    • 📚 sixteen of 2020: This Immortal by Roger Zelazny ⭐️⭐️ 1966 Hugo Best Novel Meh. Maybe it’s a combination of mid-60s SF and the current pandemic stress, and I might have been more receptive at another time, but this was a slog.

    • Another ST:DIS Theory After watching tonight’s episode of Discovery (S02E11), Prairie and I came up with what we think is a very possible theory about where this season might go in the next few episodes, and it's one that impacts a fair amount of the future Trek universe.
    • 🖖 #StarTrekDiscovery S02E11 Another solid episode. Glad they didn’t drag out the Burnham family reunion drama over multiple episodes, but the scenes with Michael and her mom were really good. Spock continues to evolve nicely. And we have theories about ties to future series….
    • The NRA is a Terrorist Organization As far as I’m concerned, at least (and I’m certainly not the only one). That there are still many people who support this group is positively disgusting.
    • VOTE Everyone: When it's time to vote, GET OUT AND VOTE.
    • A map of the entire internet from May 1973, the month I was born. Originally posted by David Newbury, who found it in old papers acquired from his dad. Kottke points out that those circles and squares “represent individual computers and routers, not universities or cities.”

    • Geek and Other Holidays I've just resurrected an old project, using Wikipedia's list of unofficial observances to create a calendar file (in `.ics` format) suitable for download and direct import or subscription in iCal, Outlook, Google Calendar, or (as far as I know) any other reputable calendar program.

    • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Quite simply, a must-see, and I'll be very surprised if another film bests it this year. That may sound a little odd at not quite three full months into the year, but yes, the movie was that damn good.
    • QuickSilver A piece of Mac freeware worth touting: Quicksilver.

    • On your knees! Gee, it's a good thing that I live in a country that's filled to the brim with nothing but one hundred percent, across the board, no exceptions, God-fearing Christians.

    • Another CBDTPA Wired's reporting that in addition to the CBDTPA bill that's going through the Senate, a representative is planning on introducing a similar bill to the House. Double-plus-ungood.
    • Osama’s been bloggin’ Here's a truly bizarre piece of work -- Osama bin Laden's Blog.
    • Virtual LEGOs! Oh, man -- I could get so lost playing with virtual Legos that I'd forget all about work. That'd be a bad thing.
    • Sex is funny So just why is it that so many 'good Christians' can't ever seem to joke around about sex?
    • She’s not one of my favorites anyway More reasons copy-protected audio CD's are a Bad Thing: Celine Dion may be hazardous to your Mac.
    • Going up…way up I am so stoked about the possibilities that could come of this. According to an article on Space.com, within 12 years we could have space elevators stretching 62,000 miles above the earth, capable of hauling payloads to the top every three days. Too freakin' cool.
    • Ebert on copy protection The way to launch a new CD is to get it talked about -- not to insult potential fans by making it unplayable on their equipment even after they buy it legitimately.
    • Eugenics wars I'm trying to figure out what surprises me more -- that someone in the UK is writing an article that appears to be seriously promoting eugenics in the near future, or that in the resulting MeFi discussion nobody thought to mention the Eugenics Wars.
    • When Elephants Dance Michael Fraase's 'When Elephants Dance' is an excellent summation of the current flap over digital rights and the dangers in the entertainment industries current drive to control everything.

    • Jello Über Alles This week's This American Life had a fascinating look at Michael Guarino, the prosecuting lawyer in the 1986 obscenity trial against Jello Biafra and the Dead Kennedys over their Frankenchrist album and the H. R. Giger print included with it.
    • How many times were you a minor? On a lighter note, while this news story isn't really something to laugh at, it has a wonderful example of bad writing that made me laugh...
    • It’s only domestic violence if you’re married Here's a jaw-dropping, 'holy shit' item: in Ohio, beating someone you live with is only domestic violence if you're married, and the justification used for this is Ohio's constitutional ban on same-sex marriages.
    • Marilyn Monroe Up until last week sometime, I'd never actually seen a Marilyn Monroe film. I knew who she was, of course, and had seen the occasional brief clip from one film or another here and there, but I had yet to actually watch any of her work.

