New iMac On the Way…

This entry was published at least two years ago (originally posted on October 20, 2009). Since that time the information may have become outdated or my beliefs may have changed (in general, assume a more open and liberal current viewpoint). A fuller disclaimer is available.

I’ve been planning on upgrading my desktop for a while now, and almost ordered an iMac a few months ago. I’m so glad I waited for the next generation of iMacs to be released, though! They were released this morning, and mine is ordered and on its way!

My final configuration:

  • 27″ screen
  • 3.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
  • 4GB RAM
  • ATI Raedon HD 4850 w/512 MB RAM
  • 1TB Hard drive
  • 8x dual-layer SuperDrive (CD/DVD)
  • Full (wired) keyboard with 10-key pad
  • Magic Mouse
  • iWork ’09 Preinstalled
  • AppleCare

It should be here sometime next week. Exciting!

  1. Jealousy alert here too :)

I’m just curious why you maxed out the Core 2 Duo option instead of going for the default quad-core.

For what I know, the i5-750 is faster than the E8600, besides being more Snow Leopard future-proof with four cores – and that iMac is even slightly cheaper.

  2. I had a rough target budget of $2000 to work with, and starting with the high-end Core Duo option gave me an extra $400 (no typo, the educational discount saved me $100) to play with for tweaking and customizing. Plus, since I don’t do much really processor-intensive work (video, etc.), I figured the Duo would be “fast enough” — I’m not the kind of user who’s really likely to take advantage of the quad-core chip, so I decided to sacrifice the “geek cred” on this buy. :)

Oh — and the quad-core wouldn’t ship until sometime in November. I just this morning got the shipping notice for my iMac, it’s leaving Shanghai today and should be on my desk by next Wednesday!

  3. I ordered one and it’s supposed to be tomorrow, but it said it left Shanghai on the 23rd, but today an update said it’s “In Transit” in Shanghai. Now, is this a mess up on Fed Ex’s part? I’m not sure. I just hope mine arrives tomorrow, too. :)
