Little Fluffy Clouds

Wispy clouds, Seattle, WAWhat an incredibly gorgeous day today was. Blue skies with light, wispy clouds high in the sky, with temperatures pushing up into the mid-80’s. As soon as I got off from work I made a quick swing through home to drop off my bag, then spent the next two hours wandering around, people watching and taking photos.

Summer is such a wonderful time in Seattle. Gorgeous weather…and gorgeous eye candy! ;) I’m half convinced that Seattle’s reputation as being constantly grey and drizzly is so firmly embedded into the popular consciousness that any time the sun even hints at appearing, everyone is so determined to take as much advantage of it as possible that hemlines raise, necklines drop, and as much flesh is bared to the sun as is legally allowed.

Then, of course, we end up getting day after day after day after day of weather like this.

It’s a good thing. Especially for those of us who have a predilection for wandering around town admiring the scenery.

Mom Visits!

Me and mom, Seattle, WA

I got to spend a nice few hours yesterday with Mom as she passed through Seattle on the tail end of a quick trip to see some family and friends scattered around the lower 48. She showed up at my work just in time for me to head off on my lunch break, took advantage of the empty apartment to nap for a few hours through the latter half of my workday, then we grabbed a quick dinner before getting her on a bus to head back out to the airport for her flight home.

We hit Moby’s, a restaurant in the Convention Center for dinner. The food wasn’t bad, but it seemed a bit pricey (I had a $9 cheeseburger, which was a little overcooked and not as big as a $4 double quarter-pounder with cheese from McDonald’s), and while their ketchup came in Heinz bottles, it definitely wasn’t Heinz — or if it was, it was seriously watered down. Can’t say I give high recommendations to this place.

Record warm temperatures today through Friday…

…according to Weather Underground.

Mid-80’s today, predicted high of 89 tomorrow. Uff-da! Me? I love it. Summer’s back!

The only potential downside is that it looks to be cooling off as the weekend starts, dropping back down into the 60’s with a chance of rain. Still…I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Writing Assignment

(I actually think this is an old joke that I’ve heard before, but it got a good laugh out of me today when Thom posted it…)

A college class was told to write a short story in as few words as possible. The instructions were that the story must contain the following three subject areas:

  1. Religion

  2. Sexuality

  3. Mystery

There was only one A+ paper in the entire class.

Good God, I’m pregnant! I wonder who the father is.

Recap

Still alive, still here, just haven’t been very talkative. Quick weekend recap, though:

Saturday was a jaunt to the University District Street Fair for a few hours. Quite enjoyable, with a couple very entertaining shows by street performers, two of which are fairly well documented in this photoset from the day.

On the way to the fair I spent some time wandering through Westlake Plaza, tracking down all of the various plaques that make up the Westlake Kids Walk public art project. I’d been walking over them for a few years, now, and it was kind of fun to actually see if I could find them all. I think I did…

Sunday was spent at home, cleaning up the apartment a little bit. As I’d spent much of the past month battling a cold, over-stressed from long days at work, or both, things around here had fallen into a pretty sad state. It’s by no means spic-and-span now, but at least I won’t be completely embarrassed should someone show up — as, if all works out well, my mom will be on Wednesday! She’s in the midst of a trip to see friends down here in the states and has about a twelve hour layover here in Seattle, so she should be taking advantage of my proximity to downtown and the bus lines to rest for a few hours during the latter half of the work day, and then we’ll have some time to visit in the evening before she has to return to the airport. Yay!

Rick stopped by for a few hours yesterday also, and ended up leaving with the first two Harry Potter books. He’s not read them yet, and has finally had enough people tell him that he should that he’d decided it was time. He mentioned this and that he was planning on buying them “at some point” — I decided that this wasn’t good enough, and handed him my copies of the first two to borrow to get him started.

Other than that, not much to report. I really do intend to write a bit more about Star Wars Episode III (though it’s rapidly becoming more of a moot point as more and more people see it for themselves), and I’m sadly behind on sending stuff to Seattlest. My one-to-two posts a week completely disappeared last week, and I need to get back into gear on that — last week, I was a few days behind on my daily reading, and every time I saw something that I thought would make a good post, someone else more on-the-ball than I had beat me to it. I’ve got one post that I’m stalled on, too…last week just wasn’t my best for actually prying anything out of my brain.

Hopefully that’s over with, though. At the very least, there’s some nice bright sunshine outside of my window, it looks to be a good day (I hope work doesn’t muck that up too much), and I finally managed to catch up with my reading last night. If all goes well, I’ll be back on the ball this week.

