    • Book thirty-three of 2018: Star Trek: The Classic Episodes Vol. 2, by James Blish. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
    • Book thirty-two of 2018: Moving Mars, by Greg Bear. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (Actually finished a couple weeks ago, but was vacationing and not posting photos.)
    • A small selection from last week’s vacation trip to Lake Coeur d’Alene.
    • Linkdump for September 1st through September 3rd An automatically generated list of links that caught my eye between September 1st and September 3rd.

    • I’m an iTunes Affilliate Earlier this week, I tossed a link to my linklog to Apple's new iTunes Affiliate program, but didn't write up anything more about it, as at that point, I didn't really know much at all. While I was there, though, I went ahead and tossed in an application…and what do you know, last night I got my e-mail telling me that I was accepted into the program .

    • Democratic debate tomorrow night New Mexico is going to host a 'conversation' style debate among the nine contenders for the Democratic nomination tomorrow night, at the University of New Mexico, Albequerqe.
    • The world's oldest profession Who are some of your favorite historical whores? How about slutty eras? Eras you wish were a little less prudish?
    • Diplomacy based on petulance The Bush Administration continues to amaze me -- they have an amazing ability to firmly put both feet in their mouth with their head up their ass.
  • 2002
    • My new desktop I just found this image (along with a ton of other [often barcode-based] very cool desktop images) at some site that I can't read because it's all in Cryllic.
    • Validation fixed (kinda) One of the stumbling blocks I discovered today about enabling Trackback is that it breaks the W3C Validator -- even though I make sure to use valid XHTML 1.0 in my pages, the validator chokes on the RDF code needed for Trackback to work correctly.
    • Cybersodomy? There's a page for everything on the 'net these days -- even gay robots.
    • Bumbershoot ’02 It's taken me a couple days to get to this, and it's not going to be nearly as long as last year's opus — but I did get to spend last Saturday out at this year's Bumbershoot. Unfortunately, I could only hit one day this year, so I decided to go Saturday, as it seemed to have the best lineup of artists I knew I wanted to see.
  • 2001
    • Bumbershoot ’01: Monday, Sep. 3rd NW Connection Community Choir, Kevin Kent, Bill Dana, Kiki & Herb, Tiger Lillies, WOFA, C.J. Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band, Nikol Collars, and Nina Hynes.

    • Book forty-six of 2019: Dead Wake, by Erik Larson. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Fascinating account of the sinking of the Lusitania, and the many factors that led to the tradgedy. Larson’s historical non-fiction work is great — perfect reading while taking a pleasure cruise vacation!
    • Book forty-five of 2019: Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert Heinlein. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1962 Hugo Best Novel Good story, and this was very likely one of my earliest introductions to any sort of consensual non-monogamy ideas, but gender role and sexuality issues bother me.

    • Yummy treats between movies!
    • Oh, yum. Indian wraps for lunch. So good!
    • Shiny shoe day! I have gold, Prairie has silver. We’re heading to the Cinerama’s 70mm Film Festival today, so we decided to bling it up Hollywood style (on our feet, at least). #chucks #converse

    • Frances: the satellite view Thanks to a program called OSXplanet that puts a map of the globe on my desktop, complete with current cloud patterns, I can watch Hurricane Frances approach the Florida coastline from the comfort of my apartment. Freaky and cool, all at the same time.
    • First Charley, now Frances When Hurricane Charley hit Florida, my grandparents had to be evacuated to a shelter for the duration of the storm. During their time there, Grandpa suffered a fall, ended up in their retirement home's hospital after they returned from the shelter, and was just able to come home to Grandma on Friday. Now, however, with Hurricane Frances bearing down on Florida, word has come that it's highly likely that they will have to evacuate again.

    • Rule #1: Validate Bottom line: valid markup is a Good Thing™. Sure, it's a bit of a pain, and it can take a little time to get used to the conventions involved in writing valid code. The amount of time, effort, and anguish involved in solving niggling little browser issues that valid code saves, though, is more than worth it.

    • Sometimes predictions come true The Federal Emergency Management Agency lists a hurricane strike on New Orleans as one of the most dire threats to the nation, up there with a large earthquake in California or a terrorist attack on New York City. Even the Red Cross no longer opens hurricane shelters in the city, claiming the risk to its workers is too great.

