    • Book thirty-nine of 2019: A Canticle for Liebowitz, by Walter M. Miller, Jr._ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1961 Hugo Best Novel Not terribly optimistic in its outlook towards humanity’s ability to learn from our mistakes, but an excellent and far-reaching post-apocalyptic tale.
  • 2018
    • Book thirty of 2018: The Collapsing Empire, by John Scalzi. 🌟🌟🌟🌟
  • 2016
    • A full and fun weekend of gothclubbing at the Merc, Star Trekking at the Cinerama, being a dinosaur at the @norwescon picnic, hoteling, and shopping. Now back home in the ‘Burg and feeling a little zonkered. (206/366)

  • 2015
    • Footwear for the day: Superman Chucks.
  • 2014
    • For #throwbackthursday: T-ball as a kid. It quickly became clear that sports weren’t my thing; I invariably spent my time examining weeds in right field, as that was where I’d do the least damage during games.
  • 2008
    • Speakeasy can Kiss Off At this point, I can _strongly_ recommend against using Speakeasy for personal broadband service. Perhaps they're still doing well at the business level, but from a customer point of view, they're really not worth it.
  • 2006
    • Cannonball A seven-shot action photo of a swimmer doing a cannonball into Greenlake here in Seattle.
  • 2005
    • Bite of Seattle 2005 A small photoset of shots from wandering around Saturday at the Bite of Seattle. Not my usual onslaught of pics this time...I just wasn't as into it on Saturday as I am sometimes. Still managed a few decent shots, though.
  • 2003
    • BuyTunes blows Earlier this week BuyTunes popped up attempting to capitalize on the success of the iTunes Music Store by moving the same general idea to the Windows platform. So far, the word is that they suck.
    • Bumper stickers! Bush needs to order new bumperstickers, but needs help with the slogan. Can anyone help?
    • 9/11 report online The full congressional inquiry into the events surrounding Sept. 11th, 2001 (well, minus the sections pulled by the White House) is available online.
    • The 'I don't vote' party Mike Walsh's plans to register to vote for the first time in 54 years got me wondering how many other people might finally be moved to register during this election cycle.
    • I never knew she was so icky While I've heard a lot about über-conservative Ann Coulter, I'd never bothered to read anything she wrote. From everything I'd read about her, I didn't figure it was worth the time. Now I know I was right, and have no need nor desire to ever read anything from her again.
    • Enterprise designer dies Walter 'Matt' Jefferies, the designer of the original Enterprise NCC-1701, has died.
    • About 'Noises' I'm tossing albums up there at more or less random intervals (often determined by what I'm listening to at any given point in the day). When I do, though, I'm highlighting three key tracks from the album and adding streaming audio 'PLAY' links to them, in addition to one for the full album.
    • Leadership A leader is best when people barely know he exists; …when his work is done, his aim fulfilled; they will say, 'We did it ourselves.'
    • I wanna push da button! Rock on — there's a couple workmen poking around at the elevator right now.
    • Darwin Awards Man, some people scare me with their stupidity.
  • 2002
    • Church vs. State Personally, I find it easier to believe in God than to believe that George W. Bush has the best interests of anyone other than himself in mind.
    • As long as it’s depressing One of Depeche Mode's greatest strengths is also their greatest weakness. The band comes up with some of pop music's most inventive lyrics, and at the same time, they always give the impression that they'll arbitrarily sing about anything, as long as it's depressing.
    • I was on TV – in Alaska! It seems that Fox 4's nightly news was doing a story on teen dance clubs, and used some old footage from Gig's. We're guessing it was from the closing night's TchKung! show, as apparently I had mud smeared across my face -- something TchKung! is known for.
  • 2001
    • Is this going to work? I'm starting to get really worried as to whether this whole thing is going to work out for me. It seems I may have made a bit of a mistake in moving my departure date up to when I did -- I arrived in Seattle at a time when the job market is pretty nasty, and I'm getting really tired of being unemployed.

    • Well…this was an interesting experiment. It’s been years since I tried going clean shaven, so I gave it a shot. • Thoughts on Inception As good as it is, I don't find _Inception_ to be a perfect film. Some of the things that bothered Prairie bothered me as well as I was watching it. Interestingly, some of these very things end up making more sense -- or, at the very least, become less troubling -- when viewed in the light of one of the more interesting interpretations of the film.