And with that, the day begins…

Hi there!

It’s raining pretty decently right now, so I ducked into the Convention Center on my way home for lunch. Walking past the lower level shops on my way to the elevator, I spotted a girl in the beauty salon sitting with a pomeranian propped up in her lap.

It was cute, so I grinned. She looked up and saw me, smiled back, and shook one of her dog’s paws at me, to wave “hello!”

May Meetup

Had a good time at the Webloggers Meetup last night. There were a few new faces in attendance, and lots of kids, which was fun — Jon and his wife Joy brought their three kiddos (Jon got a really nice profile shot of me, too), and Eric was there with his really cute little boy.

Some time ago at one of the Jason Webley concerts, a girl had come up to me and told me that I was apparently a doppelganger for her husband. Turns out that she and her husband were there last night, and after the story was told, a few of the people around us agreed that yes, there’s definitely a resemblance. Apparently it’s not quite as close as it was a while ago — I’ve let my hair grow out, and he’s shaved off his face fuzz — but if I’m going to have a twin running around town, I could certainly do worse than Matt May.

Much of the fun of the evening came not from those of us gathered for the Meetup, though, but instead from across the street where the hardcore Star Wars fans were lining up for that evening’s 12:01am first showing of Episode III. We’d all keep our eye on the crowd as we chatted, and occasionally the cry would go up — “Stormtrooper costume!” or “There’s Chewbacca!” or “Jawas!” — and a few of us would grab our cameras and head over to grab a few shots.

Best moment of the night, though?

Walking past the line of Star Wars fans, and having a kid in jeans, sweatshirt, and Darth Vader helmet point at my kilt and laugh.

Amused me to no end, that did…

Uptime? What uptime?

Prairie and I were in the midst of getting ready for dinner and a movie on Friday evening (which consists of Prairie cooking while I make appreciative “yum!” noises as I sniff the air) when suddenly all the power in my apartment went out. Power outage? The building across the street still had power…and so did the hallway in my building, as did my neighbor (who, as always, is quite happy to provide his own soundtrack to my life).

Crud. My apartment had no power. I checked the breaker box in my apartment, but all four breakers looked fine…and besides, with four breakers, any one of them popping would take out part of the apartment, not the whole thing. This wasn’t looking good.

After a bit of panicking, I tracked down the emergency number for the power company and gave them a call. After being reassured that my power hadn’t been turned off — even though I’m a bit behind on that bill, even the power company isn’t grouchy enough to kill someone’s power at 7:30 at night, long after the customer service center has closed for the weekend — we determined that it had to be the master breaker for my apartment.

Circuit breaker box, Alfaretta Apartments, Seattle, WAI wandered out into the hall and started looking for an obvious breaker box. Sure enough, there were some promising-looking boxes at the end of the hallway. Two smaller boxes, one with a single breaker switch, and two larger boxes. Not knowing which was which, I popped open the smaller of the two large boxes.

Circuit breaker box, Alfaretta Apartments, Seattle, WABingo — circuit breakers. Old circuit breakers, to be sure, but circuit breakers. I found the breakers for my apartment (all the way at the very top, of course), found the dead one, and swapped it out with a new breaker from the small pile conveniently left at the bottom of the breaker box. This is pretty old technology, which amuses me — the breakers are about the size of the base of a light bulb, and screw into their sockets. But hey, it works. Plus, there’s these three intimidating-looking things at the bottom of the breaker box — I’ve got no clue what they are, but they look pretty cool.

I was curious, though, about what was in that second, larger box, since all the breakers for the units on my floor were in this box. So, I popped it open — and immediately my eyes went wide and I took a small step backwards. I’m not often faced with “Yikes!” moments, but…

Finally!

Tiger arrives! After far too much stürm und drang, UPS finally managed to get their act together and drop my box from Amazon on my desk this morning.

I got home after work, popped in the disk, and hit the fateful “Erase and Install” button. A few minutes later (probably about 15 or so…I didn’t time it, but it went faster than I expected) I was prompted to reboot, and Tiger was up and running.

OS X 10.4

So far, I’m really liking the upgrade. Things are definitely a bit snappier than 10.3 was (I love the fact that each successive upgrade from Apple is actually faster than the prior version). Dashboard I’m not entirely sold on yet…great eye candy, I’ll see how useful it actually is as I keep playing around. I haven’t had much chance to play with Spotlight so far, as aside from importing my mailboxes, I’m running on a pretty clean slate at the moment, so there’s not a lot for Spotlight to work with yet. That will change with time, of course — and even without using Spotlight’s document-searching capabilities yet, it’s proved to be just as capable of an application launcher as Quicksilver was.

