    • 📚 five of 2020: Return of the Jedi, by James Kahn ⭐️⭐️⭐️ A much better adaptation than Empire was. Most interesting moment: Wicket’s long speech convincing the Ewok leaders to assist the Rebels in their attack on the bunker. Those teddy bears are pretty eloquent!

    • An Open Letter: I’m a Liberal An open letter to those who don't know me yet, or have just met me recently enough that my not-at-all-closeted political leanings have not yet become blindingly obvious: I'm a liberal, and a pretty far left-leaning liberal that that.

    • Had to go back to the store anyway, so we tried again, and went 7/7, no dupes, and got Harley… so we’re calling this set of #Lego #batman minifigs done enough for us.
    • Made our first run at #Lego #Batman minifig blind bags, and scored 8/10 (2 duplicates). Still hoping to find Harley, but don’t want too many more doubles, so we’ll see how it goes.

    • 5pm on Friday before a 3-day weekend. Doc Ock and Spider-Man say it’s time to go home. Sounds good to me! (15/366)
    • This…phone…was found in my building with this note and turned in to me. I think someone is confused. #notaphone
  • 2015
    • It started snowing, so I took a short break for a quick walk outside. :)
  • 2014
    • The day is done! And that bright spot on the horizon isn’t a streetlight, but a big gorgeous winter moon. Nice evening!
  • 2009
    • Star Wars…? This has been everywhere across the 'net for the past day, so you've probably seen it...however, if you haven't, now's your chance. The Star Wars trilogy, as told by someone who hasn't _actually_ seen the movies.

    • A little shakey Either we just had a small earthquake, or they're making NyQuil a lot stronger than they used to.
    • Let’s kill him At the MoveOn.org awards presentation [for Bush in 30 Seconds], Al Franken made the sign-language interpreter crack up by saying solemnly, 'I heard Al Franken make fun of deaf people backstage. Let's kill him.'
    • Carol Moseley Braun…sci-fi geek! The mundane buzz today about Carol Moseley Braun will be her dropping her own presidential campaign and supporting Dean. But the real news happened last night on her appearance on The Daily Show. Turns out that Carol's a total science fiction geek.
    • Dean’s honesty You don't allocate civil rights by who makes you comfortable and who doesn't. I believe that civil unions was a masterful way of making sure that every gay and lesbian Vermonter was entitled to the same rights as everybody else -- without getting into the business about telling churches who they could marry and who they couldn't marry. I think what we did was the right thing.

    • More on Eldred vs. Ashcroft Lots of good links to excellent commentary on the Eldred vs. Ashcroft decision on Copyfight: The politics of IP.
    • R.I.P. Public Domain Copyright was originally intended to give an author/creator a specific, finite amount of time to reap profits and rewards from a created work before it was released into the public domain. Originally set to 14 years, the active term has been extended bit by bit over the years. The primary mover behind the extension of copyright terms in recent years, including this most recent extention, has been Disney. Every time Mickey Mouse was in danger of entering the public domain, Disney challenged the copyright laws, and got the terms extended, allowing them to retain control over Mickey.

    • Antitrust (Hackers 2000) I went out to see Hackers 2000...er...sorry, make that Antitrust tonight. Not a bad little flick...nothing that's really going to tax your brain, but an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours.

    • Ruminations on Star Wars It's funny, I just watched the whole trilogy last night for the first time in ages. People complained about EP1 being too cartoony and kid friendly. Have you ever watched these movies? Except for Empire, they're as kid-friendly as anything Nickelodeon puts out. Jar-Jar would have fit right in.
    • Quotebook updates I believe Royce may end up with more links to his site from mine alone than from the rest of the 'net in totality. Never let it be said I never do a friend a favor -- no matter how completely goofball it may be.

    • 📚 four of 2020: The Empire Strikes Back, by Donald F. Glut ⭐️⭐️ A clumsy and unimaginative adaptation. Most interesting for the handwritten notes contributed by a former owner of this copy, correcting all the Han/Leia romance to be screen-accurate.

    • Electronic Grassroots Much has been made over the past few months of how political campaigns are more and more turning to electronic means of communication and organization to connect and interact with voters, usually pointing to the Howard Dean campaign as the leader and trendsetter for this new approach to politicking. But how did Dean's online juggernaut get kicked into high gear?
    • Changing my habits So, starting tonight, I'm going to try to vary my reading habits a bit to see what that does. I've deleted all the groups I was using before, and instead have all the feeds listed in more-or-less alphabetical order, top to bottom in a single group, ordered by date posted.
    • Army War College blasts ‘War on Terror’ A scathing new report published by the Army War College broadly criticizes the Bush administration's handling of the war on terrorism, accusing it of taking a detour into an 'unnecessary' war in Iraq and pursuing an 'unrealistic' quest against terrorism that may lead to U.S. wars with states that pose no serious threat.

Domain Switch

In a project that didn’t take nearly as long as I thought it would, I’ve just moved my personal site from its former home of www.michaelhanscom.com to its new home here at michaelhans.com.

The reason for the move is simple: The “…com.com” repetition at the end of the old URL formed by the end of my last name and the .com top-level domain suffix has always bugged me a little bit, and so the new URL is simpler and more clever.

It has been pointed out to me that this new setup is likely somewhat less optimal in terms of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), as “the SEO power of [thing].com is probably less than that of [first-part-of-thing].[second-part-of-thing]”. However, 1) I’ve had my time at the top of the search results, and I’m okay with continuing to drop down in the rankings a bit, and 2) I’ve stopped running ads or paying any real attention to my statistics/site visits/rankings, so SEO just isn’t at the top of my concerns right now. I’m not going to ignore that entirely, but it’s simply not a major concern.

At this point, the move should be complete: All content has been transferred over to the new domain (and I’d like to take a moment to plug the WordPress plugin Duplicator, which made moving my blog much easier than I thought it would be; it wrapped everything up in an archive, I moved the archive to the new location, ran the installer, and that was it–it even scanned the database to replace any links to www.michaelhanscom.com inside blog posts with links to michaelhans.com, which was one of the tasks I was dreading), the .htaccess redirects are in place and working properly, and I’ve adjusted all external connections so that they all point to the right place.

All in all, a rather surprisingly uneventful move.
