    • Metadata is a good thing While I've played with it a bit, I don't see myself becoming a big user of the iTunes Music Store for one very simple reason — their metadata doesn't meet my standards.

    • Breaking news: something happened Now, this breaking news. Something has reportedly happened. Details are sketchy, and we really don't have any idea of what it might be, but let's show these impressive aerial shots from our helicopter. Now let's go to our correspondent in the field to tell us that he doesn't know anything. Bob?
    • A reminder You are an arteest, and no longer have time for things like cooking and grocery shopping and laundry. Start demanding favors and treats from friends and loved ones now. That way they'll be fully acclimated to the new you once November rolls around.

    • Wild phlebotomists loose in the building! Downsides to having a tattoo barely a year old -- from what I understand, I can't give blood for another year. I'm sure they'll be fine, though, they had willing volunteers in the chairs already.
    • For a wonderfully surreal time ...pop in the new Monty Python and the Holy Grail DVD, set the audio track to French (or maybe just mute it if you actually speak French), and turn on the 'subtitles for people who hate the film.'

    • McCain Concedes When I saw this bit of news earlier today, I had the same thought that Daily Kos does here: he's throwing in the towel. Since my vote went to Obama, I can't say that I'm disappointed...but how must his campaign staffers, who still have twelve days to go before the election, feel about this?

    • Pushing Daisies: Candy-Coated Family Friendly? Pushing Daisies is one of our favorite shows on TV right now -- wonderfully quirky, and often feels to me like what might have happened if _Edward Scissorhands_-era Tim Burton had gone into television. The Disney Weblog has been doing weekly wrapups, and something about this week's review got under my skin a little bit.

    • Two Towers protest This just might be the single stupidest thing I've seen in a very long time. A group of people have put up a website protesting the title of the next Lord of the Rings movie, 'The Two Towers', because, 'The name of this movie will undoubtedly cause a return of the emotions felt on Sept 11th which left so many people in the nation feeling stunned and in a state of shock.'

There are flags and yellow ribbons and posters and every media outlet is beating the war drum and even sensible people can hear nothing else. • Put It In the Microphone Just got Kickshaw's latest CD, 'Put It In the Microphone' in the mail today.
    • Mayday! Mayday! The worst thing about all this is that it's not just my own site. If it were only my own personal playground, than while it would certainly be frustrating and aggravating, at least that way I would only be causing issues for me. However, since I have been hosting the sites for both my family and a friend, I've now managed to knock them offline too. Bleah. Not a good situation.

    • No wonder I’m a wimp! People with natural red hair need about 20 percent more anesthesia than people with other hair colors, they told a meeting of anesthesiologists. The unexpected finding not only suggests that redheads are more sensitive to pain, but offers insights into how anesthesia works in people.

    • Royce and me I thought I'd share this rare, candid snapshot of Royce and I outside my old apartment in Anchorage.
    • Ascii-me! Royce sent me an ASCII rendering of my face. Rock on.

    • 📚 forty-two of 2020: Close Encounters of the Third Kind by Steven Spielberg ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A pretty straightforward translation of the story from screen to page, but as it’s a classic of 80s optimistic sci-fi, that’s not a bad thing. Really has me wanting to rewatch the film now.

    • Different companies, different standards I just spent a few minutes chatting with a gentleman sporting a denim Utilikilt, one of seven that he owns (one for every day of the week). Unfortunately, while the company I'm working at obviously has no problem with kilts in the workplace, the company I work for is far more strict with their dress code.
    • Analysis saying Kerry won? I'm not entirely caught up with the post-debate threads that made it into my newsreader last night and this morning, but according to a couple posts from Kos last night, I may have been too pessimistic in my debate wrap-up — people seem to be giving Kerry a definite win.

    • Dammit Well, I managed to break my server. Attempting to log in to MovableType results in long strings of errors — apparently perl is completely hosed.

    • Who’s gonna swerve first? It's not 'conspiracy theory,' as some of my readers have accused me, to suggest that Bush may not actually want to spend the lives of Americans to invade Iraq. It is quite possible -- no matter how evil or misguided you believe Bush to be -- that he would rather not waste a few hundred or thousand American lives, or a few hundred thousand Iraqi lives, on pipelines and additional security against nuclear/chemical/germ threat.
    • Microsoft switchers – oops! Unfortunately, since Microsoft (apparently) couldn't find any customers that had actually made the switch from the Mac to Windows, and were happy about it, and willing to talk about it — they had to combine a hired freelance writer's story with stock photography.
