork) (October 28, 2010) “An APA 6th Edition template for Apple’s Pages word processor.”
  • DJ Wüdi Mashup: Give It A Crablouse (July 7, 2010) “Sources: The Lords of Acid’s The Crablouse (In Its Native Environment), and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Give It Away.”
  • The Blue Box (June 30, 2010) “When Kevin and I were younger, and too small to work dad’s record player, we had our own: the classic Fisher-Price phonograph. To go with this, Dad gave us a small blue box (well, blue, white, and green, but I’ve always thought of it as blue) with a bunch of old 45s that he and his brother Doug had collected when they were younger.”
  • My Famous Awkward Family (June 23, 2010) “Today, at long last, I got my copy of the AFP book, which uses both photos we submitted! One is on the back cover, and one is given the place of honor as the first featured photo in the book, opening Chapter One. We’re also given thanks in the Acknowledgements section as the first family to send in a shot.”
  • Why I wish NIN’s ‘Strobe Light’ was Real (April 1, 2009) “As the day wore on, I started thinking about just why this particular joke appealed to me so much, and why — as horrid as this may seem to some people — yes, I wish this one wasn’t a hoax. If this were a real album, I’d gladly pay good money to pick it up.”
  • 25 Random Things Meme (February 26, 2009) “Naysayers be damned, here’s my entry into the ‘twenty-five random things about you’ meme that’s currently flying around Facebook (and, to a limited extent, creeping out into the rest of the blog world).”
  • More on Pixar (Or, Why I Suck at Soundbites) (July 3, 2008) “A couple weeks ago, I got an e-mail from Jaime Weinman, who writes for Macleans, asking for a quote for an article she was working on about Pixar’s future. I agreed, and in my usual style, sent her a small book. Proving yet again that I just cannot write for soundbites, my quote was boiled down to one simple line.”
  • So What’s the Deal With the Kilt, Anyway? (August 17, 2005) “What’s the draw of the kilt? What I mean is, why is a utilikilt better than wearing shorts or pants? Do you take a lot of crap from strangers when you’re out in public?”
  • DJ Wüdi Mashup: Just Can’t Get Flexible in 1999 (March 16, 2005) “Sources: Depeche Mode’s ‘Flexible’ and ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ and Prince’s ‘1999’.”
  • Back when Anchorage was Cool (April 4, 2004) “Believe it or not — and these days, many people likely wouldn’t — Anchorage used to have a pretty active underground scene. I spent many, many years as part of it, both as a spectator and as a participant, and it went a long way to shaping the person I am today. I’ve got a lot of fond memories of those times.”
  • Fifteen Minutes of Fame (October 29, 2003) “Another major followup post, answering questions about my experiences over the past couple days — Slashdotting and all!”
  • Of Blogging and Unemployment (October 27, 2003) “And that simply, as of about 2pm today, I once again joined the ranks of the unemployed.”
  • Newly Digital (Back in the Day, redux) (June 1, 2003) “Adam Kalsey has started a project he calls Newly Digital — a collection of stories about when people first discovered computers, got online, and so on. In that vein, I’m updating and reposting my ‘Back in the Day’ post from roughly a year ago, to contribute to the project. Enjoy!”
  • Own Yourself (December 19, 2002) “Own your name. Buy the domain name, get yourself linked to, and put up a page. Make it a blank page, if you want. Fill it with disinformation or gibberish. Or, just reveal the parts of your life that you feel represent you most effectively on the web. But if you care about your privacy, and you care about your identity, take the steps to control it now.”
  • George (October 28, 2002) “Whatever the cause, the effect was an animal more purely and innately demonic than any other that I’ve ever run across, or would care to run across in the future.”
