Same as before, ten songs that iTunes chooses at random:

  • Naughty by Nature, ‘Every Day All Day‘, off of Naughty by Nature: One of the weaker tracks off of what’s overall a very good 80’s hip-hop album. I’ve never been a huge hip-hop fan, but generally when I am, it’s 80’s era stuff, and most of Naughty by Nature’s stuff was a lot of fun.

  • Rent Cast, ‘Tune Up #3’, off of Rent: One of the brief inter-song mini pieces from the Broadway musical. Works well in context, but these short bits are rather odd when mixed in with everything else in my collection.

  • Rent Cast, ‘Today 4 U’, off of Rent: Another odd coincidence with random selections. Angel’s introduction song, Rent’s single foray into a pseudo-techno piece. Again, one that works well in context, but it doesn’t really stand well on its own (it’s somewhat annoying on its own, to tell the truth).

  • Linda Perry and Grace Slick, ‘Knock Me Out’, off of The Crow: City of Angels: A slower, somewhat atmospheric song. Not bad background music in a mix, but it doesn’t really stand out to me one way or another. Of course, the movie it comes from is pretty hideous (sad to say, I’ve seen all of the Crow films to date, and the first one is by far the only one worth paying attention to).

  • James Horner, London Symphony Orchestra, Mel Gibson & Sophie Marceau, ‘Not Every Man Really Lives‘, off of More Music from Braveheart: A little bit of dialogue from the movie leading into some of James Horner’s wonderful soundtrack. Every time I hear some of the music from Braveheart it makes me want to give the movie another watch.

  • Nine Inch Nails, ‘Down In It (Shred)’, off of Down In It: One of the remixes of Trent’s early singles. At this stage, he hadn’t become nearly as experimental as he did later on, so there’s really very little to tell the various mixes of Down In It apart from one another. Still, not a bad little song in itself (even if he has openly admitted that he was essentially ripping off Skinny Puppy‘s’Dig It‘ when he did this track).

  • Eddy Grant, ‘Electric Avenue (Hot Tracks)’, off of The Edge Level 2: A DJ-exclusive remix from the Hot Tracks remix service, this is from one of their 80’s retro discs. “We gonna walk down to Electric Avenue, and then we’ll take it higher….”

  • The Weavers, ‘Goodnight, Irene‘, off of The Best of the Decca Years: I got this album mainly because of Wimoweh, and then figured I’d see what all else they’d done. It falls right in line with much of the music I heard growing up in my dad’s collection, and I ended up knowing a lot more of these songs than I expected at first.

  • The Remains, ‘Why Do I Cry‘, off of Rock: The Train Kept A Rollin’: A 1966 pop-rock track from another of the discs in the Sony Soundtrack for a Century series that I’ve been working on collecting. Not a bad track, but not really a standout track, either.

  • Nine Inch Nails, ‘La Mer‘, off of The Fragile: This is the album that got me to stop obsessing over anything Trent Reznor did. After quite a few years of talk about how different his next album was going to be, and hearing his remix work with artists like Puff Daddy and the Family, instead of anything new or groundbreaking we got an album comprised mostly of tracks that sounded like all the instrumentals off all his prior albums. I was unimpressed, and as such, have only listened to the album a few times.

Not quite as interesting a selection as I got last week. Maybe we’ll do better next time…

Hmmm…

Curious…are there any amninnies (did I get that right…?) other than me up here in Alaska? I’ve been lurking around this newsgroup for probably about five years now, and am more and more curious about whether or not any of the names I see here either live or visit this frozen wasteland. So far the closest I’ve known of is finding out that Robin’s got family up here, but as I’ve yet to spot the only other heater t-shirt I know of it the state, I haven’t found her yet. Gets kind of boring up here…the general population of Anchorage is pretty uninteresting.

Hm. I know…as soon as I win the lottery (y’know, Ed McMahon knocking on my door and all that shit), I’ll see about taking over a local hotel and hosting a nincon up here just for shits and giggles…unleash all of you on the local population. It’s a fun thought…hell, it’d be funny as hell to sic a bunch of ninnies on the club I dj at — most of the kids there think that nin started with closer and marilyn manson are the height of being gothic. Ah, well, so it goes…I’ll escape from this place eventually.

