Clan Hamilton

This entry was published at least two years ago (originally posted on April 7, 2006). Since that time the information may have become outdated or my beliefs may have changed (in general, assume a more open and liberal current viewpoint). A fuller disclaimer is available.

I’m a day late on this (April 6th is Tartan Day), but…

Hamilton Clan TartanAccording to our family genealogical charts, six generations ago my ancestor Robert Hamilton was born in Bansbridge Down, Ireland on the 16th of May, 1760. This makes me 1/128th Irish (that we know of), and according to Tartankilts.com, this is the Hamilton clan tartan (though, admittedly, that’s probably the Scottish Hamilton Clan…I have no real idea if there was/is an Irish Hamilton Clan, or whether they have a tartan).

Maybe one of these days, I’ll spring for a “real” tartan kilt. For now, though, the Utilikilts will do me just fine. At least I know I have a tartan in my background, even if it’s pretty far back there.

  1. Even if it WAS an Irish Hamilton clan, chances are pretty good that they are descended from the Scottish Hamilton clan. I know that my great grandfather (or is it great great grandfather?) immigrated to Canada from Ireland, but Waddell is a Scottish name (from Wedale, which is now Stow, near Edinburgh).

  2. If you go to the kilt store in Ballard on Market and (20th or so?), in the old Law Library building, you’ll find there are Irish and Scottish kilts — the Irish being a solid color, rather than the Plaid of the Scots.

In other news, the word ‘Scot’ (I’ve been told, don’t quote me without further research…) in entymalogical circles means something on the order of ‘Irish Missionary’ — I’d imagine there’s a lot of cross-border traveling, breeding and inbreeding of folks looking for Tir Na Nog between Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. The English are still bastards, though. ;-)

FWIW, I trace back to Buccleuch on one side, and County Cork on the other. While there are a dozen “Scott” Plaids, I choose this one, the ancient black and white

  3. We have both the Hamilton and Ward Family Crests as magnets on our fridge, from the last time we were in the U.K. I’ll try to remember to scan the Hamilton one, but, first, I want to scan my driver’s licence, so you can get you new camera.