WA Virus Update

An update on WA’s coronavirus status.

As has been noted in a Twitter screenshot I’ve seen a number of people sharing, one of the key metrics to track is not the number of cases, but the number of deaths, and how quickly that number is growing. According to the Twitter post from Dr. Sam Wang of Princeton, “If the ‘doubling time’ of these slows to more than 3 days, we’re starting to bend the curve.”

Screen Shot 2020 03 26 at 2 19 00 PM

According to a graphic from the New York Times, as of this morning, WA’s ‘doubling time’ is nine days.

Screen Shot 2020 03 26 at 2 19 30 PM

This is good news. WA may have been first in the US to get seriously hit, and there have been some hiccups, but overall, we’ve been doing a good job of social distancing and controlling the situation as much as possible.

I’ve even seen other (currently unsourced) comments indicating that the UW medical center is not only not overwhelmed, but aren’t even as whelmed as they expected to be at this point, and are offering assistance to other places.

None of this means we’re out of the woods yet. But they’re all good signs that we’re doing the right things, however frustrating they may be.

Keep it up, everyone!

Got out of the habit of my weekly Star Trek: Picard mini-reviews, thanks to the coronavirus stress, but just watched the final episode of the season, and I’m satisfied. Quibbles here and there, sure, but overall, a very good first season, and I’m looking forward to more. 🖖

    • The truth? We can't handle the truth! Masked Memoji Me

Just a bit of silliness today — I created a mask-wearing version of my social media profile photo to use for the foreseeable future, and I’m actually pretty darn happy with how it came out.

👍 with facemask

I took one of the Memoji caricatures of me from my iPhone, found an image of someone wearing a disposable mask, and then did a little image editing (“photoshopping”, only using Affinity Photo) to extract the mask, overlay it onto the Memoji, and warp it into place.

It’s silly but serious, and was a pleasant distraction for ten minutes or so earlier today.

    • Time for a little blatant self-promotion A few times in the past, I've come up with ideas that amuse me, and I've put a couple of them onto t-shirts (and other gear) through CafePress. Unfortunately, they only got a few days of exposure after they went up, as their announcement posts scrolled off the main page of my site and into my archives.

    • A brit's view of Seattle There's a very interesting article in this week's Seattle Weekly from Jonathan Raban, a british author who's been living in Seattle since 1990. In a letter back to Britain that was originally published in The Guardian, he does a really good job of outlining where Seattle sits politically and economically, especially in contrast to how the U.S. in general is presented to the world. Then, towards the end, he mentions a certain up and coming political candidate that is rapidly gaining notice, and suggests that this might be the man to watch in the upcoming months…
    • More rumblings from Korea We really shouldn't forget that in the midst of bombing Iraq back to the stone age, we've also got a fairly dicey situation over in Korea at the moment. A situation that looks to be getting worse, too, since Korea just cut off contact with the U.N. due to U.S. arrogance.
    • Take Back America I found this article today thanks to Dori Smith. I think it's one of those articles that really should be read by anyone concerned about the political state of our nation today, and since the author has been kind enough to grant reproduction rights, I'm reprinting it here.

Since I’ll hit 20 years of blogging this November, this year I’m posting a daily list of anything I published on this day in the past.

    • 📚 14/2021: The Folded World by Jeff Mariotte ⭐️⭐️ #startrek #tos Mostly a trek through a haunted house, with weird vistas and spooky monsters or villains jumping out. Some odd characterizations that seemed a bit off. Not horrible, but not a standout, either.

    • No More ‘Florida Man’ Jokes From Me While I didn’t know how little support Florida gave its less privileged residents, the common themes in all these stories really are glaringly obvious once pointed out.
  • 2018
    • The latest addition to the game library: Unstable Unicorns, with the Kickstarter exclusive cards and Rainbow Sprinkles, NSFW, and Dragons expansion packs (plus the Apocalypse pack eventually once it’s reprinted, due to some shipping and inventory issues).

    • Outfit choice for the last day of work before #nwc39: Batman shirt, belt, undies, and socks. I’d make a terrible superhero, totally botching the whole “secret identity” thing…but in the role of “eight year old dressing himself”, I’m good. :D (82/366)

    • Finally put together this neat little sheet metal model of the Black Pearl that I got last Christmas.
    • Found a great pair of Chucks while out shopping today. :)

    • When your two year old nephew gives you a hat to wear, you don’t say no. :)
    • Hanging out with my niece Finn.
    • At Prairie’s mom’s place in Vancouver for a family visit weekend.

    • International Talk Like William Shatner Day In honor of William Shatner's 78th birthday today, 3/22/09, I am declaring March 22nd to be 'International Talk Like William Shatner Day!' Now, since talking like our hero is a bit more challenging than walking around going, 'Arrr', I've included the following video tutorial for your edification.

    • Registered (Spring ’06) With the end of winter quarter comes the beginning of spring quarter. As before, Prairie and I figure we can afford to put me through two classes this quarter (I'll be taking summer quarter off, and should have financial aid for next fall).
    • The President Supports Abortions Infuriated by South Dakota's HB 1215, Oglala Sioux Tribe President Fire Thunder has pledged to open a Planned Parenthood clinic on reservation land, where it will be under tribal jurisdiction, rather than that of the Government of South Dakota.

    • Which religion? I know I'm not going to have time to really go as much into this as I'd like while I'm on my lunch break, but I found an interesting little online quiz through Subzero Blue: Which religion is the right one for you? Apparently I test as an agnostic.

    • It’s alive! Alive! I've been quite amused recently at a couple of older posts that have apparently taken on something of a life of their own over the past few months.
  • 2003
    • Chocolate bombs The protesters also threw chocolate eclairs at the consulate, shouting 'Let's bombard the consulate!' In Portuguese, chocolate eclairs are called 'bombas de chocolate,' which translates as 'chocolate bombs.'

    • New e-mail addy redux I've updated the original 'New e-mail addy' post to reflect this, but the e-mail addy I thought was going to work...won't. So, my real new public e-mail address is djwudi@myrealbox.com.
    • Nemesis I'll always have a soft spot for the original, but Paramount has just released the first promotional artwork for Star Trek X: Nemesis -- a redesigned Romulan insignia!
    • Drivers IDs are scary I suppose it's inevitable, but it's still kind of scary when you read just how much can be gleaned about you from your drivers license.
    • I hate your politics! Yeah, well I hate your politics, too! Beautifully written, very funny, and very true.
    • Should gay priests adopt? Okay, now this one's interesting. A column by conservative columnist Ann Coulter, 'Should gay priests adopt?' Is there a point in here somewhere, or is she just trolling (being intentionally inflammatory with little purpose other than riling people up)?
    • New York, New York Some fascinating links courtesy of this MeFi thread to sites and books looking at the New York of the past.
    • Copies are evil Aw, crud. Republican Alaskan senator Ted Stevens has joined the (if you'll excuse me) idiots backing a bill that would ban the sale of all electronic devices without embedded copy-protection chips, according to this WIRED story.
    • Thujone Thujone -- the mystery ingredient that gives absinthe its mystique.
    • Go Hoosiers! I'm not much of a sports fan, but after having two parents who went to IU, it does catch my eye when the Hoosiers beat Duke by one point, and move into the final eight.
    • Nixon was no stoner Apparently the biggest reason marijuana is illegal in the US today is because Nixon wanted it to be.
    • Google vs. Scientology 2 Google has replaced the links it removed yesterday after a fight with the Scientology organization. This still shouldn't have happened in the first place.
