Since I’ll hit 20 years of blogging this November, this year I’m posting a daily list of anything I published on this day in the past.

    • Year 50 Day 104 Sitting in our private sleeper cabin and watching the country roll by.
  • 2020
  • 2018
    • Interesting side effect to Facebook killing the ability to mirror content from outside and my mirroring not just my blog, but also (not all but) many random links and tweets to Tumblr: my Tumblr is probably my most comprehensive online presence right now.
  • 2017
    • My boarding pass is on my watch. That’s just freaking cool.
  • 2016
    • Highlighting my #tattoo (just the one…so far…). Yin/Yang made up of joined smiley faces. Good or bad, light or dark, there’s always something to smile about, some humor to be found, some way to get through. (227/366)
  • 2014
    • For #throwbackthursday: In 2001, shortly before moving down to Seattle. Obviously, cleaning my room wasn’t a priority. :p
  • 2009
    • Norwescon on Flickr Just a quick notice that Norwescon is expanding its presence on Flickr. First off, there is now an official Norwescon account. Additionally, we're working on making it easier for people to contribute and share their memories of cons past (and future).
  • 2007
    • More Fun with Flossie Flossie continues to head for the Big Island, which is on hurricane watch, tropical storm warning, and flash flood watch, has closed its public schools, and is officially under a state of emergency. Oh, and there was an earthquake this morning, too.
  • 2003
    • Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water… Hey, even I can succumb to the occasional giggle at juvenile fart humor every so often.
    • 'go to referrer' bookmarklet Ever opened up a link in a new tab or a new window, then left it alone for a while? Come back to it in a couple hours, figure it's interesting enough to blog about, then realize that you can't remember just whose site pointed you to the link? It's a minor annoyance, if you try to link back to your sources.
    • Whiner Yeah, George, there's, like, a presidential race, in, like, fifteen months or so. This California thing is, like, right around the corner. Like, really, man. Do you really want us all to, like, spend all our time just, like, bashing you instead? Because we're certainly capable of it. Especially when your English usage is so, like, impeccable and everything.
    • Fun with Pig Latin Evennay ownay, it'sway eallyray easyway orfay emay otay eakspay Igpay Atinlay ithoutway avinghay otay inkthay aboutway itway uchmay atway allway. Ypingtay itway isway away ittlelay oremay ifficutlday, utbay eakingspay itway? Easyway asway iepay.
    • Who turned out the lights? Just bizarre, to know that that much of the eastern seaboard lost power today. There doesn't seem to be any real news to the news, but John Hoke has been keeping up with the news as best he can over at his Asylum.
    • Army of One Excellent flash ad from Take Back the Media: 'Army of One'. They're collecting donations to see if they can get it put on national TV, too.

    • Recommended: Jordan River Moving and Storage In the end, our entire move was done under the estimated time (and therefore under the estimated budget), and we were more than happy to give them a good-sized tip. While we don't expect to be moving anytime soon again, we'll definitely be giving Jordan River a call when the time comes. _Highly_ recommended.
  • 2007
    • Dance Off 2007 About a week and a half ago, six teams of people with dance in their souls -- if not their soles -- gathered together for a battle royale at Dance Off 2007. Truly, such fleetfooted feats (feets?) shall never grace a stage again. Until next year, of course. ;)
  • 2004
    • Hurricane Charlie My mom's parents, Harold and Arlene Ward, live in a nursing home in Fort Meyers, Florida — currently hurricane central.
    • Iran planning to attack US forces The rhetoric coming out of the Bush administration has convinced Iran that military conflict is inevitable and rather than await an attack at a time and place of America's choosing, the Iranians will try to inflict significant damage to U.S. forces on Iraqi soil by means of the Mahdi Army and other Shi'a groups.
  • 2003
    • The spectre of Spinal Tap Gravel Man was our signal that the revolving circular stage we were on was about to turn us briskly to face the audience and, we suspected, hurl our much ridiculed, old before his time guitarist into the front row like a ball off a dodgy roulette wheel.
    • Cattle Call 2004 Having watched this for a while, I started to wonder just how the various candidates have fared over the months. So, with a little browsing through the Daily Kos archives and some tinkering in Excel, I can present a (fairly ugly) little graph of each candidate's potential to grab the Democratic nomination, as ranked by Kos.
    • Tomorrow's news, today! There's a good interview with Tom Tomorrow in Salon today.
  • 1995
    • [From Usenet 8.13.95 2300] Down here in Anchorage, about the best place to find anything is at Mammoth Music. They've got two locations for new cd's/tapes, one musical instrument store, and one used-cd store.
    • [From Usenet: 8.13.95 2300] Pop Will Eat Itself, 'Ich bin ein Auslander,' off of Dos Deidos mi Amigos. Sweet album...lots of good stuff.

