Downtime, upgrades, moving to Mars

Grrrr…frikkin’ bills. I dunno why everybody’s so picky about wanting their money on time.

Um…yeah. If you haven’t guessed, the reason for the recent downtime was nothing more than my own stupidity when it comes to billpaying. Sorry about that.

However, bills are paid, and everything’s back up and running again. I took advantage of the server going up and down to install the 10.0.1 update to Mac OS X that hit the ‘net today…and, have to admit, this is nice. Not sure what might be there as far as new features, but it’s a heck of a lot faster. Woohoo!

Anyway, not much going on at the moment — since Studio 99 switched me to Saturdays, I’m not dj’ing tonight…so actually have a night to relax. Went out and rented Mission To Mars and Red Planet to watch tonight. Going off to Mars this evening…see y’all when I get back!

Renee…yum…

Not much big going on today — other than that I was the only person in my close circle of friends who went to work today. Loren just got back from his job working on an oil rig for one of the slope companies, and Rick, Erika, and Miranda were all here at home sick. Bleah. I dunno who got the better end of the deal…probably me, though.

It was, however, something of a Renee Zellweger day for me — picked up two movies with her in it. Not really setting out to do that, just that they both got released today.

First off is Empire Records, a wonderfully silly little story of a bunch of kids working in a record store. Mark and Lucas are hilarious, the eye candy is nice, the script is fun, and a lot of the music is great. Unfortunately, the soundtrack for the film only featured music by today’s “hot” bands, so all the really good music is only in the movie…but at least it’s there.

The other I picked up is one that I consider to be one of the best, if not the single best movie to come out in 2000 — Nurse Betty. While it’s definitely a (very) black comedy, it’s one of the few I’ve found that manages to be a black comedy while still retaining a real heart of gold at the center and doesn’t just descend into full-out nihilistic cynicism — which a lot of black comedies do, much as I enjoy them. When I saw this film in the theater, I literally walked out of the film with a huge grin on my face — not because of the dark humor in the film (though I did enjoy that), but by the wonderful (and, dare I say it, sweet) ending that wrapped it all up. I really think it’s an absolute treasure of a film, and am all sorts of happy to have it.

In case you haven’t seen it, Nurse Betty is the story of Betty, a sweet and incredibly naive housewife (Renee Zellweger) who quite literally mentally breaks down when she witnesses the murder of her husband by a couple of con men (Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock). She retreats into a world where she is in love with the character of a doctor on “A Reason to Love,” the soap opera she watches daily, and sets off to drive to Hollywood to meet her long-lost lover. Now, read that last sentence carefully — she’s not in love with the actor who plays the doctor (Greg Kinnear) — she’s in love with the doctor himself. Meanwhile, chasing her on her road trip are the two con men, who want something her husband had put in the trunk of the car she’s driving. There’s a lot more to the film than that simple summary can do justice to, and the cast plays it to perfection — there is a scene where Betty comes back to her senses and realizes what has been happenig which is just heartrending, to the point where it’s almost painful to watch as the real world comes crashing back in to her. However, with all that, as I said, I walked out of the theater with a huge grin on my face, marvelling at the work I’d just watched. Well worth finding, in my opinion.

So, that’s it for today….

Been a busy weekend

Been going pretty strong all weekend long, so this is my first update for the past few days. I’m sure that there are just multitudes of people anxiously awaiting the next episode in my babble here, though, so I figured I’d try to get something up.

Right.

Anyway.

I’m rapidly discovering just how amazingly long Fridays are going to be for me for the foreseeable future — in essence, I’ve got a gauranteed minimum of 22 hours up every Friday. As my shift at GCI starts at 8am and I am hardly a morning person, my alarm starts going off at 6am. I work my shift at GCI, get off work at 4, get home, get some food, change, and get myself to the club around 7/7:30pm. The club doesn’t close until 3am, so I’m not likely to get to bed until around 4am — 22 hours. Uff-da.

However, it’s not something I’m going to give up…been anxious to get back into DJ’ing, and a little sleeplessness is a relatively small price to pay in my book.

Friday night went pretty decently — Samurai showed up to guest again, so he and I traded off through the night. We brought attendance up a few more — I think it was somewhere between 130 and 150 people all told — hopefully that number will just keep growing as things go on. Looking good so far, though.

Relaxation, upgrades – and furrets!

