    • Another one bites the dust Yet another in the ongoing saga of webloggers canned for really stupid reasons. This time, it's Troutgirl, who until recently worked for Friendster. Ontario Empoblog has a good rundown of the situation. ➡
    • What a deal! Y'know, it's really a shame I don't go to Florida State University. Turns out that they're working on setting up a special deal with Apple that would provide free iTunes software to students and allow them to download music for 99 cents per song. ➡
    • Two digits, thousands of votes Issue: Manipulation technique found in the Diebold central tabulator -- 1,000 of these systems are in place, and they count up to two million votes at a time. By entering a 2-digit code in a hidden location, a second set of votes is created. This set of votes can be changed, so that it no longer matches the correct votes. The voting system will then read the totals from the bogus vote set. ➡

    • I’m everywhere! With the addition of the new Mac OS X release of Skype, there are now a veritable plethora of ways to get ahold of me online, should anyone be so inclined. ➡
    • G5 iMac The new G5-based iMac is up on Apple's site. Haven't spent a ton of time on the site, yet, but first impressions are that it's a damn impressive piece of engineering, packing all that into such a tiny little space. ➡

Much better than the last one. While the environmental themes are pretty heavy-handed, it’s nice to find a Trek novel where everything isn’t wrapped up neatly with a bow by the end.

    • New glasses are on the way So I've got new eyeglasses on the way. Rimless, fairly small and rectangular, with very thin silver bows, and they come with a set of clip-on shades that match the shape of the lenses exactly. Prairie assures me that they look incredibly good and nearly disappear from my face, not nearly as dominating as my current pair. ➡
    • Rent As mentioned briefly last week, Saturday's evening entertainment was wandering down a couple blocks to the Paramount Theatre to see Rent. ➡

    • Feelin' hot! Hot! Hot! 'I see,' I said, and studied her for a moment. 'We'll just have to leave that to mystery then, won't we?' ➡
    • Bumbershoot tips Kellan asked if I had any tips for the rest of the Bumbershoot weekend. My response kept getting longer and longer, so I figured I might as well toss it up as a post of its own, rather than hiding it in the comment thread. ➡

    • No, really, it’s innocent! When my 12 year old daughter asked for this for her birthday, I kind of wondered if she was too old for it, but she seems to LOVE it. Her friends love it too! They play for hours in her bedroom with this great toy. They really seem to like the special effects it offers (the sound effects and vibrating). My oldest daughter (17) really likes it too! I reccomend this for all children. ➡
    • Smileys are back! I had this hack installed a while ago, and had managed to kill it -- well, it's back! Now, when I or anyone posting a comment types in a 'smiley' code (for instance, ':)') it will be replaced by the corresponding 'smiley' (in this case, ':)'). ➡
    • Suddenly cab drivers seem sane As the city bus drove down the street, two men in the back got into a fight. Concerned for the safety of himself and his other passengers, the driver pulled over to the side of the road and had everyone -- including the two men in the altercation -- evacuate the bus. Everyone did, save one person. ➡
  • 2001
    • Suicide isn’t painless This event has been garnering national media attention not because of the suicide attempt itself, but because of the depressingly horrendous way that people here reacted to it. ➡
    • Kev, drama queens, and Bumbershoot First things first -- my bro was in town! On his way north he stopped off in Seattle for a couple days, and we got to hang out and visit Saturday and Sunday evenings. ➡

Can’t decide if it wants to be comedic or serious, and has wildly out-of-character (or ridiculously exaggerated) moments for nearly every main character. Amusing moments, but not a good Trek novel.

    • WudiVisions One upside of having to redo everything from the ground up is that it's allowing me to play with some ideas that I'd had floating around in my head for a while, and just hadn't tried yet -- and other ideas that have just appeared during this project. ➡

    • Untrusted content, nofollow, etc. Phil Ringnalda pointed to an idea that Ian Hickson just tossed out while brainstorming ways to battle the ever-increasing issue of comment spam. Personally, I'd love to be able to wrap the comments section of my individual entry pages in something like this — and actually, it reminds me a lot of a technique I used to use when I had my website running on my own webserver. ➡
    • A good UI is a good thing Terrence has a review of his Nomad Zen Xtra mp3 player posted, and while it's essentially a positive review, one line stood out to me. After having had the unit for six months and using it on what sounds like a near-daily basis, he mentions that he has 'basically mastered the controls.' ➡