    • Crackrats! Prairie: (okay, I shouldn't think this is funny, but it's cracking me up): Studies find rats can get hooked on drugs…they fed crack to rats
    • California nullified 4,000 marriages Sad news today from California — their state Supreme Court has decided that San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom overstepped his authority, and declared nearly 4,000 same-sex marriages null and void.
    • Whoops – not that way! Today became a bit more adventuresome than I expected it to be, thanks to a slight change of schedule, and a few transportation-related goofs on my part.
    • DVD driver acquitted This originally just went into my linklog, but considering my previous rant, I wanted to follow up on this one. The Alaskan driver accused of killing two people due to watching a DVD while driving has been acquitted.
    • Truth in advertising I don't know for sure if this is a real ad or not, but if it is, whoever came up with it really needs a raise…
    • New CDC anti-condom guidelines Somehow I'd missed hearing about this until just now (the article is a few weeks old), but new regulations from the CDC threaten to yank federal funding from any HIV-prevention organization that fail to limit their efforts to promoting abstinence and refraining from promoting the use of condoms.
    • The mysterious H. John Heinz IV Of the various children and stepchildren of John Kerry and Teresa Heinz-Kerry, one has been conspicuously absent from all of the various political appearances and shenanigans: H. John Heinz IV, Teresa's oldest child. A few details do surface from time to time, and I've got to say that not only does John sounds like an incredibly accomplished and very interesting individual, he apparently also has impeccable fashion sense.

    • Oh, this'll be fun I need to print, read, internalize, and (possibly hardest of all) understand the Apache mod_rewrite documentation.
    • diveintocrappyteenagepoetry.org This drivel was written sometime in high school, while I was bored in my typing class, and it was (obviously) heavily inspired by Pink Floyd's 'The Wall'.
    • Blaster When that little 'Windows Update' icon blinks at me on my PC, I pay attention to it, download, and install the updates. It's a pain in the butt, especially since there seems to be a new 'cricital update' every week, but sometimes those critical updates really are critical.
    • Three hours later… Now, three hours later I can finally get to work doing what they pay me for — but that's only because I got sick of watching a stalled progress bar, force-quit the Windows Update program, and told it to sod off. My security updates were done anyway, it was just chewing on some less critical patches, so I'm not too worried.
    • Texas ANG Bush Action Figure This figure probably stands 14 inches in height, and is exactly as the future Leader of the Western World(tm) appeared during his service defending our Nation's borders from Mexicans and Bahamians.
    • Fair and balanced So, in order to honor this fine legal milestone, and in the company of many other weblogs, this weblog's tagline has now been changed to "Fair and Balanced".
    • Brass knuckles in nursing homes? An aide in an Arkansas nursing home allegedly beat an 81-year-old woman with brass knuckles because she had been 'disrespectful,' police said Friday.
    • Mouseketeers One of the A-Listers says he was a VeeJay on MTV. But this is pretty much the 21st Century equivalent of some one saying he or she was an original Mousekateer. It's been so long since any living soul has seen either one that, well.. who are we to say?
    • Perception Management Propaganda is all-encompassing when it comes to war, of course. The trick is to try to recognize when you're being fed facts, and when you're being fed propaganda. The above article is excerpted and adapted from Weapons of Mass Deception: The Uses of Propaganda in Bush's War on Iraq, which looks to be very interesting, and worth picking up.
    • To Mr. Brendan Steinhauser I don't care how you justify or rationalize your racism, it's still racism. It's still ugly, small-minded, and disgusting, and it has no place in a country filled with people who would like to be able to say the words 'land of the free, home of the brave' without bitter irony.
    • Bush in Seattle The day before Dean's appearance here, our esteemed leader (*cough*) will be here. Information on planned protest rallys can be found at Action Alert and Stop Bush Seattle, but here's the pertinent information…
    • Dean in Seattle Join thousands of Washingtonians in welcoming Howard Dean and his 'People-Powered Howard Sleepless Summer Tour' to Seattle for a PUBLIC RALLY on Sunday, August 24th, at 6:30 PM at Westlake Center, 4th and Pine, in Seattle. Doors open at 5:30 PM.

    • Comments from the Peanut Gallery I went into the e-mail folder where I dump all the comments that I receive on the site, sorted them all by sender, and started scrolling through. • Starship and Kickshaw If you get a chance to see Starship perform, and it's cheap, and you don't have anything pressing going on, it's not a bad show. Now, if you get a chance to see Kickshaw perform, you should, with absolutely no qualifications whatsoever.

At least, as long as your definition of 'fun' includes 20-some 20-something sorority girls drinking far too much alcohol, being incredibly loud, having no concept that there's anyone else on the dance floor, nearly starting a fight near the bar, and eventually having one of them carried out of the bathroom by two big beefy guys because there was no way she'd be able to walk.

Plus, laundry days pretty much necessitate going back to pants while the kilt is in the wash.

    • Bizarre homophobic Fox News attack on Disney When Disney president Robert Iger went on Fox News to do a brief promotional spot for the Dream Desk (news or commercial…who can tell?), he was suddenly blindsided by host Stuart Varney's homophobic attack on the (not Disney-sponsored) 'Gay Days' at Disney World.

