Bittorrent trackers?

I hate to have to ask this, but two of the three trackers I knew about appear to be dead (TvTorrents went down a few weeks ago, and btefnet seems to have disappeared over the last week), and the third (novatina) has redesigned, isn’t quite as easy to navigate, and — most egregiously — doesn’t seem to have the last two episodes of Enterprise posted (4-21 “Terra Prime” and 4-22 “These are the Voyages“, respectively). Since they normally go up within 24 hours of broadcast, I’m rather surprised that they don’t seem to be on there yet.

Anybody know of any other good trackers out there? My Google-fu did me no good whatsoever, and as long as Season Four of Enterprise has been a bit more watchable than prior seasons, I’d kind of like to see how it all wraps up.

But it’s funny because they’re gay!

For the past three weeks, I’ve been using bittorrent to watch Grey’s Anatomy, a new medical drama based here in Seattle. So far, it’s struck me as fairly average-but-watchable television — nothing groundbreaking or award winning, but not horrid.

Gray's GeographyMuch of the fun for me (and many others, see Seattlest’s week one, two, and three wrapups; Metroblogging Seattle’s week one, two and three wrapups, for example) has been laughing at the bizarrely twisted geography of this alternate universe Seattle, where the main character can live on Queen Anne, drive north to work along the Alaskan Way Viaduct, and work in a hospital practically underneath the Space Needle that has a picturesque bay window view of the Pike Place Market sign, and yet has South Seattle’s distinct lack of high-rises in any exterior shots.

One thing about this week’s episode really bothered me, though. There were two subplots in the episode that both dealt with essentially the same situation, but they were played in very different ways. On the one hand, we had Meredith dealing with the overly aggressive attentions of a fellow intern, a bike messenger, and a doctor (the last being her primary love interest on the show); on the other, we had George’s discomfort at being under the very appreciative eye of an obviously gay patient.

What got to me was that each situation was dealing with unwanted sexual advances, yet where Meredith’s were played more seriously (complete with Dr. Yum coming to her rescue), George’s scenes with the gay patient were played very much for laughs. I’ve seen this type of double standard a lot, too — if a man harasses a woman it’s a Serious Matter that Must be Dealt With; if a man hits on a man, it’s Comic Relief.

It’s an attitude that has always bugged me. Sure, we’ve come a long way over the years, in that the humor of the situation these days is more often expressed through the straight man’s discomfort, rather than the gay man’s homosexuality, but it still strikes me as just another side of the same coin. It’s still homosexuality being used as a comic foil.

In this particular instance, toward the end of the show the gay character brushed his advances aside as “just flirting”, but he was still doing the same thing that the straight male characters were doing with Meredith — pressing their advances onto an obviously unwilling and discomforted victim. If his lines had been coming from a straight man talking to a straight woman, they would be seen as rude, aggressive, and creepy.

It’s rather sad — though not entirely unexpected — that we still can’t seem to seem to treat homosexuality as anything other than weird, threatening, freakish behavior, something to be laughed at. Maybe the laughter is a little kinder, a little less malicious than it used to be — but it’s still laughter.

Enterprise

Over the past couple weeks, I noticed something interesting during my wanderings through the ‘net. During my near-obsessive investigation into Battlestar Galactica, discussion threads would often end up contrasting the new series to Enterprise, and I kept seeing people openly admitting that the first few seasons of Enterprise were dreck, but then going on to claim that their current season was actually quite watchable.

While reading some of the reports about the current fan-driven campaign to rescue Enterprise from cancellation, the same general comments kept popping up. Then I got into a conversation with a customer at work, and he ended up saying much the same thing.

Unconvinced but intrigued, I decided to see what I could find, and ended up downloading all of the episodes to date of Season Four of Enterprise and watching them over the past few days.

While I wouldn’t exactly say that I’m impressed, I do have to admit that I found this season to be far more bearable than what I had seen during the first season. It’s still by far my least favorite incarnation of Trek (out of TOS, TNG and DS9, at least, I’ve yet to see more than a few random episodes of VOY), but the overall feeling I got was that someone on the Enterprise team got their head out of their ass started actually listening to the fans and tried to turn the show around.

First step in the right direction was spending the first two episodes wrapping up the “temporal cold war” storyline. I thought that was a bad idea when it first popped up, and nothing I’d seen or read since then had convinced me any differently. Now that that’s over and done with, things seem to be improving.

