    • My Famous Awkward Family Today, at long last, I got my copy of the AFP book, which uses _both_ photos we submitted! One is on the back cover, and one is given the place of honor as the first featured photo in the book, opening Chapter One. We're also given thanks in the Acknowledgements section as the first family to send in a shot.

    • Leaving Seattle It's official -- Prairie and I have a new apartment! The third place of four that we looked at ended up hitting all our 'gotta have it' qualifications, our 'would be nice if' qualifications, plus a bunch of other goodies that sold us.

    • MT-Upcoming In other words...yes. I'm just _that_ desperate for a stalker following my every move around town. Life just isn't worth living without a psychotically obsessive fan or two, after all.
    • Goth Pride fundraiser Last night I made a rare mid-week visit to the Vogue, as they were having a fundraiser for the local goth community's entry into this Sunday's Pride parade. It gave me a chance to play a little bit with low-light photography, experimenting with various shutter speeds to see if I could get anything decent.

    • Lounging on our back patio on a pretty summer evening. It’s really nice out here.
  • 2012
    • Sheldon Cooper’s Holographic Laptop So I noticed something that amused me while watching Big Bang Theory the other night -- apparently Sheldon has a holographic display on his laptop. The real-world explanation, of course, is the conceit of television's visual language, but that's not nearly as much fun to believe.

    • Fathers Day I just woke up and realized that I'd completely forgotten to say anything about Father's Day yesterday. Oops! I hope all the dads I know had good days yesterday (and will continue having good days tomorrow and in the days to come)!
  • 2005
    • Another bad headline It's _actually_ about a Juneau, Alaska homeless shelter which just realized that it's illegal for them to serve donated game meat, including bear.
    • Podcast 02: Difficult Listening Hour 02v2 I'm posting a series of mix sessions I did a few years back. This is Difficult Listening Hour 02v2 (1h 04m 41s, 59.5Mb). Download, drop into your .mp3 player, and -- hopefully -- enjoy!
    • Advantages of a Real Server A quick look at my traffic over the last month does a good job of illustrating the benefits to moving to a server that can actually respond at a decent speed.

    • That’s a big basement, and a lot of dust I actually had to read this three times before I could parse the sentence the way it was actually intended. I kept reading it and picturing a house with a basement big enough to hold the 8.5 million dusty corpses that had just been discovered.
    • Voices of the Beat: Burroughs, Ginsberg, and more… The Naropa Institute has just released a large number of recordings of lectures and classes to the Internet Archive. Included are recordings of William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and many, many more beat-era poets, writers, and personalities. Incredibly cool. Right now, I'm downloading a 1980 William S. Burroughs lecture on public discourse.

    • Made it to Seattle Well, I'm in Seattle. It may be a while before I am able to put another update on my page, unfortunately. I'm currently staying with some friends who have been kind enough to put my webserver and main work machine on their network, however due to their firewall, I'm not able to update my page from my own machines! • Buffy and Angel? Firstly: is Angel as good of a series as I'm finding Buffy to be? Should I start working my way through this series also? And if so, how should I watch both shows — finish Buffy and move on to Angel, or watch both at the same time?

    • Sister Machine Gun at the Fenix Underground Have I ever mentioned how much I love living in Seattle? One of the major reasons (aside from naked people on bikes, of course), is the simple fact that many of the bands that I've been listening to (and playing during my DJ career) for years actually come through town every so often, so I can actually see them.
    • Fremont Solstice Parade 2004 I got back a while ago from spending the day at the Fremont Solstice Parade and Festival. I had a wonderful time -- the weather was incredible, and the parade was a blast. I'm hot, tired, and a bit sunburnt, but it was very worth it.

    • Vote for Dean On my first day in office, I will tear up the Bush Doctrine of preemptive war. I will end this President's policy of domestic division. I will repeal those parts of the Patriot Act that betray the Bill of Rights. • A visit from the Muffin Posting may be a bit light during the week — for some silly reason, I have this bizarre tendency to give the computers short shrift when I've got actual real, living, breathing people visiting my little world. • In retrospect, this was really stupid. Looking back, this post from Oct. 25, 2001 -- almost exactly two years before the brouhaha at Microsoft -- stands out as quite likely the stupidest post I've ever made, and one that could potentially have gotten me fired for _far_ better reasons than that silly photo.
    • Free Wi-Fi for my apartment? Today on my way home for lunch I saw a work crew installing one of the Wi-Fi antennas on a lamppost on the 8th Avenue bridge over Freeway Park. Now I'm starting to wonder if my building just might end up with free Wi-Fi access provided by the City of Seattle.

