    • Breakthrough infection odds: 1 in 5,000 or better. In Seattle on an average recent day, about one out of every one million vaccinated residents have been admitted to a hospital with Covid symptoms. That risk is so close to zero that the human mind can’t easily process it.

    • It: Chapter Two: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Not bad, but not nearly as strong as the first. Good character building and creepy scares became too much CGI and too many jump scares. In the end, the creepyness of part one becomes just another collection of loud noises and CG monsters in part two.
    • Book forty-nine of 2019: Star Trek: The Official Guide to the Animated Series, by Aaron Harvey and Rich Schepis. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ TAS finally gets its behind-the-scenes episode-by-episode review. Artwork, trivia, and memories from those involved make this a must for TAS fans. 🖖

Today’s the #StarTrek50 anniversary — 50 years since The Man Trap, the first broadcasted episode hit the air — and while I wasn’t around for that, Star Trek has been part of my life for longer than I can remember. • I’m going to be a little sad when Prairie’s vacation is done. I could get used to coming home to cocktails on the patio!
  • 2014
    • Yum! Sausages, ginger carrots, garlic Parmesan mashed potatoes, fresh corn, and homemade rosemary bread. I am so spoiled when Prairie’s on vacation and decides to spend a day cooking! (And the rest of the time too, really.)
    • Definitely think I’ve hit maximum beard for me; thanks to my curls, the right side of my face is distinctly fluffier than the left. Time to trim!

    • Thoughts on the Fall 2009 TV Lineup I just peeked at TV Guide's Fall 2009 TV lineup to see what Prairie and I might be interested in using to rot our brains with in the evenings. Most of the week looks doable, with only a few potential conflicts.

    • More Katrina Incompetence On August 27th, President Bush declared a State of Emergency in Louisiana due to the then-incoming Hurricane Katrina. Sounds like a good thing, and possibly one of the few things done right in this whole mess, right? Well...not quite.

    • New toys to play with Y'know, it's really hard to get anything useful done when I run across all these nifty new toys to play with.
    • Flickr This is a test post from , a fancy photo sharing thing.
    • Oh, this was just icky Last night, as part of my preparations for going on vacation for a week, I worked on straightening up the apartment a bit, primarily by utilizing the time-honored method of picking up stacks of old mail and papers, dumping them in garbage bags, and taking them out to the dumpster. This morning, while in the shower, I suddenly realized that I hadn't set my AdSense profit check from Google aside into a separate pile when I got it.

    • Updated iPods and iMacs Oh, and just in case you've been considering upgrading or switching, Apple announced bigger iPods and faster iMacs this morning.
    • The Doctor is in! Real life imitates art.
    • Working out the bugs Anyway, I'm quite gratified that the design seems to be fairly well received, and that any bugs that have been mentioned so far are actually fairly minor. It's about time I started exploring different ideas, and you all are helping me iron things out a lot. I'll buy you a drink next time you're in town. :)
    • Two girls in my bed! You will notice, however, that I am not in my bed. ;)

    • Dinner time…pulled pork, baked potatoes, corn, and cucumbers and tomatoes fresh picked from Prairie’s garden. Eaten on the patio, of course, with a rose also from Prairie’s garden.

    • Old Money While we were in Woodland with Prairie's dad and grandpa, Prairie took a few minutes to poke around the house and collect some old glassware to bring home. While she was exploring, she found some fun old currency, some of which we recognized, some of which we didn't. I've scanned them in and done a little Wikipedia research, and here's what we came up with.

    • A little ray of sunshine While it's never a _happy_ thing to see one of Seattle's many homeless inhabitants laboring to push a shopping cart filled to overflowing with what few items they've been able to claim for themselves up one of our many hills, I have to admit it's hard not to grin when...

    • Personality bits and pieces I've often semi-seriously joked that one of the things I'm proudest of in my life is narrowly avoiding becoming the über-sterotypical basement-dwelling pathologically introverted 'geek' by discovering at one point that not only did I actually have a personality, but that it was apparently a rather pleasant one. This ended up putting me in the rather rare position of being a geek who can generally actually cope fairly effectively with the real world.

    • Funny or frightening? Both? Amazon.com customers comment on the American Film Institute's top 20 films of the 20th century. Kind of explains why such tripe becomes so popular these days, and the movies worth seeing are so hard to find (if they even get made).

    • Two digits, thousands of votes Issue: Manipulation technique found in the Diebold central tabulator -- 1,000 of these systems are in place, and they count up to two million votes at a time. By entering a 2-digit code in a hidden location, a second set of votes is created. This set of votes can be changed, so that it no longer matches the correct votes. The voting system will then read the totals from the bogus vote set.

    • Bumbershoot '03: Mon, Sep 1 Finally, we made it to the end — day four of Bumbershoot is over and done with. After this post, no more Bumbershoot babbling until sometime next year!

    • Book forty of 2016: We’ll Always Have Parrots, by Donna Andrews. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
    • Yeah…I’m that guy who goes to the local brewery storefront and orders a ginger ale. :) (244/366)

    • Upheaval The move is in progress -- tons of boxes filled with crap floating from one apartment to the other, and all sorts of unfun disarray and nastiness. Ugh. Moving's stressful enough when it's anticipated and planned, but having to suddenly dive full-force into it with no advance notice is _horrendous_.

    • No Cameras at Bumbershoot? According to the Bumbershoot website, 'Cameras are not allowed at Bumbershoot—please leave them at home.' Anyone out there have any more info? What's the deal here? And how are they going to be enforcing it?

    • Kevin and Noah My little brother and my one-month old nephew.
    • I’m everywhere! With the addition of the new Mac OS X release of Skype, there are now a veritable plethora of ways to get ahold of me online, should anyone be so inclined.
    • G5 iMac The new G5-based iMac is up on Apple's site. Haven't spent a ton of time on the site, yet, but first impressions are that it's a damn impressive piece of engineering, packing all that into such a tiny little space.

    • Yet another trick in place Alrighty then -- more goodies are in place! To go with the (re-)addition of the smiley hack, I've combined a couple other ideas to really enhance the comment postings here.

    • Temptation! Seeing as how I just landed this position with Xerox/Andersen, and that I know they'd like me to commit to at least a year, do I stay with the safe bet with good future opportunities? Or do I chase a dream to see if I can get a spot on the cruise ships?

    • Year 50 Day 120 It's always a little jarring to see the hotel this empty and undecorated.

    • 📚 thirty-four of 2020: Power Hungry by Howard Weinstein ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #startrek #tng 🖖 Much better than the last one. While the environmental themes are pretty heavy-handed, it’s nice to find a Trek novel where everything isn’t wrapped up neatly with a bow by the end.

    • And Summer vacation part two (four nights with friends at a lake house on Lake Coeur d’Alene in Idaho) is done! Had to make it a working vacation, but when not being responsible, I drove a boat, rode a rainbow floaty unicorn, swam in a lake, and had a grand time!

    • Ahhh, yes. Now that looks like home.
    • Batman enjoyed Alaska, but he’s looking forward to being back home, too.
    • Batman enjoyed his Alaska trip, too. Here he is with Sleeping Lady/Mt. Susitna in the background.
    • This morning’s final Alaska selfie. Theoretically, Denali is in the background, but the sun was in our eyes and I didn’t get my phone aimed right.
    • One last local indulgence. Mmmmmm…Rudolph!
    • Realized we were right by the Farmer’s Market. Fresh made cinnamon rolls are a great morning treat. :)

    • New glasses are on the way So I've got new eyeglasses on the way. Rimless, fairly small and rectangular, with very thin silver bows, and they come with a set of clip-on shades that match the shape of the lenses exactly. Prairie assures me that they look incredibly good and nearly disappear from my face, not nearly as dominating as my current pair.
    • Rent As mentioned briefly last week, Saturday's evening entertainment was wandering down a couple blocks to the Paramount Theatre to see Rent.

    • Feelin' hot! Hot! Hot! 'I see,' I said, and studied her for a moment. 'We'll just have to leave that to mystery then, won't we?'
    • Bumbershoot tips Kellan asked if I had any tips for the rest of the Bumbershoot weekend. My response kept getting longer and longer, so I figured I might as well toss it up as a post of its own, rather than hiding it in the comment thread.

    • No, really, it’s innocent! When my 12 year old daughter asked for this for her birthday, I kind of wondered if she was too old for it, but she seems to LOVE it. Her friends love it too! They play for hours in her bedroom with this great toy. They really seem to like the special effects it offers (the sound effects and vibrating). My oldest daughter (17) really likes it too! I reccomend this for all children.
    • Smileys are back! I had this hack installed a while ago, and had managed to kill it -- well, it's back! Now, when I or anyone posting a comment types in a 'smiley' code (for instance, ':)') it will be replaced by the corresponding 'smiley' (in this case, ':)').
    • Suddenly cab drivers seem sane As the city bus drove down the street, two men in the back got into a fight. Concerned for the safety of himself and his other passengers, the driver pulled over to the side of the road and had everyone -- including the two men in the altercation -- evacuate the bus. Everyone did, save one person.

    • Suicide isn’t painless This event has been garnering national media attention not because of the suicide attempt itself, but because of the depressingly horrendous way that people here reacted to it.
    • Kev, drama queens, and Bumbershoot First things first -- my bro was in town! On his way north he stopped off in Seattle for a couple days, and we got to hang out and visit Saturday and Sunday evenings.