    • A Senegalese view of Bush's Africa trip Today I was forwarded this letter, originally by an anonymous Senegalese woman, giving her impression of our esteemed President's visit — and the impression of America and Americans it left behind.
    • Good luck, Reed Best of luck, Reed. Come home safely.
    • Almost there! I got my latest vacation check today. So, adding that to what I already had saved up in my PayPal account, I now have just over $2000 saved for my new computer!
    • Flash Mobs…so what? Maybe it's just me, but this whole >flash mob meme is already getting old. In my mind, it jumped the shark when Scoble publicly organized one on his weblog (no offense, Robert!).
    • Interpreting the Bible Nick pointed me to this post from Harold Paxton looking at the recent election of Bishop Robinson from the exact opposite point of view than mine. There's certainly nothing wrong with that — as Mark Twain (I believe) said, it's differences of opinion that make horse races.

    • [From Usenet 8.7.95 2300] So, what's the deal? Doing an alternative/industrial all-ages club up here in Anchorage, but it can be hard to get new stuff.... Thing is, some of the stuff you had mentioned in an earlier post wasn't all that new, wasn't sure if I should reply or not.

    • Book forty-four of 2019: The Enterprise War, by John Jackson Miller. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Filling in the blanks of Pike’s Enterprise up to the start of season two of ST: DIS. Not a bad romp, and helps to flesh out some of the secondary characters we see in Pike’s crew.

    • I’m going to avoid the viaduct… The central portion of the Alaskan Way Viaduct was ranked on the same scale. Its score: Nine percent. And if that doesn’t make you want to stay away from the viaduct until they tear the damn thing down, perhaps knowing that the National Bridge Inventory considers it “basically intolerable” will.

    • Back from Vegas We're back! It was a wonderful trip -- three days having a _lot_ of fun bouncing around Vegas with Xebeth. I'll get more ramblings up eventually...for the moment, though, it's just good to be back home.

    • It’s not all bad, really! Last month, I mentioned that I'd been in contact with a magazine reporter who was working on a story about weblogs and some of the potential pitfalls that can come about when recording your life online for the world to see. It appears that Anil has also been contacted by a reporter working on a similar story, and he ended up having some of the same reservations that I did.
    • Condolences Over the course of the past few days, Jessica Wilkinson, a regular member at the Vogue, went missing. Yesterday, her family officially filed a missing persons report with the police, and word started spreading around the various Seattle communities. Last night, the police contacted her family to let them know that she had passed away in her apartment. Nothing else is known at this point.

    • Destinations Not much in the way of posting tonight. Instead, I concentrated on converting the 'Destinations' section of my sidebar so that all items now have comment and TrackBack ability, and there are archives for items that have scrolled off the page.
    • 58 years ago today August 6th marks the 58th anniversary of the A-bomb being dropped on Hiroshima.
    • It's a (rainbow) banner year I'm sure we've still got a long way to go before someone's sexuality matters as little in how we view them as does…oh, well, so we've got a long way to go no matter what. Still, these events give me hope.

    • Thanks to today’s silly memesplosions on Twitter, I’m now familiar with feral hogs, know that William Carlos Williams’ ‘This is Just to Say’ is the source of this poem meme I keep seeing, and learned of the problems of unionized subs (and hogs). A productive day! Of sorts.

    • Teatro Zinzanni at Pacific Place If you get a chance, stop by Pacific Place just at touch before 5pm any Thursday through Sunday in August. One of the performers from Teatro ZinZanni is putting on a short show throughout the month to promote their dinner/circus/cabaret show.

    • Girl talk, MT32b3, and Alan Moore And that pretty much sums up life in the world of me at the moment. Not quite sure what my plans for the weekend are, though there's a lot of Seafair stuff going on around town right now that I may see if I can find a way to check out at one point or another. As is usual for me, though, I'm not planning much of anything more than about 20 minutes in advance....

    • Somehow, I’m not surprised Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.
    • Tigger cleared of all charges In a recent trial in Florida, a Disney employee was found not guilty of fondling a 13 year old girl while posing in a Tigger costume for photographs. My favorite part of the article was a series of photos in which the defense attorney tried on a Tigger costume in order to demonstrate how difficult it can be to know exactly where one's hands are placed while suited up. The photos are priceless…

    • Anatomy of a smear campaign Robinson appears guilty of nothing at all -- save being a gay man who wants to be a bishop. For some, unfortunately, that is enough to justify all sorts of innuendo and dirty tricks. Be warned: This is the way they play.
    • Congratulations, Bishop Robinson The mere fact that we were able to get to this point, despite the last minute machinations of Robinson's detractors, says wonderful things about where we might head in the future. Many, many congratulations to Bishop Robinson, and to all of his supporters.
    • Robinson cleared, vote rescheduled The clergyman seeking to become the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church has been cleared of 11th-hour allegations, church sources have confirmed, NBC News’ Jim Avila reported Tuesday afternoon. The vote by bishops to confirm the elevation of the Rev. V. Gene Robinson, which had been postponed Monday for an investigation into the surprise allegations, was rescheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
