Yikes!

This entry was published at least two years ago (originally posted on October 29, 2003). Since that time the information may have become outdated or my beliefs may have changed (in general, assume a more open and liberal current viewpoint). A fuller disclaimer is available.

Oh my lord — I’ve been slashdotted.

I have literally hundreds of messages in my e-mail inbox. I’ll pop my head up as soon as I can.

In the meantime, I think I need to put Sheep on Drugs’ ’15 Minutes of Fame’ on repeat.

  1. Have to say though your server seems to be doing quite well considering the /. effect. Most of the time by the time I see the post there the linked site has long been down. Anyway I hope you find a good job soon, and that you won’t have a million-dollar bill for your bandwidth costs.

  2. Glad to see your site isn’t down after that mention on the slashdot :) I especially liked it when they put the mention that Microsoft is not yet the government. I hope you’ll find a great job soon and one where your boss can’t just fire you over a blog entry :) We care, y’see.

Bestest of Luck coming from Switzerland! ^_^

  3. I’m impressed that this place is still up and running. Not that impressed, considering that the server seems to be running Linux and Apache. An IIS server woulda been down hours ago. ;)

Anyway, sorry to hear about your troubles. I’m sure that with all the publicity you should be getting some donations or an offer somewhere. Good luck!

  4. Since he is using MovableType his pages are rendered as HTML. The servers aren’t having to server database and PHP. Otherwise even linux and apache might have trouble. I have had trouble on big news days on my news server at work.

  5. Just so you know, Wudi. Christoph wasn’t the only one to submit to /. He had a better hook line, though. ;-)

Here are your recent submissions to Slashdot, and their status within the system:

    • 2003-10-28 05:52:33 Blogger and MS Vendor terminated for blog post (yro, privacy) (rejected)
  6. I was so freaking amazed while reading slashdot this afternoon, both because of the fact that you were on it and what microsoft has done.
Sadly, all I can do is say that I support you in any way I can.

  7. Hey!

Heard your story on the macintosh community on livejournal.

Have you considered appying at Apple? ;)

Reading your story, one gets the distinct feeling of a CIA agent being expelled from the Pentagon in the 1950s after saying that communism isn’t as bad as they would ahve us believe!

    Good luck with your searching!

  8. I find it highly dubious that Microsoft sacked this guy purely on the basis that he posted a photograph of some G5’s arriving at Redmond. Perhaps it’s more likely that one of his bosses came across this site and saw that our famed hero here was spending MUCH more time posting articles on his weblog than actually doing work??

    Just my 2 cents…

  9. 15 mins of fame is a top quality song!!
Was in rotation for a month or so at a club I go to
regularly but most people have never heard
    of it!!!!

    Top Quality Listening!!!!!!11
    :)

  10. hey… how about an ‘update’ post to perhaps stave off the email flood a bit? ;)

hope all is well in the emerald city with you today. laters babycakes…

  11. onward with your 15 minutes of fame…

I was looking for information on the solar storm that’s hitting the earth right now – classified as a ‘G5’ level storm – and typed in G5 into the Google news search.

First on the list – Microsoft fires employee over G5 photos, blog from the Mac News Network.

    Damn!

Please take heed of the fact that your blog is getting a LOT of attention right now. People are going to nitpick your word and phrase choice very closely. I won’t say ‘watch what you say’ but I will say, ‘be wary of your word choice and phrasing.’ The last thing you need is to be the Steve Bartman of the geek world.

  12. From an occasional reader – sorry about your being let go. What a bummer. You are handling it with good balance and maturity in your writing, which can only serve you well in life. Good luck finding your next job.

  13. Good luck guy, I hope everything works out….I found out about the whole deal through /. Personally my respect for microsoft is less and less every day. Now given this, they are just being bullies.

    all the best.
