    • Oh, sure. Mexico’s election rides “a wave of populist anger” resulting in “a landslide victory” that is “a clear rejection of the status quo in the nation” and a “sweeping mandate to reshape the country” — and moves to the political left. Okay, US voters: our turn in November!

    • Patches (as we have dubbed this very friendly neighborhood cat) decided that Prairie’s lap was the place to be, caring not one whit that poor Prairie is allergic and would immediately have to go change clothes. “It was worth it,” says Prairie. #cat #kitty #catsofinstagram

    • Well, hopefully this will make finding her easier…. #findingdory
    • New car! And actually new, too — a 2016 Chevy Sonic with all of 16 miles on the odometer! Plus very nice service from Miguel and everyone else here. It’s an exciting day! (184/366)
    • Chucks of the day (32/?): black low tops with multicolored (red, green, orange, purple, blue) striping, purple inner lining, and suede(-ish) heel stripe and tongue logo. #chucks #converse

    • Lawn mowing isn’t my favorite chore, but some days it’s gotta be done.

    • Life in Ellensburg: All Graduated and Employed! I know it's been a long time since I've done much in the way of 'real' blogging. Believe me, I _know_ -- it's been bugging me. However, the reason for the delay has been for two very interconnected reasons: I don't like blogging about things that are happening until they've actually happened, and I've been a lot busier here than I expected to be. It's all for good reasons, though -- Ellensburg has been treating me very well, as it turns out.
    • Markdown is the new Word 5.1 Almost all of my writing for many, many years now has been in a text editor using Markdown-formatted text. I'm using Markdown formatting for this blog post (which WordPress then automatically translates into HTML), I've written many, many discussion board posts for school in Markdown format before pasting them into BlackBoard, and I use Markdown formatting whenever I'm writing email messages.
    • A Real First-Class News Experience Now, I'm not a die-hard 'information wants to be free' crusader, and I really don't have a problem with paying a reasonable fee for media that I'm interested in. However, I do want to be able to _use_ the information that I pay for, and a specialized system is _not_ something I'm willing to pay for. Give me text on a webpage, RSS feeds for my newsreader...information I can _use_, not something that locks it away.
    • My First and Only Online Handle I'm actually kind of lucky in this respect. I've only ever used one online handle, and while I've deprecated it a bit these days in favor of my real name, I still actively use it as a login name and occasional identifier. Most anyone who's interacted with me online for any appreciable amount of time will recognize my online alias of djwudi.

    • Me and Prairie ...as seen on the Simpsons. If we were ever on the Simpsons, that is. Courtesy of the character generator in The Simpsons Movie website.

    • Tsunami Early Warning System After the massive destruction of the south Asia tsunami, the Red Cross has decided to distribute FREE Tsunami Early Warning System/ Earthquake Detectors. Earthquakes can be dangerous. Especially at beaches where Tsunamis can occur. Know the signs to watch for of a nearby earthquake!
  • 2004
    • Eau de Power Mac Taste and scent specialists International Flavors and Fragrances have partnered with fashion and art magazine Visionaire to produce a special fragrance capturing the scent of computers — specifically, 'the headspace in the Apple computer store in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood.'
    • 9/11 ≠ Iraq Designs on the White House has been running a t-shirt design contest, and they've just announced the winners. Some good shirts in there, I'm hard pressed to find a favorite.
    • Hagar the Horrible …Hagar used his position on the reproductive health committee to oppose the otherwise overwhelmingly approved vote to recommend over-the-counter sale of the morning-after contraceptive Plan B. The vote to approve the sale of Plan B was then overruled by the Bush administration.
  • 2003
    • Woof Just what every goth dog lover needs — a doggie bones costume!
    • Still looking I could have sworn that I linked to this before (it's been on the 'net for months), but I can't find it now, and it's bouncing around the 'net again.
    • LiveJournal RSS feeds Just a note to myself: RSS feeds are available for any LiveJournal simply by adding "/rss" to the end of the URL.
    • Yummy! I just looked at the label on the soda machine here and could have sworn that rather than Cherry Coke, it read Chewey Coke.
    • Juxtapositioning Interesting, if depressing, combinations of headlines on MSNBC's main page right now: Bring them on! / Two more soldiers die.
    • Bring 'em on! Can we get away with starting a 'Ball Gags for Bush' fundraiser drive?
    • The hat?!? No one wants to put words in J. K. Rowling's mouth, but it's safe to assume that when she hails her readers' creativity, she has in mind something other than tales wherein Professor Snape is fellated by the Sorting Hat.
    • Old School Went out to the Vogue last night for an old-school techno night.
    • Angels or Devils ...if you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But, if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth. It's just a matter of how you look at it, that's all.
    • 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, BC Vancouver, BC has just been awarded the 2010 Olympics. Pretty nifty — they're just a couple hours north of Seattle, so I might actually be able to wander up that way and see some of the fun in seven years or so.
    • Great Wall of China disappearing This was a little distressing to read about: the Great Wall of China, one of the few (the only?) man-made structures visible from space, is falling apart.
    • People Powered Democracy Most of all, these people seemed to be supporting Dean because other people they know and trust are supporting Dean. The Internet campaign magnifies the voices of friends and relatives above the voices of the famous or the powerful.

