    • Exploring Hitchcock So far, the Hitchcock biography is fascinating, and I'm only about a third of the way through. I did, however, realize that while I've certainly enjoyed what I've seen of Hitchcock's films, I've actually seen very few: Vertigo, Psycho, and The Birds are the only ones!
    • This is boring? I, along with many (most?) people, have a tendency to lament about how boring my life is. After all, my general day-to-day routine is usually just that: routine. I get up, dink around on the 'net, go to work, come home, dink around on the 'net, and go to bed.
    • Sosumi On the bright side, webloggers now have protection against libel suits. On the downside, though, the case that prompted this decision is truly bizarre, and I have to feel sorry for the woman whose case was just overturned by the ruling.

Difficult Listening Hour 2020.03.28

Week seven of my unplanned, unrehearsed, seat-of-the-pants goofing around. As a way of getting back into practice and doing something regularly, I’ve started doing regular Twitch broadcasts, now on Saturday mid-mornings. These are the results. Anything goes.

📚 seventeen of 2020: The Andromeda Strain, by Michael Crichton ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A fun, quick read; amusingly thematically appropriate for the moment. Only this has the advantage of being fictional with a satisfactory resolution. If only COVID-19 could be dealt with in five days.

📚 sixteen of 2020: This Immortal by Roger Zelazny ⭐️⭐️ 1966 Hugo Best Novel

Meh. Maybe it’s a combination of mid-60s SF and the current pandemic stress, and I might have been more receptive at another time, but this was a slog.

    • Another ST:DIS Theory After watching tonight’s episode of Discovery (S02E11), Prairie and I came up with what we think is a very possible theory about where this season might go in the next few episodes, and it's one that impacts a fair amount of the future Trek universe.
    • 🖖 #StarTrekDiscovery S02E11 Another solid episode. Glad they didn’t drag out the Burnham family reunion drama over multiple episodes, but the scenes with Michael and her mom were really good. Spock continues to evolve nicely. And we have theories about ties to future series….

    • Ebert on copy protection The way to launch a new CD is to get it talked about -- not to insult potential fans by making it unplayable on their equipment even after they buy it legitimately.
    • Eugenics wars I'm trying to figure out what surprises me more -- that someone in the UK is writing an article that appears to be seriously promoting eugenics in the near future, or that in the resulting MeFi discussion nobody thought to mention the Eugenics Wars.

WA Virus Update

An update on WA’s coronavirus status.

As has been noted in a Twitter screenshot I’ve seen a number of people sharing, one of the key metrics to track is not the number of cases, but the number of deaths, and how quickly that number is growing. According to the Twitter post from Dr. Sam Wang of Princeton, “If the ‘doubling time’ of these slows to more than 3 days, we’re starting to bend the curve.”

Screen Shot 2020 03 26 at 2 19 00 PM

According to a graphic from the New York Times, as of this morning, WA’s ‘doubling time’ is nine days.

Screen Shot 2020 03 26 at 2 19 30 PM

This is good news. WA may have been first in the US to get seriously hit, and there have been some hiccups, but overall, we’ve been doing a good job of social distancing and controlling the situation as much as possible.

I’ve even seen other (currently unsourced) comments indicating that the UW medical center is not only not overwhelmed, but aren’t even as whelmed as they expected to be at this point, and are offering assistance to other places.

None of this means we’re out of the woods yet. But they’re all good signs that we’re doing the right things, however frustrating they may be.

Keep it up, everyone!