Well, ended up having a very nice weekend. I’m afraid I did oversleep on Saturday — I was supposed to be at work at Suncoast at 10am, and didn’t wake up until sometime after noon — but they were kind enough to understand why. Not only did they let me take the rest of the day off, but they hadn’t scheduled me for Sunday…and they’ll be sure not to schedule me before 1pm on Saturdays from now on, so I’ll be able to get sleep after DJ’ing on Friday nights! Rock on.

I ended up spending most of the weekend working with my computers. I’ve been running this webserver off the Public Beta of Mac OS X since the beta was released, and Saturday was (finally) the official release date of the full retail version of OS X. Ran down to the local CompUSA and picked it up, came home, and installed it first on my main work machine. Everything went smoothly there, so I bit the bullet, backed up the website, and upgraded the webserver.

Luckly, everything went smoothly there, too — for the most part. There have been some under-the-hood changes between the Public Beta and the Retail release that took me by surprise and required some tweaking to get the webserver up and running correctly again (for the tech geeks out there, the Apache webserver, which had been named apache under the PB, is now named the standard httpd again, the various configuration files have been moved and renamed, and the logfile directory is moved), but I was able to find and tweak everything relatively quickly. I was able to bring the webserver down, completely reformat it, install OS X, put the website back, and find all the changes to get the website back up and running correctly in a grand total of three hours — I don’t think that’s too bad at all.

Then, since I was upgrading things anyway, I checked and found a new version of the software I use for my Messageboard/Guestbook, and got that installed and configured. Unfortunately, the new version doesn’t read the threads from the previous version, so things are looking a little sparse in there…but that’s a relatively minor annoyance in the grand scheme of things.

The final big news for the weekend — furrets! :) Miranda had two ferrets that, unfortunately, she isn’t able to give as much attention as she’d like anymore, as she just had a beautiful little girl three months ago. Babies being the wonderful, but admittedly time-consuming creatures they are, she needed to find a good home for her ferrets. I gave it some thought, and figured that I could do that…besides, this way, she can have visitation rights whenever she wants. So, the newest additions to the family here at the apartment are Niko and Ash (otherwise lovingly known as Nikkerbokker and Assmaster). This should be a lot of fun — while my family has almost always had pets (usually cats), I realized a bit ago that I’d never had pets of my own — they’ve always either been my mom’s or my brother’s — so, for the first time, I’ve got little ones of my own. All sorts of cool.

However, it’s now Monday morning, and time to go jump in the shower and get back to the normal workaday week. Off and running like a herd of turtles….

First night at Studio 99

I had so much fun tonight! I’m up way, way too late (it’s 4:28 AM as I type this), and work is going to suck tomorrow (I open…10am…really shouldn’t be posting this right now), but it was worth it.

I was a little nervous going in to this — while I used to have a pretty decent fan base around town, it’s been a while since I’ve done anything — somewhere around a year and a half or so since the Eclipse closed down. Plus, in that time, most of my money has been going towards living, bills, and movies, so I haven’t been picking up a lot of new music lately. So, I wasn’t entirely sure how the night was going to go.

I really shouldn’t have worried.

I got there and got set up, and Samurai showed up not long afterwards to set up his turntables. We ended up switching off over the night — I took the first couple hours from 8-10, he took about an hour from 10-11, then I went from 11-12, he went on again from 12-1:30, and I took over again from 1:30-3.

While we don’t have a definite headcount for the night, we’re guestimating somewhere between 75-100 people…maybe a bit more. While that doesn’t sound like a whole lot, I’m actually quite impressed — considering our radio ads didn’t hit the air until Thursday, and most people just found out through word-of-mouth, it was a pretty good crowd. Besides, I’ve seen clubs who were happy to break into the double-digits on opening night, so this was really nice.

Everybody who was there seemed to be enjoying the night…I saw a few faces I hadn’t seen in a while, and apparently there was a lot of good word going around both about the place and about the DJ’ing — woohoo! We ran out of flyers, too — I’m hoping to have more printed up to distribute tomorrow (Saturday), but if that can’t happen I’ll definitely be getting them done early in the week.

Okay, that’s all the babble I can squeeze out of my overloaded little brain for tonight…time to see if I can get at least a few hours sleep before work tomorrow.

Okay, so I’m a junkie

Hi. My name is Woody, and I’m a DVD-aholic.

Hi, Woody!

Yeah, so…I went through and compared my actual DVD collection with the database program that keeps track of them all and provides the DVD listing that I have here on my website. Turns out I had a few of my roomie’s listed in there that I needed to delete…but I also had a few of my own that I hadn’t put in there. End result?

I passed the 300 mark a week or two ago, it seems….I now have a total of 308 DVD’s.

Boy, am I glad I’ve got a decent paying job!