    • What a deal! Y'know, it's really a shame I don't go to Florida State University. Turns out that they're working on setting up a special deal with Apple that would provide free iTunes software to students and allow them to download music for 99 cents per song.
    • Two digits, thousands of votes Issue: Manipulation technique found in the Diebold central tabulator -- 1,000 of these systems are in place, and they count up to two million votes at a time. By entering a 2-digit code in a hidden location, a second set of votes is created. This set of votes can be changed, so that it no longer matches the correct votes. The voting system will then read the totals from the bogus vote set.

    • Upheaval The move is in progress -- tons of boxes filled with crap floating from one apartment to the other, and all sorts of unfun disarray and nastiness. Ugh. Moving's stressful enough when it's anticipated and planned, but having to suddenly dive full-force into it with no advance notice is _horrendous_.

Rimless, fairly small and rectangular, with very thin silver bows, and they come with a set of clip-on shades that match the shape of the lenses exactly. • No, really, it’s innocent! When my 12 year old daughter asked for this for her birthday, I kind of wondered if she was too old for it, but she seems to LOVE it. Her friends love it too! They play for hours in her bedroom with this great toy. They really seem to like the special effects it offers (the sound effects and vibrating). My oldest daughter (17) really likes it too! I reccomend this for all children.
    • Smileys are back! I had this hack installed a while ago, and had managed to kill it -- well, it's back! Now, when I or anyone posting a comment types in a 'smiley' code (for instance, ':)') it will be replaced by the corresponding 'smiley' (in this case, ':)').
    • Suddenly cab drivers seem sane As the city bus drove down the street, two men in the back got into a fight. Concerned for the safety of himself and his other passengers, the driver pulled over to the side of the road and had everyone -- including the two men in the altercation -- evacuate the bus. Everyone did, save one person.

    • Camping Two happier items: I got my financial aid, and Prairie and I are heading up to Mt. Ranier to go camping.
    • It’s Not Time To Go Yet Was wondering if you could do me a favor in your spare time (ha-ha)? ... What I would like to know is -- what are your views on what happens when you die? I really don't have any firm beliefs...but I really love to hear what other people think.
    • So Very Predictable If anyone else in the world were to stand in front of a few hundred thousand people and ask them to throw money at them -- and not just a little money, but nothing smaller than a ten, fifties are preferred -- they'd probably get very soundly beaten. If you happen to be named George Lucas, though, you can get away with it again and again and again...
  • 2003
    • Korea ready to go nuclear? At this rate, we'll be seeing mushroom clouds again before we know it. If we're lucky, they'll be confined to test sites — if we're unlucky Bush's steadfast and stubborn intransigence just may score a body count the US hasn't been party to in decades.
    • Military accounting We keep hearing more and more about how much the reconstruction and rebuilding of Iraq is going to cost (on top of the billions already spent so far for the invasion and occupation). Wouldn't it be nice if we could cut those costs a bit?
    • Interview Me III: From Jonas The third of a few interviews with me, this one with questions courtesy of Jonas.
    • 'Stay away from MS' THE US Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA) has urged the US Department of Homeland Security to avoid using Microsoft software.
    • Howard Dean, rock star And wouldn't it be great…wouldn't it be really bitchin' if you had a political leader who was running for the big office…where you could like them as much as you like your favorite musician?
    • That hurts So…I noticed that you've been an American Express cardholder since I was two.
    • Flying High Howard Dean has gone from nobody to the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination. Now he's a political rock star, and he just went on a coast-to-coast tour to prove it. The Stranger tagged along for the ride.
    • Yahoo! News RSS feeds Jeremy notes today that Yahoo! News now has RSS feeds available. A good thing for finding news — but not for linking to news.
    • Blatant propaganda The Village Voice takes a look at the upcoming 'docudrama' DC 9/11.
    • Outsourcing fund raising? You'd think that if Bush was really concerned about keeping jobs in America, and getting Americans back to work, his campaign wouldn't be outsourcing fund raising phone calls to India.
    • Blogging from Afghanistan His driver, Babrack, although probably not spelt that way, is an ex-Mujahadeen who credits Stallone's performance in Rambo 3 for teaching him the correct technique for firing a rocket launcher and looking good at the same time.
  • 2002
    • Portugal sounds nice… This led to an entertaining little discussion, starting with beth's assertion that '...just for the record not every woman in the world wants an orgasm every time'. Things bounced merrily along for a while, until Miguel Cardoso posted the following entertaining and fascinating rundown of Porgugese sexual customs.
    • WudiVisions One upside of having to redo everything from the ground up is that it's allowing me to play with some ideas that I'd had floating around in my head for a while, and just hadn't tried yet -- and other ideas that have just appeared during this project.
    • Progress It's a long, long way from where we want to be...