Most of the evening so far has been spent downloading the latest versions of the applications I use frequently and getting my day-to-day workspace set up. I’ve only run into two noticeable snags so far:

  1. The most current version of Microsoft’s keyboard driver (I have a nice keyboard I got for free when I was working on the Microsoft campus — unfortunately, it’s one they don’t make anymore) doesn’t appear to support the extra keys on this keyboard. I’d gotten very used to using the handy shortcut keys for ‘cut’, ‘copy’ and ‘paste’, and they’re now non-functional. A little frustrating, as it’ll take some time for me to re-train my muscle memory away from using them.

  2. No matter how carefully I try to back things up, there’s always something that I realize that I’ve forgotten later on. I’ve grown to accept that over the years — it’s rarely anything I can’t live without if I have to, so I’ve gotten used to this element of Russian Roulette when doing a full Nuke and Pave. Unfortunately, this time the casualty was one I’m definitely going to miss: Photoshop (yes, I’m one of the many people who…ahem…’acquired’ a copy of Photoshop at some point). A definite bummer, as I’m not likely to have the $600 to get my own legal copy anytime soon, and I’ve long since lost track of any sources for less-legal means of acquiring software. Ah, well…so it goes, right?

So all in all, a pretty successful upgrade, and I’ve got lots of little nooks and crannies to play in as I poke around. Yay for new toys!

Update: Well, one more issue, this one potentially a little more serious. For some reason, I don’t seem to be able to send mail through either my Speakeasy account or the account on my own mailserver. Not sure what’s going on here.

I can receive message from both those accounts, and I’ve set up POP access on my gMail account, though, so I can at least send messages through gMail, but I don’t seem to be able to send through my @michaelhanscom.com address, which is a bummer. My mailserver’s been a bit tweaky for a while anyway…maybe it’s time to investigate rebuilding that. Oh, boy is that going to be fun…

UPS, they did it again!

This is getting ridiculous.

Because I’m paranoid after all the issues I’ve been having so far, I just logged into UPS’s tracking site to check on the current state of my shipment.

May 9, 2005 12:39 P.M.: A SECOND DELIVERY CHANGE REQUEST WAS SUBMITTED FOR THIS PACKAGE.;THE RECEIVER REQUESTED THE PACKAGE BE DELIVERED TO AN ALTERNATE ADDRESS
May 9, 2005 6:06 P.M.: AS REQUESTED BY THE CUSTOMER, THE RECEIVER WILL PICKUP AT A UPS FACILITY WITHIN 5 BUSINESS DAYS;THE ADDRESS HAS BEEN CORRECTED. THE DELIVERY HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED

What.

The.

Fuck?!?

I really want to know what’s going on here. That first entry from 12:39pm is from when I talked to UPS, just before making my last post. That 6:06pm entry? Not the faintest clue, but it sure wasn’t me.

Even worse, I can’t do anything about it. If I click on the ‘Delivery Change Request’ link, I get the following message:

A Delivery Change Request cannot currently be performed on this package. For additional information, please call 1-800-811-1652 (Monday-Friday, 7:00 A.M. to Midnight Eastern Time and Saturday 7:30 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. Eastern Time).

And, of course, it’s too late to call the customer service center now.

Looks like the first thing I’m doing tomorrow morning after my alarm goes off is calling UPS and raising holy hell. Oh, joy.

Update: I just got up 2 hours early, at 4am, so I could call the service center as soon as they open at 7am on the East Coast. Just as I was told yesterday, I’ve been assured by a representative (who I did get a name from, this time) that even though it looks to me like the package is set to be held, it is actually on a truck, set for delivery to my workplace today. There’s a new entry on the tracking page…

May 9, 2005 6:38 P.M.: DESTINATION SCAN

…that, though it looks to me like it would mean that the package has been accepted by the UPS facility, I’ve been told actually means that it’s on the truck.

Hmmm. We’ll see.

(Just to be absolutely sure I just called back again, got a different customer service rep — whose name I wrote down — who told me the same thing as the first one did. That’s two different people who have told me that it’s on the truck to be delivered. Keeping my fingers crossed, but that’s at least slightly reassuring.)

For now, though…back to bed for another couple hours.

Update:
