  • 2020
    • 📚 thirty-three of 2020: Strike Zone by Peter David ⭐️⭐️ #startrek #tng Can’t decide if it wants to be comedic or serious, and has wildly out-of-character (or ridiculously exaggerated) moments for nearly every main character. Amusing moments, but not a good Trek novel.

    • Bumbershoot '03: Fri, Aug 29 Allrighty then — home from the first day of Bumbershoot 2003, pictures are downloaded to the 'puter, and I've sorted through today's set of 91 to find 10 to toss up here. Let day one begin…
    • Four day weekend! So, I'm about out the door to start a four-day weekend jam-packed with sunshine and good music. Expect lots of pictures and babble over the next few days, if I'm not too exhausted by the time I get home each night!
    • Mac Viruses There are zero known Mac OS X viruses or worms.
    • Holly Chernobyl My friend Holly, whom I've known since we both lived up in Anchorage, is going to be performing in tonight's Pizzazz! Talent Show at Bumbershoot!
  • 2002
    • Cool tricks with MovableType I wanted to toss this up really quickly before I crashed out tonight -- over the course of the evening, I've tossed in a few very cool tweaks to my blog setup.

  • 2015
    • Another fulfilled Kickstarter project arrived while we were gone: Ako Dice. I don’t even use dice all that much, I just really liked the design. One plastic glow in the dark set, one metal set.
  • 2014
    • At Eartgquake Park. We saw a moose and calf across the street from the parking lot when we pulled in!
    • Batman was quite impressed by the local flora on display at the Botanical Gardens.
    • Managed to find a spot at the top of Campbell a Airstrip Road (Brasher) where we could still get an overview of the Anchorage bowl.
  • 2006
    • Camping Two happier items: I got my financial aid, and Prairie and I are heading up to Mt. Ranier to go camping.
    • It’s Not Time To Go Yet Was wondering if you could do me a favor in your spare time (ha-ha)? ... What I would like to know is -- what are your views on what happens when you die? I really don't have any firm beliefs...but I really love to hear what other people think.
    • So Very Predictable If anyone else in the world were to stand in front of a few hundred thousand people and ask them to throw money at them -- and not just a little money, but nothing smaller than a ten, fifties are preferred -- they'd probably get very soundly beaten. If you happen to be named George Lucas, though, you can get away with it again and again and again...
  • 2003
    • Korea ready to go nuclear? At this rate, we'll be seeing mushroom clouds again before we know it. If we're lucky, they'll be confined to test sites — if we're unlucky Bush's steadfast and stubborn intransigence just may score a body count the US hasn't been party to in decades.
    • Military accounting We keep hearing more and more about how much the reconstruction and rebuilding of Iraq is going to cost (on top of the billions already spent so far for the invasion and occupation). Wouldn't it be nice if we could cut those costs a bit?
    • Interview Me III: From Jonas The third of a few interviews with me, this one with questions courtesy of Jonas.
    • 'Stay away from MS' THE US Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA) has urged the US Department of Homeland Security to avoid using Microsoft software.
    • Howard Dean, rock star And wouldn't it be great…wouldn't it be really bitchin' if you had a political leader who was running for the big office…where you could like them as much as you like your favorite musician?
    • That hurts So…I noticed that you've been an American Express cardholder since I was two.
    • Flying High Howard Dean has gone from nobody to the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination. Now he's a political rock star, and he just went on a coast-to-coast tour to prove it. The Stranger tagged along for the ride.
    • Yahoo! News RSS feeds Jeremy notes today that Yahoo! News now has RSS feeds available. A good thing for finding news — but not for linking to news.
    • Blatant propaganda The Village Voice takes a look at the upcoming 'docudrama' DC 9/11.
    • Outsourcing fund raising? You'd think that if Bush was really concerned about keeping jobs in America, and getting Americans back to work, his campaign wouldn't be outsourcing fund raising phone calls to India.
    • Blogging from Afghanistan His driver, Babrack, although probably not spelt that way, is an ex-Mujahadeen who credits Stallone's performance in Rambo 3 for teaching him the correct technique for firing a rocket launcher and looking good at the same time.
  • 2002
    • Portugal sounds nice… This led to an entertaining little discussion, starting with beth's assertion that '...just for the record not every woman in the world wants an orgasm every time'. Things bounced merrily along for a while, until Miguel Cardoso posted the following entertaining and fascinating rundown of Porgugese sexual customs.
    • WudiVisions One upside of having to redo everything from the ground up is that it's allowing me to play with some ideas that I'd had floating around in my head for a while, and just hadn't tried yet -- and other ideas that have just appeared during this project.
    • Progress It's a long, long way from where we want to be...

    • (From earlier today.) “…we have wormsign the likes of which even God has never seen.” Okay, it’s an ice worm (which my iPhone wanted to autocorrect to “a nice worm”), not Shai Hulud, but Batman couldn’t let an obvious Dune reference go to waste.
    • (From earlier today.) “Do you see all that ice?! Mr. Freeze must be behind this dastardly deed. I’m sure of it!” Glaciers seem to be only vaguely understood by Batman.
    • (From earlier today.) Batman’s cover is blown, as he’s spotted by the only other passengers on our Portage Glacier cruise.
    • (From earlier today.) “The Batboat looks a little less impressive than I remember.”
    • (From this morning.) Road trip! “To the Batmobile! Or…closest rental equivalent.”

Bush …for the Republicans to jump on John Kerry and say that he's not a patriot, after he went to Vietnam and was shot at and fought for our freedom and came back here and protested against the war - 'he's a flip flopper.' Let me tell you, John Kerry is 100 times a better patriot than George Bush or Dick Cheney or Donald Rumsfeld.

    • Untrusted content, nofollow, etc. Phil Ringnalda pointed to an idea that Ian Hickson just tossed out while brainstorming ways to battle the ever-increasing issue of comment spam. Personally, I'd love to be able to wrap the comments section of my individual entry pages in something like this — and actually, it reminds me a lot of a technique I used to use when I had my website running on my own webserver.
    • A good UI is a good thing Terrence has a review of his Nomad Zen Xtra mp3 player posted, and while it's essentially a positive review, one line stood out to me. After having had the unit for six months and using it on what sounds like a near-daily basis, he mentions that he has 'basically mastered the controls.'

    • Got a great present from Prairie today! We got to see this at last year’s #Worldcon (Sasquan), and thought it was great (in the “really cheesy B movie” sense of the word). She remembered it after seeing me talking about the #hugoawards, and ordered us a copy. Yay #Australiens! (238/366)

    • Howard Dean rally in Seattle I was already solidly in Dean's camp before this, but being able to see him in person definitely cemented my position — here's hoping that his momentum keeps growing, and we can get him not just the Democratic nomination, but the Presidency in 2004.

    • “Author NK Jemisin has scooped her third Hugo award for best science-fiction novel and, in doing so, has become the standard-bearer for a sea change in the genre’s diversity, as women – especially women of colour – swept the boards at last night’s ceremony.” Excellent.

    • Texas pledge Honor the Texas flag, I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one and indivisible.

    • Counter-Googling …instead of consumers Googling you before they buy your services, you should Google THEM, and instantly get more personal information than you'd ever be able to capture with traditional 1:1 in an entire life-time.

    • Giant Gerbils I'm trying to decide what amuses me more — this Netscape News story about an infestation of giant gerbils in China, or the fact that the article mentions the fact that Britain has a National Gerbil Society.