    • My MovableType/TypePad History The point to all this? No point at all, really. Just kind of cool knowing that I've been doing my small part to help the Trotts take over the world almost since the beginning. Not quite from the very beginning, but pretty durn close.
    • Manchester U vs. Celtic Tonight's the Man-U vs. Celtic game here in Seattle. One of the few times I wish I could go to see a major sporting event.
    • Is this right? Somehow, I find it hard to believe that Qusay and Uday would have been in a villa with nothing but a teenage boy and a single bodyguard for company. Wouldn't they have been far better protected than that? If it was just the four of them, how could three men and a boy hold off two hundred plus American soldiers for six hours?
    • Democracy in Action I'm not diving into it full-bore right now (gotta get ready to go to work), but the GWU Democracy in Action site looks to have a ton of good information on all aspects of the upcoming election cycle. Definitely worth browsing through.
    • Ah, the memories… I miss the days when computers weren't as powerful as they are now. Not because I'd like to go back to the days of 286's and Motorola 68000 processors (ick), but because the limited resources forced programmers to weigh features against bloat, to code for small sizes as well as functionality, and so on.

    • Keeping Our Fingers Crossed Word from R as of about 4pm today is that Xebeth is 'okay' -- out of surgery and in the ICU. From the sound of it, while she's not out of the woods, she's not in immediate danger at the moment.
    • Malignant Hyperthermia I haven't mentioned this before -- and debated even putting this post up -- but Xebeth, who I recently reconnected with and has become an extremely dear friend to both Prairie and I, has been battling malignant hyperthermia for some time now.

    • Geeking about Dean I really wonder if there are people on the Howard Dean campaign who are tied in enough to the 'geek' side of the blogosphere to realize how big of a deal it could be that Dean is getting mentioned prominently by Doc Searls, Robert Scoble, and Tom Negrino.
    • TrackBack spam? Grrrr… Well, here's a first (for me, at least) — I just got TrackBack spam.
    • A few new Canadians I've known quite a few people who have at one time or another, with various degrees of seriousness, talked about moving to Canada as they got more and more disgusted with how things were going in the US. Now, enough people have decided that this sounds like a good idea that it's actually making news.
    • North Korea The whole North Korea nuclear thing is freaking me out, precisely because we seem to be doing nothing at all about it. Not good.
    • In general… …what's the point?
    • TPBETA 1505 My own little concept for marking my spot as a TypePad beta tester. A small badge, with 'TPBETA' on the left, and '1505' on the right. 1505 is the ID number for my TP blog -- obviously, the older the blog, the lower the ID number will be.
    • Is the day over yet? Today is just dragging on, and on…and on.
    • Sixteen Legs ;) The first pic (that I've heard of, at least) of the villain in next summer's Spider Man sequel — Doctor Octopus — hit the 'net yesterday.

    • ‘Black Lives Matter’ vs. ‘All Lives Matter’ TL;DR: The phrase 'Black lives matter' carries an implicit 'too' at the end; it's saying that black lives should also matter. Saying 'all lives matter' is dismissing the very problems that the phrase is trying to draw attention to.

    • There’s no such thing as too much music My one major accomplishment of the weekend was finally completing a project that I've had going on for months now: importing every CD I own into iTunes. Quite a task, when after years of being a complete music junkie (compounded by a few years of DJing), I've built up a CD collection of 1,142 albums!

However...that just doesn't seem to be the case.

    • Eclinkticism returns Assuming I've managed to figure out the right combination of shell scripts, SSI includes, CRON jobs, and other associated voodoo, the Eclinkticism linklog in the sidebar should be up and running again. As before, it's just a dump of the most recent items I've added to my del.icio.us account, so feel free to add that RSS feed to your reader if you like.
    • Bag’n’Pipe Hoppers One of the local street performers I enjoy running into is the Bag'n'Pipe Hoppers. Actually two performers who team up together from time to time -- Don P. Scobie on bagpipes and Jesse Bishop (or Bishnutz) on drums -- their combination of traditional Scottish piping and modern hip-hop beats is always fun to stumble across.
    • Acid bath ...somewhere, in the back of my brain, I'd decided that it wasn't really water, but streams of acid running down the street that would eat through the bottom of my shoes and into my feet if I accidentally stepped into one.