Anyway, enough late night (early morning?) babble for now.

What if it cost a hundred bucks. What if it cost a thousand. One may want it, but that doesn’t mean it’s worth buying.

Discarding the philosophical ramblings being touched on here, I’d say…no. If it’s the same promo CD i’ve got (friend at a music store gave it to me), it’s only got two tracks. TPD, and a shorter version for radio stations that don’t like songs over 5 minutes. I wouldn’t pay the $15 for that…

I don’t remember even where I first heard about this but…

Somewhere around a year or more ago, there was an ftp site that had a remix of ‘last’ by Butch Vig that had been nixed from the ‘fixed’ ep. As far as I’ve been able to tell, it’s not available anywhere else, and has never been released. When I heard about this, I had a friend download it for me, and I now have it here on my computer (not a bad mix, either).

Questions being:

  1. Does anyone know anything about this mix?
  2. Is it still available anywhere? After being downloaded, broken into pieces, transferred from IBM to Mac, re-pieced together and all, the sound quality isn’t great. Would be interested in getting a better quality file…but don’t have the url I originally got it from.

Any information would be greatly appreciated…

I’ve seen it on two discs…the import version of the HLAH single (pink and blue cover, no halo number listed, only three tracks to it. I’ve seen it most often at Musicland (gag), usually in the singles section with a special ‘Import’ sticker on it), and the boot Demos&Remixes, where it’s called the ‘go-go’ mix, or some such.

Another MoLG (molg? cute sound) fan up here. A friend told me that reznor had done some work with them, so I went out and picked up their first album (at the time, was all that was out), only to figure out trent was nowhere on that, but was still a really good disc. Proceeded to find the BLBT single, then Rite of Shiva, and later Concentration. Like them all…especially ‘All I really Need’ off of the RoS single. Funny…not incredibly great, musically, but funny. Have heard there are singles off of Concentration, but nobody up here carries them…mayhaps when I get down to Seattle…

I might as well join in the fray…

Semi-lurker here…been reading for quite a while, do occasinally post bits and pieces…

Physical: 5 foot eleven, maybe close to six. 140 pounds (yep, skinny). Long hair, below shoulder length, naturally red, dyed black in may, so now it’s half and half. Shaved around the sides and back, with a goatee, and often scruffy face due to sheer laziness. Usually dress primarily in black, but have been doing that my entire life, even before i knew it made me ‘cool’. Anyway…

Otherwise: Currently a resident of Anchorage, Alaska, soon (March/April) to be moving to Seattle…more just to get out of here than for any great love of Seattle. Obligatory non-poser plug, been listening to reznor’s rantings since just after phm came out, even before hlah showed up on emptyvee. Goodie, now that that’s out of the way…semi-collector, not obsessive to having every piece of print about trent, but do have damn near every audio bit I can find…all halos, the hlah import w/opal, purest feeling, demos&remixes, and two live boots that were actually decent quality (solid gold hell and familiar sting). Yippee.

Musically, into damn near anything…collection ranges from Abba to nin to gregorian chant (also picked up before was trendy) to meatloaf to ministry…and so on. Mostly into nin and similar stuffs…the wax trax black box has to be one of the best collections of tunes I’ve picked up in a long time. Anyway, good (about 300) collection of cd’s, dj for a local teen-club for their one alternative night…mostly just having fun playing whatever the fuck I want, really loud, for six hours at a time, and getting paid for it. Not a bad deal.

Anyways, this weird part from the original is what was sampled in the NIN cover, methinks…

As far as I can tell, after being a fan of both Queen and nin for quite a while (simple statement, no flames necessary), I’d be willing to bet that all that ‘sample’ is, is holding down the fast forward button on a cd player and panning it back and forth during the goofball experimental middle section of GDML. Oh yeah, plus the WWRY riff at the end. Yowza.

The only one I know of is Solid Gold Hell, available as an import from Cocomelos Records. Decent enough, although I wouldn’t rave about it. The first four tracks have the best recording quality, the rest of them were obviously recorded from somewhere in the audience, and on some you can hear more of the testosterone-laden ass next to the tape recorder singing than Trent! I figure it’s worth having for those first four tracks…but if you can get it used, do that before blowing the money for the full import price.