They’ve also spent a few episodes working on the Vulcan culture, trying to explain why they’re presented so differently in this series than they ever have been before. It all came off as a little far-fetched, but at least they’re trying.

The storyline touching on the Eugenics Wars and augmented humans wasn’t bad (though I do wish that they’d used some other scientist as the antagonist — as much as I like Brent Spiner, how old must Soong have been by the time he died?), and it allowed them to finally create an explanation for the differences in appearance between the Klingons of the original series and those we’ve seen ever since The Motion Picture. A pity the second half of that two-part story became so muddled, as the first part was fairly strong, and the general premise is at least bearable (and no worse than some of the other convoluted explanations that have had to be created over the years to explain away various goofs).

So, I’ll admit that they’ve gotten better, and the current season of Enterprise is at least watchable. I still don’t think that there’s any great need for it to continue, though — let it die, and let the Trek universe have a few years to settle and regroup before trying to fire up the Paramount marketing machine yet again.

And please, please, please — no more bad ballads over the opening credits in any future incarnations of Trek. Someone (other than the people sitting through it week after week) really needs to suffer for that.

Battlestar Galactica Season 1…done!

Up until this week, I never got the whole thing with people downloading and watching shows on their computer. I’ve got such a low opinion of the majority of TV shows that I just couldn’t see spending the time and resources on such a project.

Then I got bit by the Battlestar bug.

Suddenly, I can see the appeal. Three days ago, I got curious enough about the currently-running Battlestar Galactica series to ask for help on finding the episodes so that I could watch them. Now, as of just a few minutes ago, I’ve watched all that there is — and, amusingly enough, I’ve actually watched more than has been broadcast here in the US. All thirteen episodes were broadcast in Britain a few months ago, and those are the copies available on the ‘net. So, while the broadcasts on the Sci-Fi Network are only up through episode eight, I’ve just finished off the entire season.

End result? This is really good stuff. They’ve done an incredible job of re-imagining the show, and even better, have managed to keep up an extremely high level of quality throughout the show. Since the broadcasts here in the US still have another five weeks to go before they hit the season finale, I won’t go into any details or spoilers, but those of you who might be watching the show as its broadcast are in for quite a treat.

The DVD of the miniseries is now very high on my “to buy” list, and I’ll be picking up the DVD set for the miniseries as soon as it comes out — while I’ll admit that the quality of the shows I downloaded was far better than I expected, it still won’t compare to full DVD resolution and (I hope) full 5.1 surround. Battlestar may not be getting any ratings points from me during its broadcast run (though they wouldn’t in any case, as I don’t subscribe to cable), but they’ll definitely be getting my money for the DVDs. Hopefully they’re gathering enough eyeballs during their broadcast run to keep the show on the air and at its current level of excellence for a good long time to come.

(Yes, I know that this is a sticky situation legally, and in all honesty, if I did subscribe to cable, I probably would have been quite content watching the episodes as they broadcast and contributing to the ratings. However, I continue to hold fast to my belief that cable television is, on the whole, an incredible waste of money. As stated above, though, once the DVD sets are available, they’re going into my collection.)

Okay. So.

Theoretically speaking…

Suppose there was a certain science fiction television show that I was interested in watching (ahem). Also suppose that not only do I not presently subscribe to cable, but I have no intention of doing so, as the amount of time I’d spend watching television in no way justifies the cost.

Now, in theory, it’s supposed to be possible for me to go out onto the ‘net somewhere to find digitized copies of the episodes that I could download and then watch on my computer.

How in the world would I go about this? Where would I look?

Would I need any special software (Mac OS X software, please)?

Any and all advice, hints, or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Battlestar Galactica Episode 1

This is incredibly cool: The Sci-Fi Channel has posted the first episode of Battlestar Galactica season one (not the miniseries that’s currently available on DVD, but the currently-running TV series) on their website, free, uncut, and without commercials.

Just go to the Battlestar Galactica site and click on the banner at the top of the page. You’ll need RealPlayer, unfortunately, but that’s the only downside I can see.

I know what I’m watching when I get home from work tonight.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Well, it’s over.

A year and a half ago, I started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. At the time, I’d never seen any of the show — though I had rather mercilessly teased my dad about being a fan. As of tonight, nineteen months and a lot of DVDs later, I’ve seen every episode, from Buffy first arriving in Sunnydale to her final look forward into a new, changed world.