    • The New York Times posts a Mea Culpa It's always nice to see one of the 'big boys' admit that maybe, just maybe, they could have dug a little deeper into the goings-on in the months before we invaded Iraq.
    • Pictures of Noah Kevin just sent me pictures of Noah! At this point, I'm required to do the 'proud uncle' thing and display them to the world. You, of course, are required to expound upon how beautiful and perfect he is, even though at this stage, all children pretty much look like Winston Churchill. ;)

    • Alaska Jack Concurrently with today's announcement that Alaska Airlines has contracted with Jack Nicholson to act as spokesperson for the airline in all of their television and print advertising in 2004, the airline also revealed an upgrade to the traditional and distinctive Alaska Native image on the tail of their jets.
    • Hoaxing Bambi The jury's still out on this one, but I'd be willing to bet that the Hunting for Bambi 'business' (in which men dress up in camo, grab paintball guns, and go running through the woods 'hunting' naked women) is nothing more than an elaborate spoof.
    • 9-11 Quiz How much do you remember about the events surrounding Sept. 11th, 2001?
    • Need help? Got a question? Can't find an answer? Take a quick peek at Help!Blog, maybe someone can help you out.
    • Straight out of a movie The British scientist named as the possible source for some of the disputed Iraq intelligence has been found dead in the woods.

    • The job hunt commences Not a whole lot going on at the moment, beyond getting into job searching. Yesterday I e-mailed my resume to a hiring rep for Kinko's, and turned in an application and resume to Suncoast. Aside from that, things have been pretty slow.

    • “The axis today is not liberal and conservative, the axis is constructive-destructive, and you’ve cast your lot with the destructive people. Fox has become an incredibly destructive force in our society.” — Steve Jobs to Rupert Murdoch, in 2010.

    • Picked up some really dark (and oh-so-stylish) sunglasses for Prairie and me for the eclipse next month. Got a slide-on lens filter for my camera, too. With a little luck (and clear skies), we’ll be able to see the eclipse!

    • Book thirty-three of 2016: The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making, by Catherynne M. Valente. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 (199/366)

    • Going old-school for today’s #throwbackthursday shot. This is what happens when you’re born in the early 1970s (thanks, parents)! ;) But then, that shirt could be a passable TOS Starfleet command uniform shirt…though I don’t think the pants would fit the dress code.

    • We Have Power Apparently there are two breakers on the troublesome circuit, _one_ of which had popped -- which meant that for half of our apartment, outlets that should have been getting 110v were only getting around 80v.

    • My Depeche Mode collection For Rebecca, for comparison purposes, and for Jonas, because he made fun of me for dancing to Strangelove at the Vogue a few months ago. ;)
    • Okay, okay, I’m awake, I get it I do remember having a long, very involved dream revolving around discovering that Lloyd Alexander had written a series of companion novels to his Prydain Chronicles: two collections of short stories, and a full trilogy of three almost Harry Potter-length novels set about sixteen years or so after the end of the Prydain Chronicles.

    • The skyline is back One minor change to the site design here — I moved my shot of the Seattle skyline that I use over at The Long Letter to this weblog also.
    • Squirrel Monkeys Let's see what the government might have chosen in its effort to protect American lives from ruthless, technologically sophisticated terrorists.
    • Most literate cities Here's something cool: The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has posted a study of the most literate cities in America. Seattle got number two!
    • Two more Two stories: first up, one about what Prairie deemed the 'Passing Judgement on Poor Women With Bastard Children Act'. Secondly, more of Bush's prior supporters are realizing that, to quote some old famous dead guy, 'something smells rotten in Denmark…'.
    • It's been addressed. Ari Fleischer's replacement, Scott McClellan, must be hating his life right about now.
    • Google's presidential endorsement Go to Google. Put 'who will be president in 2004?' into the search field (no quotes). Hit the 'I'm feeling lucky' button.
    • Thoughtcrime 'In this post-911 era, it is the absolute responsibility of the FBI to follow through on any tips of potential terrorist activity,' Paris says. 'Are people going to take exception and be inconvenienced by this at times? Oh, yeah. ... A certain amount of convenience is going to be offset by an increase in security.'
    • Pashazade / Effendi / Felaheen Something else for my reading list, courtesy of Thousand Faced Moon, who I found by wandering through TypePad's list of recently updated TypePad blogs.
    • Metallica smokes too much crack We're not saying we own those two chords, individually -- that would be ridiculous. We're just saying that in that specific order, people have grown to associate E, F with our music.
    • Why did the chicken cross the road? Douglas Adams: Forty-two.
    • Keith Richards + Pepe Le Pew = Jack Sparrow? But he says the main inspiration for this character was Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards with a bit of everybody's favourite cartoon skunk, Pepe Le Pew, thrown in for good measure.
    • The Passion But then, don't all films about Christ cause controversy — especially before they're released, when nobody can actually make an informed decision about any aspect of the film? Ugh. But anyway.
    • Morally deficient Threat rating: Medium. Your total lack of decent family values makes you dangerous, but we can count on some right wing nutter blowing you up if you become too high profile.
