    • In line at Voodoo Doughnuts. Half an hour in, almost in sight of the door. This is a little nuts!
  • 2006
    • Desperation Someone just came to my site via a Google search for 'oh god give me a job i need a fucking job just give me a job i want a job okay'.
    • Fall ’06 TV Plans So that's the TV plan for the next few months. A lot more than I used to do, and all subject to being preempted by school, work, or other major life events...but it's nice to have some downtime every so often.
  • 2005
    • A few general updates on life I haven't really done one of these in a while, so I figured it was about time. Work goes well as I get used to being a salesperson, and fun with scheduling effects everything from planned trips to Alaska to how much 'puter time I'm getting.
  • 2004
    • Okay, okay…85-90% straight I've believed for a long time that the three major classifications of sexuality — straight, gay, and bisexual — are inherently limiting, and fairly unrealistic. Rather than lumping everyone into one of three categories, I've always figured it's more of a sliding scale…or possibly something along the lines of an inverse bell curve, with same-sex attraction on one side and opposite-sex attraction on the other.
    • Of nuance and nuisances We have to get back to the place we were, where terrorists are not the focus of our lives, but they're a nuisance.
    • National Coming Out Day Terrance reminded me that today is National Coming Out day. My best wishes to any of you choosing to come out today, and of course, to all of you who already have.
    • Dreams So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable.
    • The Death of Superman 'Superman' actor Christopher Reeve, who turned personal tragedy into a public crusade and from his wheelchair became the nation's most recognizable spokesman for spinal cord research, has died. He was 52.
    • Bush’s Dred Scott reference Remember when Bush made the odd reference to the Dred Scott case during his answer to what kind of Supreme Court justice he'd appoint in the second debate? It didn't seem to make a lot of sense, and had a lot of people confused. Looks like one of the diarists on Daily Kos may have stumbled upon the answer — it's right-wing code for abortion.

    • Kinda freaky – voices from the past …the legitimate government of Kuwait will be restored to its rightful place, and Kuwait will once again be free. Iraq will eventually comply with all relevant United Nations resolutions, and then, when peace is restored, it is our hope that Iraq will live as a peaceful and cooperative member of the family of nations, thus enhancing the security and stability of the Gulf.
    • Wired goes CSS As is typical for movements like this, it's the 'little people' that start the ball rolling (in this case, primarily weblogs and personal sites), then the 'big boys' follow. Today, one of the first major, heavy-traffic sites has unveiled their new standards-compliant design — Wired.
    • iMac caught with PC in illicit love nest In a surprise development that has rocked the computing world today, paparazzi have made public a photograph of Apple's popular iMac computer cavorting poolside with what appears to be a Microsoft Windows-based PC.

    • Short Treks E06: “The Trouble with Edward” Okay…yes, it’s funny (and be sure to watch all of it). I laughed quite a few times. But wow, are they playing fast and loose with canon and biology. Hard to say much more without spoilers, but…I’m very torn on what to think. 🖖

    • Over-Distributed Identity What I need is some form of comment aggregator service that would track when a particular post (of any form) is made, monitor its status on each of the various services, then either collect any comments at a central location or even simply alert me when a comment is made.

    • Journalistic Integrity at its finest The story 'Filipino-American history recognized' stated that the 'Nuestra Senora de Buena Esperanza,' the galleon on which the first Filipinos landed at Morro, Bay, Calif., loosely translates to 'The Big Ass Spanish Boat.' It actually translates to 'Our Lady of Good Hope.'

  • 2003
    • Help Bush flush out the leak! Our dear Pres. Bush is apparently having some difficulties with the task of narrowing down just who in his staff would have been so underhanded as to leak Valerie Plame's name and CIA affiliation to the press. However, we can help!
    • New $20 bills The US's new twenty-dollar bills should start hitting banks today, soon to start circulating around to everyone else.
    • Sigh As of right now — 10am on the day that tickets were available to be purchased — the Lord of the Rings Marathon at the Cinerama is sold out.

    • MovableType upgrade I've just upgraded to MovableType 2.5. This will probably break a few of the features (off the top of my head, the smileys will need to be fixed, and possibly the 'recent comments' section), but I'll get those re-enabled as quickly as I can.

    • That One This goes beyond refusing to look at Obama in the first debate. With this slightly dehumanizing phrase, McCain may have just played into the emerging narrative of Obama-hate that has been sprouting at McCain-Palin rallies.