    • Got a great present from Prairie today! We got to see this at last year’s #Worldcon (Sasquan), and thought it was great (in the “really cheesy B movie” sense of the word). She remembered it after seeing me talking about the #hugoawards, and ordered us a copy. Yay #Australiens! (238/366)

    • Outside the Canadian Parliament, waiting for a free guided tour and listening to Queen Victoria (not as demised as rumored, apparently) tell us about the history of the area. #latergram
    • We crossed the border into a foreign country and consumed substances illegal in the United States! #latergram #kindereggs
    • Photo bombed by a woolly mammoth! #latergram
    • Photo bombed by Queen Victoria! #latergram
    • This morning, just off the ferry and on Canadian soil. “So we’re Canadians now, right? That’s how it works?” “I don’t think so.” #latergram
    • This morning, somewhere between the U.S. and Canada. We’d just seen a whale off to one side of the ferry! #latergram
    • On the ferry to Canada – off for an international adventure! #heycoho

    • The complimentary newspaper lets Batman get a handle on the local criminal underground. Such as it is.
    • Our hotel is in very easy walking distance of the train station – which will be great for taking the train up to the state fair on Friday! #vacation
    • At my folks’ place for dinner. I do like seeing real mountains out the windows.
    • Batman likes clouds. “That one looks like a dragon! And that one’s a fishie! Er…fish. Got excited. Sorry.”
    • Tuts out Batman likes crime capers for his in-flight entertainment.

    • Dance Off 2006 On something of a whim, thanks to having an evening when I wasn't working and nothing was planned, Prairie and I decided to head down to an event I'd just stumbled across earlier in the day: Dance Off 2006, an annual competition held in the Seattle area for people who want to prove that they have the heart and soul of a dancer, even though they do not have the training of a dancer.

    • Boxes Everywhere! Our living room is filled with boxes. Some full, some partially emptied, some waiting to be broken down and taken out to the recycling...but it's still a _lot_ of boxes. Most of mine are still over at my old apartment, too. The end result is going to be nice, but _man_ is moving a pain in the butt.

    • I had an *rtion More with me finding humor in places I really probably shouldn't.
    • Just keep calm My, what amazingly calm passengers those planes had.
    • Cheney suddenly supports gay marriage Talk about flip-flopping. Dick Cheney, who until now, despite having an openly lesbian daughter, has steadfastly stuck with the party line on gay marriage, suddenly seems to be a little more open-minded about the issue.

    • Another lie Despite the Bush administration's public assertions, these unmanned aerial vehicles weren't designed to dispense biological or chemical weapons.
    • Why I hate George W. Bush When I look at George W. Bush, I don't see a patriot. I see a lying, psychopathic narcissist. And it pains me, it grieves me, it WOUNDS me to realize that this puts me not only in the minority… but in the 'whacko fringe.'
    • SoBig virus source found Security teams have tracked down the original source for the recent SoBig F virus — however, the author is still unknown.
    • Dark Suckers For years, it has been believed that electric bulbs emit light, but recent information has proved otherwise. Electric bulbs don't emit light; they suck dark. Thus, we call these bulbs Dark Suckers.
    • Disney goes Goth (also: 'Bus Life' fan comments) For the fifth year in a row, Disneyland will be creeping with mobs of black-clad death-rocker types for what organizers officially bill as Bats Day in the Fun Park, but what most people just call Goth Day. (Also: Disney's 'Bus Life' fan comments!)
    • Howard Dean rally in Seattle I was already solidly in Dean's camp before this, but being able to see him in person definitely cemented my position — here's hoping that his momentum keeps growing, and we can get him not just the Democratic nomination, but the Presidency in 2004.

    • A few more movies I added three more DVD's to the collection over the weekend. The Black Cauldron, The Cook, the Thief, his Wife, and her Lover, From Dusk 'til Dawn.