    • Which fireworks display? Two out of the past three years, I've gone down to Gas Works Park for the annual WaMu Family Fourth fireworks display. • Bush ad equates Kerry, Gore and Moore with Hitler To be entirely honest, I'm torn between being disgusted by this latest video from the Bush campaign, and outright laughing at how spectacularly it could — and should — backfire on them.
    • Unintended consequences A national magazine is looking for people whose weblogs have led to unexpected problems. I got interviewed because of my experiences with Microsoft, and now they're looking for more personal, relationship-oriented stories. Can anyone out there help toss some pointers their way?
    • Spider Man 2 Overall, Spider Man 2 is a lot of fun. Walking home and turning it over in my head, I kept coming back to the same basic thoughts I had about Spider Man. I'm not quite as wild about Spider Man 2 as I was about the first — but there are some definite similarities.

    • Guilty pleasures It's a silly, stupid, overplayed song — but I've gotta admit, I still enjoy it, and I'd love to hear The Rednex 'Cotton-Eye Joe' performed live, with a real band (banjo, fiddle, harmonica, and all).

To go with this, Dad gave us a small blue box (well, blue, white, and green, but I've always thought of it as blue) with a bunch of old 45s that he and his brother Doug had collected when they were younger.
    • 30 Years of Airplane Possibly one of the funniest films ever made, Airplane!, just turned 30. While I'd read that Airplane! was based on Zero Hour!, I'd never realized just how closely the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker team had hewed to the original.

    • Daring Fireball on Dashboard and Konfabulator I haven't poked my head into the Dashboard versus Konfabulator brouhaha for two reasons: firstly, I'm not a user of Konfabulator; and secondly, the whole thing seemed patently ridiculous to me. However, John Gruber has done a masterful job of explaining why this is really a non-issue.

    • Made it!
    • I like these weird, slightly Giger-esque biological blobby art things. Prairie finds them disturbing.
    • Since we’re about to head down to Vegas, today’s #throwbackthursday shot is from out last/first time there, back in 2006!

    • You Win! On this day, 60 years ago, The New Yorker published 'The Lottery,' by Shirley Jackson.

    • Sentenced to two life terms in bed? Another addition to the list of reasons why I'm going to hell, or, things I _really_ shouldn't find funny, but do. It's not the following story that's funny -- to the contrary, it's rather horrendous -- but NetNewsWire's 'show corrections' feature inadvertently had me snickering as my brain mashed together bits of the two versions of the story summary.

    • Seattle Solstice Odd things about being a (fairly) recent Alaska transplant — this last weekend was summer solstice, and I didn't even really notice. While I don't think I'll ever be moving back to Alaska, the summertimes really are some of what I miss.
    • Butt Kicking ;) I get the impression from what you said that your sole experience with Harry Potter so far is watching the first movie. If that's truly the case, than I'm not too surprised that you 'don't get it.'
    • 1-800-ooooops An adulterous Finn pressed all the wrong buttons as he made love in a car -- unknowingly prompting his mobile phone to call home just in time for his wife to hear his mistress moan 'I love you.'
    • The Fear Thing and the Sex Thing Not fearing sex is great training for not fearing anything else. Including how you look and sound on TV.
    • More on Lawrence v. Texas This is huge. Our nation took a huge step today toward eliminating one of the last standing impediments to true equality under the law. Just wait until the press picks this up.
    • Year 5 over already I didn't really mean to stay up until 4:15am to finish Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix last night…I just got sucked in and lost track of time. Roughly eight or nine hours reading time over the course of the day all told, before and after work. Good stuff!
    • Supreme Court Tries Sodomy…and likes it! Sorry, I couldn't help the title — especially after Slate magazine's unfortunate choice of headline ('Supreme Court tries sodomy') from the beginning of this trial.

    • I’m back! Really! I’m here! I got back in Monday night, I've just been too caught up in either resting or getting life as usual going again down here to have tossed anything up on the page for the past couple days.

    • MiS Day One Today was day one of what I've dubbed the "Men in Skirts" weekend, with a jaunt out to Golden Gardens Park for the Utilikilts 5th Anniversary party.
    • Shake, rattle, and roll 'Did you feel that?' 'Yeah...what is that?' 'No idea.' The entire apartment was shaking, slightly, but very noticeably, about once every second and a half or so. It felt like a small earthquake, except that it was far too regular, and it kept going.

    • Vatican art online The Vatican has put their artwork collections online at Vatican Museums. I haven't taken the time to dive through it extensively yet, but it looks to be a fascinating site.
    • IntyOS IntyOS is not a port of Contiki and does not have the same desktop environment, nor the same built-in tools. It was written from scratch in CP-1600 assembly language in order to fit exactly to the hardware specificities of the Intellivision. Its main goal is now to see how far it's possible to go with today's technologies on such a limited system from the early 80's...

    • Truth is the Weapon… It's been said a lie can circle the global before Truth gets its boots on. But once shod, Truth and only Truth can crush tyrants, kick down prison doors and walk the world back into the sunshine of freedom.
    • Alive again There was some unintended downtime here last night through mid-day today — unfortunately, I don't really know much more than that.

    • Thankfully I finally got a new digital camera last week…. It's pretty nice. I wish I could download pictures to my PC. Thankfully, I have a Mac now. (I hated when annoying people said things like that before I had a Mac. ;)
    • 'Hands-free' isn't accident free I've got a habit of hanging up on people if I know that they're calling me from a cell phone in their car. I've been grumbled at this on more than a few occasions, especially lately when they can use the excuse that they're using a 'hands free' headset, so they don't have to have one hand on the phone. I'll still get off the phone — I've never believed that jabbering on a cell phone while driving, with or without a headset, is safe.