    • Not in our stars, but in ourselves. Every time I hear this monologue, it strikes me just how topical it is. How easy it would be to replace the references to Sen. McCarthy with references to President Bush and have it read just as accurately.

    • iChat faxes? A minor but amusing goof on Apple's site right now: in the Top New Panther Features sidebar on many of the pages, iChat's one-line summary is 'Send and receive faxes.'
    • Panther Announced Mac OS X 10.3, a.k.a. Panther, has finally had its official release date announced — October 24th, just a little over two weeks from now.

    • Animatrix What is the Animatrix? Well, okay, so my first answer would probably involve something along the lines of Betty Page making a cameo in a Roger Rabbit cartoon. But that'd be wrong.
    • If the shoe fits… Khatami said the U.S. possesses the world's largest arsenal of nuclear weapons, weapons 'that, when first developed, were used immediately to kill half a million innocent civilians just months after acquiring them. No nation that has committed nuclear genocide can be entrusted with weapons of mass destruction.'

    • About the server switch Okay, so what's up with switching servers? Those of you who are regulars have probably seen me mention that I was considering doing this a time or two in the past, and now I've just gone and done it. Well, really, the primary motivation is very simple…
    • Server Switch If you're seeing this entry, it means that the transfer to my new server has gone through. Expect images to be broken for a while as I get them transferred over — all the actual information should be here, though.
    • Ex-cellent… Parody image of Edwards and his opponet at the VP debates.

    • 42 minutes Not having a digital video camera to play with video bits, and hot having any multi-megabyte Photoshop files to play with, I have to admit that I haven't exactly been taxing my G5 since I got it. • Shameless greed Seeing as how Christmas is slightly less than three months away, I figured I'd indulge my lust for new-'n'-shiny-things and add a link to my Amazon Wishlist to my site (it's towards the bottom of the sidebar, just above the shameless plea for money — gotta keep my greed centralized!).
    • The argument for war So it seems that Bush will be making his case for war against Iraq tonight on television. Unfortunately, I'll be at work, and won't be able to listen in. Bummer.
    • Not In Our Name rally Today was the day for NION rallies across the country. Something of a new experience for me — I'm fairly vocal with my friends and occasionally here on my site about my beliefs, but I'd yet to ever actually participate in anything like this. I figured it was time to 'put my money where my mouth is', so to speak, and so about 12:30pm we started walking up to Volunteer Park for the rally, in time to get there right about 1pm when it was scheduled to start.

    • .com, .org, what’s the difference? Last night during the VP debates, I noted that Dick Cheney mentioned factcheck.com when responding to some of Edwards' claims about Haliburton. I didn't actually check out the site immediately post-debate, so I'm just now picking up on this funny little tidbit:
    • Next track! Next track! It always screws with my head when a radio station is playing a song from a CD that skips.
    • World on Fire If you haven't watched it yet, watch Sarah McLachlan's video for 'World on Fire' (iTunes required). Just do it.

    • Don't ignore the youth It's always incredible when people can stop and take the time to recognize that if you can talk to today's youth rather than at them, if you can take them seriously, and if you can tap that enthusiasm, energy, and initiative, that you can muster a force that is truly one to be reckoned with. The PB knew that at EYE, and it looks like Dean and the people at Generation Dean know it and are doing everything they can to put that boundless energy to good use, and to knock Bush on his elitist little keister in 2004.
    • TypePad discount codes Today TypePad moved out of 'Preview Release' status, making them officially open for business. I still have fifteen discount codes available that will get anyone who uses one a 20% discount for as long as they stay with the TypePad service.
    • 32 cents At first I thought the guy at the register had goofed up my order, but nope. A manager came over and said that over the weekend, they'd raised the price of their small drinks. Okay, prices fluctuate from time to time, usually upwards, but a 32 cent jump for a 12oz (if that) soda? Yikes!

    • On that whole TV thing… Most people who've known me for a while are aware that I'm not much of a fan of television -- and actually haven't really _watched_ television in a long, long time. • Want a child? Better get married… If this passes, I may want to _stop_ admitting that, though I grew up in Alaska, I was _born_ in Indiana...and most of my extended family on my dad's side is still there. • Nicknames Tiny Sugar Packets of Evil is asking about nicknames today. Since she asked…
    • You will never lose betting on human stupidity Every so often I mention to people that I haven't watched television, for the most part, in somewhere around a decade or more. I've got a whole host of reasons why I don't bother with television — and today, I just got one more.
    • Dec. 16: LOTR Marathon It's official: the Lord of the Rings Marathon will be at the Seattle Cinerama on Dec. 16th.
    • Search the web? A question for Windows UI gurus — why in the world is there a 'Search the web' button right next to the 'Up one level' button in open/save dialog boxes in Windows XP?