    • Fuck Trump. And if that upsets you, especially because I used such uncouth language, and we on the left must not stoop to such levels if we want to avoid alienating people, read this Twitter thread and re-think your outrage.

    • The West Wing episode we just watched was about filibusters. I started talking about yesterday’s filibuster. At which point Prairie told me to stop talking and accused me of filibustering. (168/366)

    • Is the del.icio.us HTML tool broken? I've been noticing some weirdness with my 'Eclinkticism' sidebar, and it appears that the HTML service provided by del.icio.us at `del.icio.us/html/username` may be having some issues. Anyone out there seeing this too?

    • Offshoring Some things from last night's Weblogger meetup that just popped into my head. Politically correct? No. Funny? Definitely.
    • Mixes now Podcast compatible In theory, the post for Difficult Listening Hour 01 should now be Podcast ready, and I'll do the same for all future mix sessions. If there are any problems or issues with this, just let me know, as I've got no real clue what I'm doing here.

    • Happy Anniversary to me! Today marks three years to the day since I escaped the frozen wastelands of Alaska and starting life in Seattle.
    • Rev. Moon crowned Messiah in Senate office building Should Americans be concerned that on March 23rd a bipartisan group of Congressmen attended a coronation at which a billionaire, pro-theocracy newspaper owner was declared to be the Messiah – with royal robes, a crown, the works? Or that this imperial ceremony took place not in a makeshift basement church or a backwoods campsite, but in a Senate office building?
    • Literary geek (as opposed to literal geek, that is) You are a complete literary geek, from knowing the classics (even the not-so-well-known classics and tidbits about them) to knowing devices used in writing, when someone has a question about literature, they can bring it to you and rest assured; you know the answers.

    • Poems for Laila I discovered PfL when I was in Germany in the summer of 1991. I saw a display stand advertising the release of their second album, and gave it a listen. What I heard was enough to peak my interest, so I bought their first two albums — 'Another Poem for the 20th Century' and 'La Fillete Triste' — on the spot.

    • More constitutional fun By executive fiat, the Constitutional protections of American citizens are now officially contingent upon the whims of the President. So much for a nation of 'laws, not men.' I don't care what your politics are. If you don't find this deeply disturbing...well, I really don't know what to say.
    • Guess I got out in time It was definitely interesting to be able to watch some of the downfall of Andersen from the inside for a while -- and to see the final results as they come down the newswire. Neat stuff.
    • Even permafrost can melt An interesting piece from the NYT about just how drastically global warming -- despite Bush's insistance that it's not a real worry -- is affecting Alaska.
    • Freedom of speech? I welcome anyone to these rallies, and I welcome you to theirs. I hope you will never go to theirs and stop them from speaking. I believe in free speech at every university in America.

    • Why Garfield sucks Not having been a fan of Garfield since my age hit the double-digits, I can't really say that I was terribly surprised by this look at Jim Davis' marketing-centric approach to producing the Garfield comic strip.
    • Winer goes off the deep end It's difficult for me to even conceive of doing something like this. While I don't host anywhere near the number of sites that weblogs.com did (whatever that number might be), I do host a few friends sites for free, and I can't imagine simply pulling the plug on their sites. Not only is it an amazingly callous thing to do, but the guilt alone would have me up at night — and that's just for three other people!
    • Racism is alive and well Owners of a New Jersey swim club are paying one million dollars to settle a lawsuit against them for denying access to 'black' and 'brown skinned' people.
    • Not terribly subtle [Ronald Reagan] was also a deeply, unabashedly religious man. But he accepted that as a responsibility, not a mandate. And there is a profound difference.

    • One year in Seattle! It's been a good year. The usual ups and downs of day to day life, sometimes with a bit more stress due to the new environs and the general issues of transplanting one's life, but overall, pretty good.