Damn, but that’s a good show, and I’m glad I overcame my initial trepidation and decided to give it a shot.

It’s good to know that every so often, there actually is a good show on television. I’m impressed.

My personal top three episodes, just off the top of my head, in reverse order (there really should be a way to make an ordered list in HTML that counts down rather than up…but anyway):

TV-B-Gone

Number one with a bullet on my Christmas wish list this year: TV-B-Gone, a universal remote control with one button, and one function — to turn off any television.

From Wired’s writeup:

Altman’s key-chain fob was a TV-B-Gone, a new universal remote that turns off almost any television. The device, which looks like an automobile remote, has just one button. When activated, it spends over a minute flashing out 209 different codes to turn off televisions, the most popular brands first.

For Altman, founder of Silicon Valley data-storage maker 3ware, the TV-B-Gone is all about freeing people from the attention-sapping hold of omnipresent television programming. The device is also providing hours of entertainment for its inventor.

I am so in favor of anything that works on breaking the stranglehold TV has on most people. I’m not militantly anti-TV — of late, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying watching Buffy, Angel, and (thanks to my parents) the West Wing thanks to the DVD releases of each of those shows.

But for too many people, TV takes over their lives. I can fall prey to this too — when I’m in an environment where a TV is on and in my line of vision, it’s difficult not to get sucked in. I’ve often been out with friends to grab a bite at some restaurant that feels the need to scatter TVs around the building, and it always makes it more difficult to carry on a converstion, as there is the constant background distraction.

One of these little gizmos in my pocket would make me a much happier person.

Jon Stewart on Crossfire

I was going to put up a lot of links to discussion about Jon Stewart’s recent appearance on Crossfire — but then Safari crashed (it’s rare, but not unheard of) and I lost all the tabs I had open.

However, on the off chance you haven’t heard about or seen this yet, you really should watch the video.

We need more people like Stewart on the airwaves.

Once More, With Feeling

As I’ve mentioned on here every so often, I’ve been working my way through the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series from beginning to end by renting the DVDs from NetFlix. I’m up to season six now (which means I’m going to have to take a break pretty soon, as season seven isn’t out for a little while yet), and I’m still thoroughly enjoying the show.

Season four had what is so far my all-time favorite episode — ‘Hush‘ — but last night I watched what’s now a very close second: ‘Once More, With Feeling‘.

In deference to friends who are also working their way through Buffy for the first time, the rest of these ramblings is behind the cut… Now, I’d heard about ‘Once More With Feeling’ (a.k.a. “Buffy — The Musical”) before hand, but I knew nothing about it beyond that it was a musical episode, so I was really looking forward to seeing it. I didn’t know how they were going to present it (music and spoken word, like a true musical; purely music, operetta-style; possibly something else), or how they were going to make it work within the confines of the show — though, admittedly, with a show like Buffy it’s easy enough to explain nearly anything away with a little creative work.

I knew I was going to be in for a treat when the show opened to a widescreen ratio and old movie style credits. Obviously they weren’t going to go about this halfway! I spent the rest of the next hour with a goofy grin on my face, often laughing out loud as the trademark wordplay worked its way into the songs.

Musically, while it’s not perfect — the cast are actors, after all, and not professional singers (though Anthony Stewart Head and Amber Benson both do quite well) — it is a lot of fun, with styles bouncing all over the place, from soft-shoe jazz to rock power ballads, and even a few reprises of earlier themes popping up later on in the show. Whedon is obviously a fan of musicals, and that shows throughout the show, not just in the music, but also in his framing of the shots and the choreography of the dances.

While it’s definitely something that could only be done as a one-off concept episode, I had a blast with it. Enough of a blast that when I found out that the soundtrack is on iTMS, it was downloading to my computer just a few moments later. My favorite track from the show? Definitely Spike’s showcase number, Rest in Peace. Not only does it do a wonderful job of expressing Spike’s frustration in his non-relationship with Buffy, but it’s a fun power rock pseudo-ballad, and James Marsters does a credible job with it (even if his accent does slip a bit from time to time).

While ‘Hush’ still takes the prize as my all-time favorite episode that I’ve seen so far, ‘Once More With Feeling’ is a very, very close second. If only there were more television shows like this, I might actually bother to watch TV more often.
