Experience level

This entry was published at least two years ago (originally posted on August 17, 2003). Since that time the information may have become outdated or my beliefs may have changed (in general, assume a more open and liberal current viewpoint). A fuller disclaimer is available.

This just popped into my head. Earlier this week, I described my level of computer experience as “somewhere between ‘power user’ and ‘geek’ — in other words, I know enough to be dangerous, but not enough to get paid for it.”

It amused me at the time, and I meant to blog it, but I didn’t then. But now I remembered, so I did. Whee. I’m sure you’re all fascinated, just utterly fascinated.

I’m going away again now.

  1. Totally there with you. I can speak the language of the IT department, but I could never be indoctrinated into the priesthood myself. I lack the credentials. :-)

  2. That’s actually a good description of it. I like rating on the number of minutes that the response to the question “so what sort of computer do you have?” is.

  3. That’s definitely a good one. I could see minutes mounting up easily, depending on how many machines you had to list, and how detailed you got in the descriptions (both of which I’m likely to take far too long doing…).

Let’s see…I can’t count minutes too easily while typing, but a pizza boy asked me this last night (when he saw the three 17″ monitors lined up on my desk), and I was able to list off…

    1. Blue and White 350Mhz G3 (main work machine, dual monitors)
    2. Custom-built 1.2Ghz? PC (hardly touched unless i’m checking webpages)
    3. Original Rev. A iMac 233Mhz G3 (dead, on the floor next to my desk)
    4. Power Mac 6100 66Mhz 601 (dead, under my bed)

…currently in the apartment, plus a brand-spanking-new 1.8Ghz G5 that should be here in the next few days. If he’d asked a month ago, I could have added the old Performa that I was tweaking for my landlord, and the Wallstreet PowerBook of my ex-girlfriend’s that was in my closet, but they’ve both been picked back up now.
