“A Republican lawmaker on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee said Thursday that rocks from the White Cliffs of Dover and the California coastline, as well as silt from rivers tumbling into the ocean, are contributing to high sea levels globally.” No. No, no, no.
Politics
Politically, I’m very liberal — about as far left as one can go without sliding into Libertarianism.
Not my preferred genre, but this is neat: How romance novels are getting a makeover in the Trump era. “MacLean said she realized the book she was writing ‘had 275 pages of a character who probably would have voted for Donald Trump,’ so she deleted the entire manuscript.”
Best comment I’ve seen yet on Ollie North becoming the head of the NRA: “Russian-backed terror group selects noted international arms smuggler as its new President”.
Nice! Making it ever easier to vote is a good, good thing. “The King County Council today approved a measure to offer prepaid postage on ballots for this year’s primary and general elections.”
Best thing I’ve seen from yesterday’s May Day protests in Seattle: a Proud Boy struggling to destroy a sign while being encouraged and offered helpful tips by bystanders. He tried so hard!
Nice: Seattle officials file motion to vacate marijuana convictions. Since it’s legal, and as pot convictions disproportionately affect minorities, this is an excellent step.
Excellent: Not only is Dick’s Sporting Goods no longer selling assault-style weapons, but rather than returning their unsold inventory, they’re destroying and recycling it.
At the #marchforourlives
Since I work from home and I’m not currently a student, participating in #NationalWalkoutDay may seem to be fairly symbolic. But as an uncle to seven niblings, as a husband of a college instructor, and as a friend to many people with children, it doesn’t seem symbolic to me at all. I may be alone, outside of my apartment, but I stand here in unity with all the students and teachers who are participating in today’s walkout, and also because of my belief that all those who are not walking out, whether that’s because they have been threatened with penalties for doing so, or even if they don’t believe this is a useful or necessary protest, should be safe as well. I believe this protest is a good thing, I’m saddened that it’s a necessary thing, I believe that guns do not belong in schools, and I very strongly believe that our country needs to do far more in the way of sensible #guncontrol before more people are hurt or killed.