Good tunes

While I grew up listening to an incredibly wide range of music thanks to my parents, I’ve never really been much into country. My tastes always ran to the alternative, industrial, and for the past few years I’ve focused mainly on electronica, from deep trance and house to dance remixes of more poppy stuff, as long as it’s fun to dance to and well constructed.

However, over the past few years, I’ve been spending much of my time around women who listened to a fair amount of country…and I suppose that can only last so long before it really starts to sink in. It helps that much of what I grew up with was the music that today’s country grew out of — rock and roll, blues, r&b (back when r&b actually meant rhythm and blues) — all that good old stuff. So, more and more lately, I find myself keeping the car radio more on 104.1 and 107.5, the two country stations in town. Thanks to them, I’ve just stumbled upon an absolutely incredible band — Trick Pony.

Trick Pony’s currently got a single called ‘Pour Me’ that, in my mind, at least, absolutely demands to be cranked up to the threshold of pain every time it comes on the radio. Well, their album just hit the stores this week, I’m listening to it now — and for the first time in my life, I really wish this band was coming to Anchorage soon so I could see their show. Just a great album, pretty much solidly upbeat all the way through so far, and from what I’ve read on the ‘net, these three put on an absolutely incredible live show.

So, if you’re into country at all, or even just into really damn good music, pick this one up. Well worth it.

I’m heading out tonight (hence why Ben-Hur isn’t going in the DVD player right now). The reason my residency at Studio 99 doesn’t officially kick in until next week is because they already had tonight rented out — but it sounds like it should be a fun deal to go to, so I’m going to stop by that for a while.

Polar Productions in association with Dance Nation (Tuesdays on KRUA 88.1FM from 10pm-1am) presents an all-ages dance event: R E V E R B. DJ Panda, Michael Kalman, DJ Jasper, Planet Lush, Scott Lappi and a special guest DJ will be spinning at Studio 99 from 8pm-3am tonight. $10 at the door, $8 with a canned food donation — all cans to benefit the Food Bank of Alaska.

It is way too early

On the one hand, I really hate the fact that my alarm is going off at 6 am every day so I can get myself moving in time to be at work at 8 am this week for training on the new job. On the other hand…hey, I’m doing it! Making it to work on time every day, and putting in a full 8 hours each day…would probably blow the doors off some of the people back at TimeFrame, where I was so burnt out on the place that I was averaging closer to 30 hours a week rather than the 40 I should have been.

Amazing the differences that can appear when you’ve got a job that you actually enjoy, huh?

And, as a major benefit — between the pay raise and getting my full 40 hours a week, I figure I should start taking home about an extra $600 a month or so!

Picked up what looks to be a fascinating little book yesterday — The Celluloid Closet, by Vito Russo. It’s an examination of the portrayal of homosexuality in movies throughout the history of Hollywood — looks to be fascinating stuff. I had seen the documentary that had been based on this work (the movie is also called The Celluloid Closet), and thought it was a hilarious and fascinating film, so finding the original literary work — on sale for a whopping $2.99, no less — was a nice little treat yesterday. Should be quite the interesting read.

In any case, it’s about time for me to be heading off into the wide wierd world….

It’s official!

As of 10:30am today, after cleaning all my personal material off of the machines, I turned in my resignation at TimeFrame. I start work at GCI‘s NOC as a Service Repair Coordinator Monday morning at 9am. Finally — something new to do! I’m really stoked about this…will be nice to get some experience in something other than making copies. :D

Career changes

Well, it looks like the application I put in at CNTS has paid off. I got a call right at the end of work today letting me know that they’ve got a position for me — the catch being that I need to let them know tomorrow if I can start on Monday. Wow…not what I had planned on, I’d been hoping to give at least 1 if not 2 weeks notice at my current job — but, at the same time, I’ve been itching to get out of TimeFrame for a while now, and this looks like far too good an opportunity to pass up.

So, it looks like tomorrow I’ll give notice to TimeFrame that it’s my last day, and come Monday I’ll start working at GCI! The best part about this — when I decided to go for another job, I just wanted to make sure that I’d get at least $10 an hour. I’m currently making $13.50, and didn’t want to go much lower than that, just so I could make sure I could still pay all my bills and such. This position — $14.70/hr! I was prepared to take a pay cut doing this, and it looks like I’m actually going to get a $1.20/hr raise out of the deal? How can I not go for it?

So, I’m currently more or less bouncing off the walls about this…admittedly, it’ll make work really interesting tomorrow, but hey, these things happen, and I think in the long run this will be much better for me. Woohoo!