    • NaNoWriMo I'm not entirely sure yet, but I've just run across something that I'm really tempted to make a shot at — National Novel Writing Month, in which all participants have one month, from Nov. 1st to Nov. 30th, to write a 50,000 word novel (approximately 175 pages).

    • A wish for a Best-Case Scenario We’ve had a year of worst-case scenarios, of course, so the odds are against this. But I can hope.
    • From Q&A to The Cage I may not agree with every choice the current stewards of Trek are making, but I think it’s clear that they have a lot of love and respect for the universe.

    • Alligator House Dance Party Nothing terribly fancy here — just an hour's worth of playing around, entertaining my nieces (ages 10 and 7) during a visit.

    • “Yakko’s World” — the Animaniacs song with all the countries of the world — just got a brand new verse with all the countries added since the song was written!
    • Book thirty-five of 3018: Flash Gordon: The Time Trap of Ming XIII, by Alex Raymond and Con Steffanson. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
    • Siri shortcut for “xyzzy” Old-school geeks will (well, maybe) be amused by this: a very simple, very stupid, tiny iOS 12 Siri shortcut. Tap it in Shortcuts and Siri will reply with, 'Nothing happens.'

    • Tried two new kinds of apple we hadn’t seen before: Koru and Aurora. Both were good, but the Aurora was our favorite. Quite good.
    • Before and after my end of the month shave-and-a-haircut (two bits!). I’m much more presentable now. (276/366)

    • Bad Books Reading List Via Terrance: How many of the 100 most frequently challenged books of 1990-2000 have you read? The ones I've read are in **bold**...
    • Shining Okay, so I'm a bit late to the party on this one, but if you haven't seen it yet, you've _really_ got to check out the trailer for a little heartwarming family comedy called Shining (9.5Mb QT .mov). A definite must-see!
    • Dilbert on Doocing Everyone's favorite geeky office shlub takes a look at job-related weblogging today.
    • Bouncing and flirting Much fun out at the_vogue tonight. Flirting with friends I hadn't seen in a while (Tej, Suzanne, Noreen) and friends I just made tonight (Margarite, Amanda, Sarah). All in all, definitely worth going.

    • Disney turning Bloom County 3-D You know, much as I'd like to get excited about the prospect of a Bloom County feature film, given Disney's track record over the past few years, the news that their first foray into 3-D animation without Pixar's involvement will be a Bloom County film doesn't thrill me.

    • And this is a surpise to…who? Remember all those weapons of mass destruction that Bush et al assured us were all over Iraq, just waiting to be found? Funny thing, that — apparently, they don't exist after all.
    • Graham out? It's a little unclear, but it looks like Bob Graham is abandoning the Democratic nomination race.
    • Silliness reigns supreme Looking foolish does the spirit good. The need not to look foolish is one of youth's many burdens; as we get older we are exempted from more and more.
    • Get your DJ name! According to Quiz Me's Get Your DJ Name page, I'm either DJ Broken Box, DJ Master Storm, or DJ Hell-Bent Storm, depending on whether I start with Michael, Woody, or Wudi.
    • A marriage made in heaven If Ivana Trump married, in succession, Orson Bean (actor), King Oscar (of Norway), Louis B. Mayer (of MGM), and Norbert Wiener (mathematician), she would then be Ivana Bean Oscar Mayer Wiener
    • Genetic Engineering Aside from the obvious (and brilliant) attention-getting shock tactics of the image, there's some interesting questions being raised here. Unfortunately, it's time for me to head out the door to get to work. Discuss amongst yourselves.
    • ACME catalog How wonderful: the ACME catalog, a collection of every ACME product ever seen in the classic Warner Brothers cartoons! Me, I think I'm going for the Instant Girl
    • Democrat fundraising outdoing Bush Based on the preliminary estimates for the third quarter, the 10-person Democratic field collectively will have outraised the Bush campaign, an indication of how fired up Democratic donors are.
